Pope John Paul II, speaking at a noon blessing at the Vatican the same day, offered thanks to all those who helped make sure that “this holy place was given back its true religious identity.” He expressed particular appreciation to the communities of Franciscan friars and nuns and Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox monks who “with notable sacri- fices remained faithful custodians of the sanctuary.” He also encouraged the people of Bethlehem again to take up the road of faith and hope in God. They visited dozens of churches and shrines where they prayed, lit candles in petition and marveled at the baroque masterpieces of art that decorated each church. Ending their 10-day journey through such cities as Salzburg and Zurich and the Bavarian cities of Weis, Oberammergau, Munich, Freis- ing and Rothenburg in Germany, the more than 30 pilgrims were asked to answer one question in their own hearts. “What shall we call this journey for our- selves?” asked Msgr. Joseph F. Schaedel, vicar general of the archdiocese, who traveled with the group as their spiritual director. He wanted to know if it was a vacation, a pilgrimage, or both. Calling it a pilgrimage rather than a vacation could only be said if “we are able, to some degree, to say we grew closer to Christ. I feel we met the Lord in these beautiful shrines and churches, and when we go home we will meet the Lord in those we come into contact with and in our own families,” said Msgr. Schaedel. It wasn’t a job Father Patrick Kellywanted.

He even turned it down a few times.But 18 years later, Father Kelly, princi-

pal of Cathedral High School in Indian-apolis, said his role has been one of thejoys in his life.

Pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Indian-apolis journeyed to Switzerland, Austria andGermany May 2-11. They visited dozens ofchurches and shrines where they prayed, litcandles in petition and marveled at the baroquemasterpieces of art that decorated each church.

Ending their 10-day journey through suchcities as Salzburg and Zurich and the Bavariancities of Weis, Oberammergau, Munich, Freis-ing and Rothenburg in Germany, the more than30 pilgrims were asked to answer one questionin their own hearts.

have been resolved quickly if both parties had notrejected an earlier proposal similar to the final agreement.The spokesman said that, while he was not willing to layblame for the standoff, he believed that both sides couldhave done things differently and prevented such a longand bitter situation.

Responding to a series of suicide bombings, Israelinvaded the West Bank, and on April 2 about 200Palestinians—including armed gunmen—entered theChurch of the Nativity. The Israeli army said Palestiniangunmen on its most-wanted list were among those insidethe church, which it surrounded with tanks. The army cuttelephone lines and food supplies, although some food didget through.

On May 10, the last of the armed Palestinians left thebasilica. Under the terms of a deal worked out in painstak-ing negotiations, 13 gunmen flew to Cyprus and wereexpected to take up residence in European countries; 26other gunmen were released to the Gaza Strip; and 73Palestinian policemen and civilians were allowed to gohome. The Israeli army withdrew from the area shortly afterthe Palestinians left.

The Vatican’s diplomatic representative to Israel and thePalestinian territories, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, toldVatican Radio that the negotiating process that ended thestandoff was “a symbol of the path to follow to reach peacebetween the Israelis and Palestinians.”

The two peoples, he said, cannot continue to see eachother only as threats, but must recognize they must find away to live together.

The archbishop said that, with the siege and occupationover, “there must begin the no-less-important work ofrestoring faith, restoring dignity, restoring hope for thefuture in these two peoples.”

A Franciscan friar who was inside the church compoundduring the standoff said the most difficult moment occurredwhen armed Palestinian gunmen entered the church.

“We found ourselves between two forces, thePalestinians on the inside and the Israeli military on the out-side,” said Father Nicolas Marques, master of clerics of theFranciscans.

Father Marques said the Palestinians brought at least 40guns inside the church. He said there were moments of

extreme tension when the Palestinians waited for a possibleIsraeli attack.

“But I must say that the Palestinians respected us andnever were violent toward us or disrespectful,” he said.

It took an army of volunteers a few hours to clean themess left behind in the church compound.

Members of each of the three Christian denominationscleaned their own section of the Church of the Nativity withkerosene and sawdust. In addition to the garbage left behindby the 200 Palestinians who sought refuge in the church,the Franciscan parish hall and three rooms of the GreekOrthodox convent had been blackened and charred—appar-ently by fires set off by Israeli mortars or flares. Inside theparish hall, brand new organ pipes were a mass of twistedand melted metal.

Bullet casings left from Palestinian guns were strewn ontop of the parish hall and were gathered up as souvenirs,and Arabic graffiti was scrawled on the stairs leading to thehall. In a colored marker, the Palestinians had written thename of the first of their number to die, as well as sloganssuch as “I am ready to face the occupier.”

“It was miserable in here,” said 19-year-old JalilMusalem, who came to help clean the Franciscan section ofthe church. “I can’t begin to describe it.”

As the Israeli-Palestinian standoff drew to a close, LatinPatriarch Michel Sabbah said violence will end in the HolyLand once Israel ends its occupation of Palestinian territo-ries. The patriarch said Israel’s concerns over its securitycaused the occupation of Palestinian territories, which pro-voked Palestinian resistance.

