ABC has set premiere dates for John Ridley’s “American Crime (http://variety.com/t/american-crime/)”

and Ryan Phillippe starrer “Secrets and Lies (http://variety.com/t/secrets-and-lies/)” — a pair of

limited-run, crime-themed dramas that will receive strong drama lead-ins and be a big part of the net’s

post-Oscars push.

The 10-episode “Secrets and Lies” will take over the current “Resurrection” timeslot of Sunday at 9 p.m.

starting March 1, the week after the Academy Awards air on the network. It will benefit from a potent

“Once Upon a Time” lead-in, as the fairytale drama returns from its winter hiatus on that night with a

string of original episodes.

“Secrets,” in which a man goes from Good Samaritan to murder suspect when he discovers the body of

his neighbor’s young son, will bow with a two-hour installment, and future episodes will air from 9 to 10

p.m., leading into “Revenge.”

“American Crime” will bow Thursday, March 5 in the timeslot currently occupied by rookie hit “How to

Get Away With Murder,” which has its two-hour season finale one week earlier (Feb. 26). The Alphabet

will be giving the drama its best possible drama lead-in, “Scandal.”

In the 11-episode “American Crime,” a young couple in Modesto, California were brutally attacked in

their home leaving Matt Skokie, a war vet, murdered, and his wife, Gwen, unconscious, barely hanging

on. The crime sends shock waves throughout the community stirring up tensions across socioeconomic

and racial lines in this gritty new drama – from the points of view of all those involved.

McDougall (“Resurrection”), who also directed the pilot. Executive producers of “Secrets and Lies”

include Kligman for Avenue K Productions, Kaplan for Kapital Entertainment, Robertson and Mayfield for

Hoodlum Entertainment and Timothy Busfield. “Secrets and Lies” is a production of ABC Studios.

Hoodlum Entertainment is developing a second series of murder mystery Secrets & Lies.

Hoodlum's Tracey Robertson told IF that she and Stephen M. Irwin, who created thedrama, are working on ideas for a second season.

Network Ten is yet to greenlight another series. The big reveal in the final episode aired onMonday nigtht attracted 413,000 viewers in the five capital cities, a big jump over lastweek’s 315,000, and 556,000 nationally.

The OzTam ratings show the March 31 episode had an aggregate audience of 392,000 inthe metros (24.5% bigger than the overnight figure) and 539,000 nationally, and 114,000watched the repeat. Ten said there were a further 200,000 views on catch-up servicetenplay in the past seven days.

The Nine Network's Love Child ended on a winning note on Monday night, drawing 1.277million viewers in the metros and 1.78 million nationally.

With Ben still struggling to clear to his name, he discoversa strange man squatting in a vacant house close to wherehe found Thom. He also discovers a blood-stained blue jacket in the house's laundry. The police arrive and takethe man away. But when Ben goes to show Cornielle the jacket, it is gone.

Back at home, Ben is shocked when Christy says she is leaving him. She reveals she saw him throw somethingin the river and gives him one last chance to tell her the truth, but Ben is torn. He cannot bring himself to revealthe truth to his wife. And with that, Christy walks out the door, taking the girls with her.

In the shadows of his family leaving, a distraught Ben is tempted by the comfort Jess offers. They fall into bedtogether, but inside Jess' bedroom, he finds a new clue that leaves him shocked to the core.

Crownies's Indiana Evans to join Secrets & Lies.

Australian actress Indiana Evans is joining Hollywood stars Ryan Phillippe and Juliette Lewis in the American remake of the Channel Ten dramaseries Secrets & Lies.

Evans is best known to Australian audiences for roles in Home and Away and the teen series H20: Just Add Water.

Since relocating to the US she has also starred in the 2012 remake of the classic The Blue Lagoon, with another Australian, actor Brenton Thwaites.

The original version of Secrets & Lies was produced by Brisbane-based production company Hoodlum for the Ten Network. It stars Martin Hendersonand airs in Australia in March.

In the US version, Phillippe will play Henderson's character Ben Gundelach, a man who discoversthe body of a young boy and becomes a suspect in the subsequent murder investigation.

Cape Fear and August: Osage County star Juliette Lewis will play the lead investigator, AndreaCornell.

Evans will play Natalie, the daughter of Ben and Christy (KaDee Strickland).

