1 Introduction

WiththeupcomingCbandspectrumauctionsplannedbyFCC,thereislotofinterestintheindustrytostudythespectrumforeffectiveutilization.SuccesswithCbandspectrumutilizationfor5GiscriticalforUSleadershipinthecritical5Gcommunicationsegment.

CbandspectrumauctionisexpectedtobemadeavailableintwophasesfortheCellularServiceProviders(CSPs)asshowninthefigurebelow:

Thechallengewithphase1isthatFSSproviderswouldstillbeoperatingbetween3820MHz–4000MHzanditisimportanttoprotecttheFSSoperationfrominterferencefromCSPs

EricssonhassetupatestingandverificationfacilityinthePlano,TexascampusprimarilyfocusingonthePhase1coexistenceofCSPandFSSoperation.

Inadditiontotheinterferencemitigationsolutiontestingandverification,itisalsocriticalforCSPstobeabletoefficientlyusethevaluablespectrumandprovideexcellent5Gservicestoconsumerandenterprise.Ericsson,Plano–TXsetupisalsobeingusedforverificationofinnovativefeaturesandfunctionalitiesthatwouldprovidehighcapacityandperformancefortheendusersofCSPs.

2.2 AdvancedMassiveMIMOfunctionalitytesting

The2ndCbandradioinstalledinPlanocampusisusedfortesting,developmentanddemonstrationofadvancedmassiveMIMOfunctionalityforCband.SomeoftheadvancedfunctionalitiesalreadytestedanddemonstratedasSRSbasedMulti-UserMIMO(MU-MIMO).Thisfeatureallowsextremesystemcapacityandveryefficientutilizationofpreciousmid-bandTDDspectrum.Weareabletoreachthespectralefficiencyofnearly54bits/Hz.

3 Accomplishmentsandplanahead

EricssonhasalreadymadesignificantprogresstowardscharacterizingaCbandnetworkanditscoexistencechallengeswithCbandsatelliteoperation.TheresultsandlearningfromthemeasurementsdoneinPlanoisbeingusedfornetworksimulationandplanningactivities.Thelearningsarealsobeingfedbacktothedevelopmentunitforfurtherimprovementandoptimizationofthesolution.

Ericssonplanstousethesetupin2021tocontinuetestingnewandinnovativefeaturesforCbandsatelliteinterferencemitigationsolutionswhichwouldbeessentialforthesuccessof5GinUS.

Inadditiontotheabove-mentionedinterferencetesting,thetestspectrumwouldalsobeusedfordevelopmentandtestingofnewusecasesin5G,suchaslowlatencyusecases.