“To go on speaking about Palestinian terrorism withoutseeing the right of the Palestinians to their freedom and toend the occupation is condemning oneself not to see realityand to remain impotent in reaching a solution,” he said in aMay 9 statement.

In Washington, Bishop Wilton D. Gregory of Belleville,

Ill., president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,said the actions of both sides during the siege “raise seriousconcerns about the commitment of both sides to respect andprotect the holy places.

“We hope that the U.S. will persist in doing all that it canto end an unacceptable cycle of violence and to press theparties to return to the arduous task of negotiating a justpeace,” Bishop Gregory said in a May 10 statement. †

It took a school bus and numerous carsto transport all of the St. Roch parish-ioners from the Indianapolis SouthDeanery parish to SS. Peter and PaulCathedral on May 7 for the archdiocesanCatholic Youth Organization’s annual vol-unteer service awards ceremony.

Their pastor, Father James Wilmoth,was the third priest in the history of theawards to receive the St. John BoscoMedallion for distinguished service toyouth. Msgr. Richard Kavanagh and thelate Father John Elford also receivedSt.%John Bosco Medals in past years.

During nearly four decades of ministry,Father Wilmoth has supported CYO sportsas a loyal fan, even standing in the rainone weekend last October to cheer threeSt. Roch teams as they played football atthe Msgr. Downey Field in Indianapolis.

“This man stood in the rain, ankle deepin water and mud, in his favorite spot bythe goalpost on Saturday morning andSunday afternoon” last fall to support theSt. Roch football teams, said Edward J.Tinder, executive director of the CatholicYouth Organization.

“It’s very humbling,” Father Wilmothsaid after the awards ceremony. “Mymom told me a long time ago that there’snothing greater in the world than kids,and she’s right.”

“It is easy to see that the seeds of faithplanted by parents, families and ourCatholic parishes has more than takenroot in these young people,” Lucas said.“Their involvement as leaders and modelsof volunteer service made it clear thattheir faith is already bearing fruit in theirlives and in our community.”

As my summer series of articlesabout sex abuse in the Churchgets underway, first andupfront I want to address my

concern to those of you who havebeen sexually abused. I want to do sowith as much sensitivity and clarityas possible.

I have heard from some of youwho have been abused by clergy orChurch employees. I have heard fromsome of you who were abused byfamily members or acquaintances.And as I remarked in my article lastweek, a veil has been lifted and newdimensions of a painful story havebeen revealed.

As I have listened to these stories,I am appalled by what I hear. I learnhow deeply you have been affectedby the trauma. I am particularly sad-dened both by the depth of sufferingyou experienced and continue toexperience and also by your para-mount concern that it doesn’t happento other innocent people. I under-stand your outrage at the notion thatperpetrators of abuse could be movedto other ministry or Church workassignments where they could repeatthe crime.

Perhaps saddest of all is the despi-cable fact that you were betrayed bypeople whom you trusted most of all.That is a deep sadness.

If even only one person were to beabused, the whole community offaith is affected. We are one body, theBody of Christ. From that perspec-tive, the entire Church is abused.Also from that perspective, if evenonly one priest or Church employeeor volunteer abused only one person,the health of the entire Body of theChurch is affected by this betrayal,and shares the responsibility toaddress the problem.

In the name of Christ, the head ofthe Body, we who are leaders of theChurch, the bishops, are responsibleboth for the care of the victim andfor the removal of the perpetratorfrom ministry.

For the times we have not pas-torally helped you who are victims aseffectively and expeditiously as weshould have, and for the times wehave been careless or at least ineffec-tive in coping with the perpetrators inthe past, I offer a profound apology.

I feel very badly about this and,even though I cannot undo the pastand all that you have suffered and allthat you feel you have lost because ofyour horrible experience as victims, Ipromise that I and those who assistme are doing everything possible tosee that the criminal activity cannot

continue.As I promised last week, we in

archdiocesan administration will doeverything in our power to see thatno priest or Church employee or vol-unteer who has been determined tohave abused a child or minor will beplaced in a ministerial situationwhere further abuse is possible. Can Iguarantee that the crime will neveragain be perpetrated? No one canmake such a guarantee in our worldof imperfect human persons. But Ipromise that we will do everythinghumanly possible to see that theseabominations do not occur again.

Once more, I invite and encourageanyone who has been abused by any-one in service of our Church’s mis-sion to come forward so that we canhelp. We cannot address this situationif we don’t know what we don’tknow.

Some weeks ago, I was readingthat the newly translated RomanMissal, which will be available soon,includes some new texts for use atMass. One of those is a series ofprayers for a Mass offered in repara-tion for sins. As I read this, I imme-diately thought, “That is the Massour archdiocese needs to offer in allof our parishes in reparation for thesins of sex abuse, especially thosecommitted by clergy and Churchemployees and volunteers.” And, thatwe will do. We also will pray forhealing for you who are victims.

I was pleased to learn that at theirmeeting in Rome, among otherthings, the American cardinals pro-posed to the bishops of the UnitedStates that there be a national day ofprayer for reparation and reconcilia-tion for the offenses of sexual abusein our country. When such a date isproposed, our archdiocese will partic-ipate. If it is not proposed in a timelymanner, we will do so sooner.