Secrets & Lies is one of two projects Hoodlum has sold into the US market; the other is the ABC2comedy The Strange Calls.

The US adaptation of Secrets & Lies is being co-produced by Hoodlum, with the show's Australianproducers Tracey Robertson and Nathan Mayfield serving as co-executive producers.

Robertson and Mayfield have suggested that the two series, though identical, could have differentendings.

The US series is currently being filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina.

'Secrets & Lies' Review: The LatestSuburban Whodunit Will StunYou

For the longest time, a 20-plus episode season was the norm, at least in NorthAmerica. But the British and Australian models have always geared towards shorterseasons and thank goodness that trend is spreading. It makes sense financially,affords actors other opportunities and gives impatient viewers something they don'thave to invest a lot of time in -- a win-win (-win). Because who wouldn't rather havesix or 10 or even 13 great, gripping episodes than 22 meh ones?

"Secrets & Lies" is one of those series (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/05/30/cbc-fall-tv-2014-15-lineup-schedule_n_5419399.html). The six-episode crimethriller from Australia has already been likened to "Broadchurch" in that it is yetanother suburban murder mystery centring on a young boy. However, unlike"Broadchurch," the townsfolk aren't all suspects (at least, not yet); rather, BenGundelach (Martin Henderson), a typical Aussie bloke who found the body of hisfour-year-old neighbour Thom (Hunter Stratton Boland), quickly becomes the maneveryone assumes did it.

Henderson is so convincing as a man wrongly accused -- which makes me wonder ifmaybe he actually did do it. We don't know much about Ben, just that he is a husband,a father, a painter and seems like a generally good guy. That all changes once we delvedeeper and learn that his marriage is on the rocks and he and wife Christy (DianaGlenn) are on the verge of a divorce. And because of how public the murderaccusations have been, his job and any future gigs are in jeopardy. His relationshipwith his daughters, Tasha (Philippa Coulthard) and Eva (Piper Morrissey), seems OK,so it's not all bad.

What is sad is watching Ben become this pariah, a man whom everyone does adouble-take upon seeing and is automatically assumed to be some sick child killer. Somuch for innocent until proven guilty. What's even more sad is watching Ben slowlyrealize that people around him believe he actually did it and is capable of murder,something that's baffling to him. Or is that just how convincing Henderson is in therole?

This isn't the first time Henderson has played a scandal-plagued father and husbandtrying to do right by his family. He played a similar role last year in "The Red Road,"

FOLLOW HUFFPOSTand Henderson was equally wonderful there as he is in "Secrets & Lies."

This is a psychological thriller, so Ben may have easily done the crime he's beingaccused of. As his world crumbles around him, perhaps we'll continue to see this stoicman trying to keep his shit together. Or maybe, just maybe, we see his true side, anangry, scary, murderous side? His wife already has one foot out the door, now shewants the kids, and all he has left is his sanity and reputation -- both of which arehanging by a thread. That's something that could break anyone.

As with any murder mystery series, it can't be a random character who comes out ofnowhere. Viewers need to be introduced to the killer very early on, so presumably,after watching the premiere, we have met him/her. We are supposed to rule out Benbut that doesn't leave many suspects so I'm torn. Which is exactly what the writers arehoping for.

By the end of the first episode, I really don't think Ben did it, nor is he capable of it.My initial suspects include his cold wife, who seems to want her husband out of herlife for good, so why not frame him for murder? What about Ben's best mate, Dave(Damon Gameau), who currently lives in the Gundelachs' pool house while he tries toget back on his feet? Perhaps it's one of the other neighbours on the street, who nowwant nothing to do with Ben? Or what about little Thom's mom, Jess (AdriennePickering)? In real life, the boy's parents would likely be the number-one suspects.She does seem innocent, but where's Dad? Hmm. With so few viable suspects, weseasoned couch detectives will likely have this mystery solved before the end ofepisode six. For those who want to go one step further, you can go to CBC's "Secrets &Lies" site and check out webisodes (http://www.cbc.ca/programguide/program/secrets_lies_hd_), from the perspective of Det. Ian Cornielle (Anthony Hayes), thatprovide insight to the characters and new clues.