In the name of our priests, arch-diocesan co-workers and volunteers,I want to tell you how sorry we are,how offended and embarrassed weare, because of the sinful actions of afew among us. We intensify ourefforts to address the problem withinour own ranks.

Equally important, because sexualabuse is a much larger societal prob-lem that is yet to be addressed,through our ministry, social serviceand educational programs we hope tohelp our larger society address theissue more effectively. We pray thatwe continue to learn from our mis-takes—not only by our Church butalso by society in general. Please,let’s pray for each other. †

France re-elected President JacquesChirac on May 5 in a runoff elec-tion against Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Chirac’s victory wasn’t a surprise. Thesurprise was that the runoff was againstLe Pen, the candidate of the far-rightNational Front. Le Pen had unexpect-edly defeated Lionel Jospin, theSocialist candidate, in the first round ofthe election. Since none of the candi-dates received a majority of the votescast, the runoff was required.

Le Pen’s unexpected success isattributed to his protectionist and anti-immigrant platform, and this points outa big change that is occurring through-out Europe—a change that will behighly significant in the future.

The fact is that, while nations in theworld’s Southern Hemisphere are grow-ing rapidly, most of those in the northare declining. Northern countries mustrely on immigration for enough workersto keep their economies healthy.

Demographers figure that nationsmust have a fertility rate of 2.1 childrenper woman to maintain their popula-tion. European countries are far belowthat. Germany’s fertility rate is now1.3, Italy’s and Russia’s 1.2, andSpain’s 1.1. Not only are the fertilityrates low, but the populations are agingand immigration remains the only waythey can maintain a viable society.

European countries are, therefore, let-ting more and more immigrants in,mainly from African countries. Manycitizens object to that, though, whichexplains the popularity of the racist poli-cies of someone like Le Pen in France.

All this will have significant effectson religion. Christianity has been grow-ing rapidly in Africa and Asia at thesame time as Europe has become moresecularized. Already Africa is 46 per-cent Christian. According to the WorldChristian Encyclopedia, “The presentnet increase on that continent is8.4 million new Christians a year(23,000 a day) of which 1.5 million arenet [increase of] new converts (convertsminus defections or apostasies).”Evangelization efforts in the past havepaid off.

Meanwhile, although mostEuropeans still claim to be Christians,that situation is changing. According to

the book The Next Christendom byPhilip Jenkins, already 44 percent ofBritish citizens claim no religion. Only8 percent of French citizens are practic-ing Catholics, and this is typical ofEuropean countries. Europe is nolonger the center of Christianity.

Latin America remains almost completelyChristian, even if the percentage of Catholicshas dropped because of the efforts of Pente-costal religions. Mexico has the third largestChristian population, followed by thePhilippines. Jenkins says, “At present, thePhilippines reports 1.7 million Catholic bap-tisms each year, a number larger than thecombined totals for the four leading Catholicnations of Europe, namely France, Spain,Italy, and Poland.”

South Korea and Vietnam are otherAsian countries with large Christianpopulations. Even China has some-where between 20 million and 50 mil-lion Christians.

It could well be that as a result ofimmigration, Europe will have manymore practicing Christians in the futurethan it does today because AfricanChristians practice their religion.

Jenkins says, “Southern Christiansare far more conservative in terms ofboth beliefs and moral teaching.” Theyalso have a much higher fertility rate.

Many of those African immigrants,though, are Muslims and already todaymosques and Muslim community cen-ters are much more common in Europethan they once were. Europe as a wholehas about 15 million Muslims and theirnumbers will undoubtedly continue toincrease.

As for the United States, today it hasthe world’s largest Christian communitywith about 225 million Christians. Non-Christians comprise only 4 or 5 percentof the total population and that willprobably continue to be the case sincemost immigrants to the United Statesare Christian Hispanics. As Jenkinswrote in The Next Christendom, “Anylikely Muslim growth through immigra-tion will be far exceeded by the contin-uing Christian influx from Africa, Asia,and, above all, Latin America.”

All these demographic changes inthe future will have a large impact onthe future of Christianity in general andCatholicism in particular. †

In the late 1800s and the first half ofthe 20th century, the pope and bishops

accumulated consider-able authority overlower ranking clergyand laypeople. Theyemployed an elaboratesystem of rewards andpunishments to pro-duce compliance withChurch teachings andcodes of conduct.

For clergy, rewardsincluded assignments to bigger and betterparishes and promotions to monsignor.Punishments included being overlookedwhen choice assignments were made orbeing assigned to lesser parishes. Forlaypeople, rewards included elevation toleadership roles in a vast array ofCatholic organizations and occasionalexpressions of appreciation by priests forone’s contributions to the Church. Inaddition to the possibility of excommuni-cation, punishments included guilt, fear ofhell, and penance for one’s sins.

The pope and bishops were able toexercise this authority because lowerranking clergy and laypeople perceivedthe hierarchy’s authority as legitimate. Asa result, even when the rewards and pun-ishments might have seemed severe andmanipulative, they produced high levelsof conformity in belief and practice.

In the last 30 to 40 years, there hasbeen a marked decline in episcopalauthority. This decline has been evident inthe growing tendency for clergy andlaypeople to question the abilities, moti-vations, and decisions of the hierarchy.For example, in his 1977 book, TheAmerican Catholic, Father Andrew M.Greeley accused American bishops ofbeing “bumbling, incoherent nonentities”and ranging from “dull to psychopathic.”

It also has appeared in the laity’sincreased willingness to challenge theirbishops on issues such as the closing ofparishes and parochial schools. It hasbeen found in numerous national surveys,such as our 1999 study indicating that adeclining percentage of Catholics (includ-ing only 30 percent of young adults)believe the hierarchy’s teaching authorityis an important part of their faith. Moreand more Catholics believe they alonehave responsibility for making decisionson faith and morals and, according to

most studies, more and more people aredoing just that.

The decline in episcopal authority hasmany roots. With the decline of the so-called Catholic ghetto in the 1950s and1960s, Catholics were increasinglyexposed to American culture’s suspicionof social institutions, especially ones thatare hierarchically organized.

Also, Vatican II urged Catholics to takeresponsibility for their own faith, thusshifting the locus of authority from thehierarchy to one’s personal conscience.Other influences have included changes inrules many people thought were unchange-able, such as dropping the no-meat-on-Friday regulation, and decisions not tochange rules they felt should be changed,such as Pope Paul VI’s decision to upholdthe ban on artificial birth control.

Another contributing factor has beenthe rising level of education among thelaity and, as I have documented in previ-ous columns, the increased tendency forlaypeople to think for themselves. Stillanother factor has been the tendency forboth liberal and conservative Catholicorganizations to call episcopal authorityinto question as they promote their ownagendas. Books, such as Garry Wills’Papal Sins, also have increased the laity’sawareness of historical cases of corrup-tion and poor judgment among episcopalauthorities.

Thus, as Peter Steinfels rightlyobserves in the April 19, 2002, issue ofCommonweal, the recent scandal relatingto sexual misconduct by priests is not theroot cause of the decline in episcopalauthority. That decline was well underway long before this scandal. However,the scandal, and the way the hierarchy hashandled it, is hastening the decline, espe-cially among young Catholics.

In our 1996 book Laity: American andCatholic, 35 percent of pre-Vatican IICatholics 51 percent of Vatican IICatholics, and 58 percent of post-VaticanII Catholics said that reports of pedophiliaamong Catholic priests had weakenedtheir commitment to the Church.

campers—visiting all the elementaryschools in the archdiocese. He also createdbrochures and newsletters about the camp.

When campers were there in the sum-mer, Hankee was in charge of the teenprogram and the counselors. During thesetwo years, he also worked as a substituteteacher at St. Pius and Chatard.

He sees his work with the young peo-ple as good preparation for the seminary.He learned about communal living andhelped the youth get to know themselves.

“You have to be sincere [with kids];you need to know yourself to do that,”said Hankee.

Meanwhile, he was in a two-year dat-ing relationship.

“Out of the blue,” Hankee said, hereceived a call from Father Paul Etienne,then vocations director, inviting him tothe archbishop’s house for dinner oneNovember evening.

“He told me that it was not to sign meup, just to see if I was interested,” Hankeesaid.

“The priesthood was always in theback of my mind. I didn’t want to be mar-ried 10 years and then think I should havebeen a priest,” he said.

At the dinner, there were six othermen. Hankee hardly said a word.

But he did listen when Father Etiennesaid, “The best place to discern whetheryou want to be a priest is at the seminary.”

“It clicked,” said Hankee. “I hadalways thought if you go to the seminary,that’s what you want to do.” On the wayout after dinner, he set up a meeting.

Father Etienne, who assumed thatHankee wanted to start in the seminary inAugust, was surprised that he wanted tostart right away, in January 1998.

Hankee said, “I didn’t come to theseminary with the idea that this is what Iwant to do. I wanted to learn what Godwas calling me to do. And other peoplewere doing the same thing. The environ-ment was prayerful, so I could concen-trate on what God was calling me to do.”

By the third year, during his ministry

With a smile, Hankee says he is 30—“the same age Jesus started his ministry.”

He has two older brothers—Mike, 32,and Pat, 34. He will preside at Pat’s wed-ding on July 7.

Hankee’s mother, Madonna, has taughtfirst grade at St. Pius for about 20 years.She will celebrate her birthday on the dayher son is ordained. His dad, Edwin, whoworks for AT&T, is the oldest of two froma Logansport family.

“He is a quiet and humble man,” saidthe future priest, “but I get my sense ofhumor from him.” His father was veryinvolved when he was growing up, coach-ing him in Little League and spendingcountless hours throwing the baseballaround in the backyard.

Hankee enjoys hiking and basketball—“anything sporting.” He has joined hisclassmates in learning to play golf. Healso likes to grill—from smoking andshredding to barbecuing.

Paul and Anna Steiner, his maternalgrandparents who were married 54 years,were “a big influence. They were a typi-cal German farm family, praying therosary every day,” he said. His grandfa-ther died 10 years ago, but Hankee hadstarted to study for the priesthood beforehis grandmother died.

She gave him advice: “You don’t haveto be a great priest. Just be a good one.”and “Do your best and let God do the rest.”