Like "Broadchurch," "Secrets & Lies" is gripping and captivating and well worthchecking out. It's also so much more satisfying than the opening shots (of bugs andmuddy worms) may have you think, but I get that they're trying to let the viewer knowthat we are not in Brisbane but in the surburban bushland on its outskirts. It's nosurprise that both series have been remade for American audiences ("Gracepoint" fillsin for "Broadchurch," while "Secrets & Lies" becomes "Secrets And Lies" in the U.S.).Instead of keeping Henderson, the Americans are going with David Tennant ("DoctorWho") in "Gracepoint" and Ryan Phillippe ("Cruel Intentions") plays the murdersuspect in "Secrets And Lies."

As for "Secrets & Lies," so much great stuff is happening on this show -- the writing,the directing and the acting; it manages to be completely authentic without trying toohard. It's riveting stuff, from the whodunit aspect to the family crap the Gundelachsare facing, which everyone can relate to. What's best, though, is that it'll only take sixweeks (or less) to find out who the culprit is.

The perfect summer series.

"Secrets & Lies" premieres Monday, July 7 at 9 p.m. ET/9:30 p.m. NT on CBC.

ABC, led by a season high for the finale of “Secrets & Lies (http://variety.com

/t/secrets-lies/)” and getting a boost from the highest-rated “Revenge” of 2015,

was the top broadcaster in key demos during all four hours of primetime on

Sunday.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “America’s Funniest

Home Videos” (1.4 rating/6 share in adults 18-49, 5.6 million viewers overall)

continues to get the night off to a good start for ABC, winning its hour in all

under-55 categories despite a week-to-week dip. It was followed by the

season’s penultimate episode of “Once Upon a Time” (1.7/6 in 18-49, 5.2

million viewers overall), which was also on par with last week and led its

timeslot.

“Secrets & Lies” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall) matched the

previous week’s series high in 18-49 and will adjust up to at least a 1.8 in the

nationals; as it currently stands, it and “Once Upon a Time” are tied as

Sunday’s top ad-supported series in 18-49, with “Secrets” No. 1 in adults

25-54 (2.2/6) as well. “Secrets” also hit a series high in total viewers.

And one week from its series finale, “Revenge” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.9 million

viewers overall) was up 20% (0.2) week to week to hit a 2015 high in the demo

and match its top score since mid-November. Like the other ABC programs on

the night, it led among the broadcasters for its hour in 18-49 and 25-54.

Elsewhere, Fox followed a repeat of “The Simpsons” (0.7/3 in 18-49, 2.0

million viewers overall) with “Bob’s Burgers” (1.0/4 in 18-49, 2.2 million viewers

overall), which was up a tenth from last week. The 8 o’clock-hour comedies

“The Simpsons” (1.3/5 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall) and “Brooklyn

Nine-Nine” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall) both were down multiple

tenths from last week, but “Family Guy” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers

overall) and “The Last Man on Earth (http://variety.com/t/the-last-man-

on-earth/)” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall). Both “Family,” which

aired its 250th episode, and “Last Man” appear poised to round up in the

nationals too.

CBS got off to a slow start with “60 Minutes” (0.9/4 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers

overall), down 0.2 from last week, but “Madam Secretary (http://variety.com

/t/madam-secretary/)” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 9.7 million viewers overall) was able to

build a bit on the newsmag and match last week’s demo score with its season

finale. The Tea Leoni drama, which has been renewed for a second season,

was Sunday’s No. 10-rated broadcast series in 18-49 while standing as easily

the night’s most-watched program overall. “The Good Wife” (0.9/3 in 18-49,

8.3 million viewers overall) was down a tick from last week but appears likely

to adjust to a 1.0 in the nationals. And at 10 p.m., “Battle Creek” (0.7/2 in

18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall) matched last week’s score. All four CBS

programs easily won their timeslots in total viewers.

NBC’s dramas “A.D. The Bible Continues” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers

overall) and “American Odyssey” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall)

held steady week to week. Opening the night, “Dateline” (0.8/3 in 18-49,

4.9 million viewers overall) was down 0.3 from last week but as usual built

from start to finish.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 1.5/5; Fox, 1.2/4; CBS, 0.9/3;

NBC, 0.8/3; Univision, 0.6/2; Telemundo, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 8.2 million; ABC, 5.5 million; NBC, 4.6 million; Fox, 2.9

million; Univision, 1.6 million; Telemundo, 1.3 million.