Msgr. Joseph F. Schaedel will give thehomily at Hankee’s first Mass on theafternoon of June 2 at St. Pius. He said helikes the way the vicar general presides atHoly Rosary in Indianapolis—his senseof liturgy.

When they first started talking, theordinand said he realized, “He has thesame kind of sense of humor.”

Hankee said that the monsignorshowed him “the importance of beingyourself. The best priests I’ve seen arejust themselves.”

For the same reason, he likes FatherGerald Kirkhoff, pastor of St. Jude Parishin Indianapolis.

“They’re good people. They really careabout the people they minister to,” he said.

Both have a good sense of humor. Theywere good to me even when I tested thelimits.”

Another role model is Msgr. FrancisTuohy, pastor of Christ the King Parish inIndianapolis, who spent time with him,once familiarizing him with the history ofsome of the small churches in the easternpart of the archdiocese.

The biggest challenge of his seminaryformation was “surrendering myself tothe process,” he said. “Though it is still achallenge, I am now more accepting ofwhat God is asking. I am getting rid ofmy own desire to control.”

Hankee said that the most excitingthing he sees in his future is what priestsdo—the celebration of the sacraments.

“I am able to be with people at the mostimportant times in their lives,” he said. “Itis an honor and at the same time hum-bling—getting to meet people, getting toknow them, and being able to be Christ tothem.

“It’s an exciting way of life,” saidHankee. “Naturally, I look forward to pre-siding at the sacraments. It’s another wayof connecting with people.

“The other exciting thing is, you just

don’t know what’s going to happen. Youreally don’t know how your life is goingto evolve,” he said. “You put your life inGod’s hands and let him take you wherehe wants you to go and do what he wantsyou to do.”

Eight priests will be ordained this year,five of whom were Hankee’s classmates atSaint Meinrad. Their support helps him.

“We have a great time together,” hesaid. “We keep each other humble withthe jokes we make. We’re also very goodfriends. We know each other very well.”

Hankee believes that the Holy Spiritnurtured the seed that his grandfatherplanted.

“I believe that’s how you call people tothe priesthood,” he said. “We are the oneswho must go out and invite people andthen trust God to take care of the rest.

“People need to see it’s a lifestyle, nota job,” he said.

“It is worthwhile,” said Hankee, “and itcan be lived, with God’s help.”

WASHINGTON (CNS)—In more than20 cities, victims of sex abuse by priestsheld news conferences and demonstrationsto ask their local bishop to back tougherlaws against sexual abuse of minors.

The local actions May 9, in 19 U.S.and two Canadian cities, were coordi-nated by SNAP, Survivors Network ofthose Abused by Priests.

They proposed that in all U.S. statesand Canadian provinces:

• Civil and criminal statutes of limita-tions be eliminated or extended for thesexual abuse of minors.

• All clergy be made mandatedreporters for suspected child abuse.

• All dioceses immediately “stop takingadvantage of legal technicalities—such asstatutes of limitations—to avoid being heldaccountable for abusive clergy.”

In Chicago, SNAP founder BarbaraBlaine told reporters that when she metrecently with Cardinal Francis E. Georgehe said he would work for an expandedstatute of limitations on child sex abuse.

Robert Gilligan, associate director ofthe Illinois Catholic Conference, throughwhich the cardinal and other Illinois bish-ops address legislative issues, said the

• An 80-year-old Jesuit, Father EdwardT. Burke, was arrested May 9 in SantaClara County, Calif., and charged with sex-ually abusing a mentally retarded man.

• Former Boston priest Ronald H.Paquin was ordered held on $100,000 bailafter pleading innocent to charges that heraped an altar boy numerous times in1990-92, when he was an associate pastorat St. John the Baptist Parish in Haverhill.

• Suspended Boston priest Father PaulR. Shanley, arrested recently in Californiaand extradited to Massachusetts on chargesof child rape, had his bond set at $750,000May 7 after he pleaded innocent. Bail wasreduced to $300,000 May 10,

• Father Charles V. Cross, 68, ofBirmingham, Ala., was suspended fromall priestly ministry May 10 and placedon retirement after Birmingham BishopDavid E. Foley received what hedescribed as “substantial and credible”allegations of sexual molestation ofminors. He had previously been barredfrom pastoral work because of unrelatedclaims of sexual misconduct.

• Father John E. Leonard of GlenAllen, Va., was placed on leave May 6while the Richmond Diocese investigatedan allegation of improper sexual behaviorwith a high school seminary student 30years ago. He said he is innocent. †

Raymond P. Kempisty, chancellor andcommunications director for the archdio-cese, said Monahan’s “claim that thearchdiocese coerced her to drop accusa-tions against Father Schwind in 1990 andto cover up the investigation is false.”

He said Monahan’s allegations wereinvestigated by both the archdiocese andthe Baltimore City State’s Attorney, whomet with Monahan and Father Schwind atthe time. “The archdiocese cooperated fullyin that investigation,” Kempisty added.

In other developments:• Father Sleeva R. Policetti, a priest

from India serving in St. Tarcissus Parishin Chicago since 1996, fled to India inearly May as archdiocesan authoritieswere about to suspend him and civilauthorities were preparing to investigateallegations that he had an inappropriaterelationship with a teen-age girl.

• The Miami Archdiocese suspendedFathers Ricardo Castellanos and AlvaroGuichard pending investigation of thelawsuit claims of a former altar boy thatthe two had sex with him and numerousother boys in the early 1970s. Both priestsdenied the claims.

• Father Robert Morris was restored tohis pastorate at St. Mary Parish in Lutz,Fla., after a 10-day suspension while theSt. Petersburg Diocese investigated alle-gations he had fondled a 13-year-old girlwhen he was in the seminary 14 yearsago. The diocese said Father Morris tooka polygraph test that showed his denialswere truthful, and there were inconsisten-cies in the claim of misconduct that castserious doubt on it.

• Six former altar boys added theirsexual abuse complaints to an earlierclaim that led to the resignation April 15

state’s bishops are backing a bill thatwould extend the statute of limitations forcriminal prosecution of child molestersfrom the current three years past the vic-tim’s 18th birthday to 10 years after thevictim turns 18.

Gilligan said the bishops also back aprovision in the Illinois bill that would addclergy to the list of mandated reporters inthe state, provided that measure retains itscurrent exception for priest-penitent confi-dentiality in confession.

Meanwhile, the Archdiocese ofBaltimore strongly denied allegations thatCardinal William H. Keeler in any waycovered up a case in which a former nunaccused a priest of raping her in a parishrectory in 1989.

Rita Monahan, a 53-year-old formermember of the Sisters of ChristianCharity, said at a May 9 press conferencein Baltimore that Cardinal Keeler askedher to drop criminal charges againstFather Thomas R. Schwind following thealleged incident on Feb. 12, 1989.

Father Schwind, 50, was pastor ofSt. Ambrose Parish in Baltimore at thetime. He left the priesthood in 1993, mar-ried and is now pastor of New Covenant

through the beer-loving countryside of Bavaria, Germany.“I came as a tourist, and left as a pilgrim,” she said.For many, the trip was their first pilgrimage experience.

Mass was celebrated each day in churches that had pil-grims craning their necks heavenward to look at the vari-ous works of art on ceilings, columns and pulpits.

Two places that pilgrims visited had direct links to theArchdiocese of Indianapolis, spanning more than 1,000years of Church history—Einsiedeln, Switzerland, thehome of St. Meinrad that led to the founding of SaintMeinrad Seminary in southern Indiana, and Eichstätt,Germany, where Beech Grove and Ferdinand Benedictinenuns can trace their original roots.

The current Einsiedeln abbot, Martin Werlen, studied atthe Indiana seminary for one year in 1987 before becom-ing abbot last year.

He greeted Msgr. Schaedel and other pilgrims duringtheir visit to the abbey church.

The church has become a popular pilgrimage destina-tion, attracting about 150,000 visitors annually who vener-ate the Black Madonna statue and pray near the site whereSt. Meinrad lived.

St. Meinrad was murdered by robbers in 861 atEinsiedeln. Legend states that two black ravens followedthe robbers alerting people to the hermit’s death.

Today, black ravens are part of the abbey’s coat of armsand are portrayed in various paintings throughout thechurch.

A focal point of the monks’ prayer life is the statue ofthe Black Madonna in a special chapel inside the mainchurch.

Each night at vespers, the monks process to the chapelwhere they sing the Salve Regina.

Indianapolis pilgrims attended a Mass celebrated byMsgr. Schaedel in the Lady Chapel that is home to theBlack Madonna statue. The statute was blackened by cen-turies of exposure to smoke from votive candles.

It is said that Christ appeared in 948 and consecratedthe church, which was built on the site of St. Meinrad’soriginal cell and chapel. The miracle was investigated andconfirmed by Pope Leo VIII and ratified by many of hissuccessors, the last ratification being by Pius VI in 1793,according to the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Einsiedeln has been famous for centuries, creating aspiritual legacy that ranges from its study of letters, print-ing and music in the abbey’s library to the missionary zealthat came across the ocean to Indiana.

That founding spirit has produced 12,648 alumni fromthe Indiana school who studied for high school, college orgraduate classes at the seminary.

More than 3,700 of those students have gone on tobecome priests. The seminary is one of the 10 largest inthe nation, said Mary Jeanne Schumacher, director of com-munications for Saint Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana.

Msgr. Schaedel told the pilgrims that Einsiedeln’slegacy is an example of what faith can accomplish.

“A monk named Meinrad made a difference here,” saidMsgr. Schaedel. “The fruits of the monks’ labor here hasproduced one the largest seminaries training priests” inSt. Meinrad, Ind.

While those on the trip may never be asked to makesuch a missionary journey as the monks from Einsiedelndid, they can still make a difference, he said.

“We can make a difference through God’s grace,”Msgr. Schaedel said. “We can pray like those whostarted [this monastery] and we can make a difference inthe lives of others.” †

A maypole stands outside the Basilica Ottobeuren in Germany. Themaypole was originally part of a pagan custom that evolved to havenational and religious meanings. During the month of May, consideredthe Blessed Virgin’s month, the poles can be seen across Europe andat various churches to honor Mary. In Germany, the maypole was alsoplanted outside a sweetheart’s window.

Castle Neuschwanstein in Hohenschwangau, Germany, was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in homage to his friend, composerRichard Wagner, in the late 1800s. Wagner never saw the castle and the king only lived there six months before his death. The castlecontains the king’s private Catholic chapel and a throne room that resembles a chapel with figures of Christ and the Apostles. Ludwigwas known for building castles, and this one inspired the fairytale castle at Disneyland and Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

Pilgrims visited the baroque style church at the BasilicaOttobeuren in Germany. The church was founded in 764.

How the Church ought to interact with the various cultures in which it finds itself is an ongoingquestion, one that is growing in urgency. The Church has a pressing need to immerse itself and makeitself understood by the rest of the world.

When Father Michael Kirwen went toTanzania as a missionary, he was eager toshare his Christian faith.

What he found there, though, werepeople with an understanding of life sodifferent from his own that he didn’tknow how to begin the conversation.

In his book The Missionary and theDiviner, Father Kirwen says that, “Thereal differences were not that the peopledidn’t have electricity, but that their wayof thinking about the world was sostrange to me. Their cosmology baffledme.”

Father Kirwen recalls that one man hespoke with explained that, “The reasonthere is no need for a Savior like Jesus isthat humankind has retained the goodnessgiven at creation.”

Moreover, in this worldview the incar-nation made no sense: “Don’t you seehow poor your image of God is if you canmake God into a human? Then God is nolonger God.”

Father Kirwen’s book records severalsuch conversations in which the messageof Christianity as he tried to present itseemed out of sync with the people’sbasic assumptions. It also records how hisown beliefs were challenged by the peo-ple he met.

He explains, “Today, the conversationsdescribed in this book go on inside me allthe time.”

Father Kirwen’s struggle is anythingbut new.

The first disciples nearly 2,000 years

ago argued fiercely among themselvesabout how best to spread the good newsof Christ. Some felt that to follow Jesusone had first to become a Jew, which formen meant to be circumcised. Others feltthat Jesus’ message transcended hisJewishness and therefore new convertsdidn’t need to follow Jewish law.

Eventually, Christians decided thatnon-Jews would be welcomed into thenewly emerging Church. Jesus’ signifi-cance, in other words, transcended theparticular culture in which he had lived.

Yet, how the Church ought to interactwith the various cultures in which it findsitself is an ongoing question, one that isgrowing in urgency.

These days, television and the Internetconfront us with beliefs and customs thatonce might have seemed foreign andremote. Whereas before we might haveconfined our interactions to people whothought and prayed and lived pretty muchlike we did, now we are faced with abewildering and dazzling array of reli-gious and social movements.

Father Kirwen notes that when he wentto Tanzania in 1963, “African religionshad either been ignored or dismissed byChristian missionaries as primitive orbackward.”

Little was known about them, and evenless was understood. In our current era,however, a few clicks on the computercan put anyone in touch with the beliefsof people on the far side of the globe.

Many theologians say that the Churchwould be an “alien”—outsider—to the cul-tures it lives in if it didn’t converse withthem, attempting to know them and torelate positively to what is best about them.

The same is true for the Church’s peo-ple, coming from many cultural groups.They’ll be aliens to each other if theydon’t converse, don’t listen to each otherand don’t learn about each other’s enrich-ing characteristics.

Our globalization era enables peopleof different cultures to mingle closely onwhat, in effect, is a shrinking planet.

People sitting next to each other atMass—or at least utilizing the samechurch building—might not have beentogether in the same parish severaldecades ago.

The risk is that these people may notever really speak to each other. It is pos-sible for different cultural groups to liveparallel, nonintersecting lives in aparish—sharing space, but not sharingChristian life.

The global community’s different cul-tures need to get to know each other well.Remaining “aliens” just won’t work.

urgency may be. When early Christianstried to explain the significance of Jesusin the Graeco-Roman culture of their day,they turned for assistance to the imagesthey had at hand.

Clement of Rome, for example, did nothesitate to recall the god whom theGreeks believed was born of the union ofZeus and a mortal woman and who wasthought to have died and been reborn. Inhis writings, Clement said that Jesus wasa “new Dionysus.” It was an image theGreeks could understand.

In fact, many symbols, rituals andbeliefs that Christians now take forgranted had a source in pre-Christian cul-tures.

For example, statues of Mary seated ona throne with her son in her lap are pat-terned on statues of the goddess Isis hold-ing her son Horus.

The fact that Christmas is celebratedon Dec. 25 dates back to earlier paganfestivals of the winter solstice at that time.This was a special day for people then aswell as to Roman celebrations of the birthof the god Mithras.

Moreover, when in the fourth centuryChristians felt it was time to spell out the

relationship between Jesus and God, theyturned for assistance to Greek philosophy.The Son of God, they said, was“homoousios” (with or of the same natureas the Father). Even the Catholic dogmaof transubstantiation draws in its expres-sion on Aristotle’s pre-Christian meta-physics.

In other words, Christianity always hasbeen both in tension with and at the sametime fully at home in the world’s cultures.

The same is true today.Christians in Asia, for example, are

looking at Jesus in light of their traditions.Thus, for example, to explain the incarna-tion, some will point to the yin-yang sym-bol: In Jesus, humanity and divinity are inperfect balance much as in the yin-yangeach side complements the other.

Catholics in Africa draw on traditionalreverence for ancestors to help explain themeaning of the saints.

Christians today draw upon the culturethat surrounds them just as did theChristians of long ago. This processenriches both the Church and the culturesof the world.

Jerusalem is holy to about half of theworld’s people—the 2.7 billion Jews,

Christians andMuslims. The spiritualsignificance of the citymust be understood inany attempt to solvethe problems of theHoly Land.

The Jews were thefirst to make the cityholy. King David con-quered the Jebusite

city of Jerusalem about the year 1000B.C. and made it his political capital inorder to unite the kingdoms of Israel andJudah. But it didn’t become a holy cityuntil David moved the Ark of theCovenant there. The Ark was a chest thatMoses built to contain the tablets of theMosaic Law.

David hoped to build a permanent tem-ple for the Ark, but that honor went toDavid’s son Solomon. He built a magnifi-cent Temple for the Ark, and from that

time to the present Jerusalem has been thevery heart of Judaism.

Solomon’s Temple was destroyed bythe Babylonians in 587 B.C. and rebuilt byZerubbabel about 50 years later. Herod theGreat built a spectacular new Temple from18 B.C. to 64 A.D. The Romans destroyedit in the year 70 A.D.

Today the Western Wall, the retainingwall of the Temple Mount, is all of theTemple that still exists, and here iswhere religious Jews gather for prayersand ceremonies. Observant Jews do notgo onto the Temple Mount itself for fearof walking where the Holy of Holiesonce was, since they do not know theprecise place.

Jerusalem is also the spiritual centerfor Christians because of its associationwith the life of Jesus. As an infant, Jesuswas presented to the Lord in the Templethat Herod built, he accompanied hisparents on their trips to Jerusalem, andhe entered the city in a triumphal proces-sion. It was in Jerusalem that Jesustaught, died, rose from the dead andascended into heaven.

Perhaps I should quit listening toNational Public Radio. It offers so many

programs which I findinteresting and infor-mative, but once in awhile it infuriates me.

The latest cause ofmy frustration was aman who’s written apopular book titledThe Way We Talk Now.I can’t remember hisname, but he’s sup-

posed to be an expert in linguistics.On this occasion, he was talking about

the words “chastity” and “celibacy,” partlyas they pertain to the recent clergy sexscandals in the Catholic Church. And whathe said astonished me because it was socondescending and just plain incorrect.

This “expert” announced that “chastity”is a word that is practically never usedtoday. Hello! Obviously, this person hasnever been exposed to a Catholic setting ofany kind, since that word is not only usedbut possibly worn to a frazzle by those ofour persuasion, especially parents of teen-agers.

He defined the meaning of “chastity” inthe early Church as a harsh discipline,mainly confined to women who were, after

all, the licentious daughters of Eve. Youknow, chastity belts and all that.

The expert went on to link it with wordshaving the same roots, such as “chastise-ment,” until by the time he was through,not only the word, but chastity itself,seemed so ugly a concept that it wasn’t fitto spit on. He belittled the “vocation” ofchastity, whatever that means.

Along the way, he suggested thatchastity was only mandated for a certainunhappy few in the early Church and, byimplication, for only a few religiousfanatics today. Not once did he iterate theChurch’s teaching, which is and hasalways been, that we are all called tochastity.

Nowhere did he mention that marriedcouples and single people, both heterosex-ual and homosexual, are called to chastity,as are clergy and religious. Nowhere in hisremarks was chastity even remotely con-nected to the true meaning of human sexu-ality.

Finally, the expert got around to theword “celibacy.” He stated correctly thatthis means “the state of not being married.”But, he also claimed that celibacy doesn’tmean this anymore. Rather, it’s a vagueterm implying abstinence from sexualexpression, period.

The real meaning of chastity and celibacy

Rumor has it that young adults don’ttake marriage seriously. They utter the twocovenantal words “I do” with as much fore-

thought as their “Yes,please” response to theguy at McDonald’swho asks whether theywant fries with theirQuarter Pounder.

In her book TheStarter Marriage andthe Future ofMatrimony, authorPamela Paul cites

Census Bureau statistics to support herargument that the “starter marriage”—first-time marriages that last five years or lessand do not yield children—is a growingtrend among young adults. Divorce is upfrom 253,000 among 25- to 29-year-olds in1962 to more than 3 million among 18- to29-year-olds in 1998.

Unfortunately, I see these statistics allaround me. Only six years ago, my husbandand I sat at our wedding reception’s table ofhonor with the best man and his wife andthe maid of honor and her fiance. Both cou-ples now are divorced. One marriage lastedthree years; the other six months.

But it is unfair to say all young adultsare incapable of walking down the aislewith a firm resolve to make things work—in good times and in bad, in sickness and inhealth, until death.

The divorce rate has leveled off at43 percent today, which means the cup ismore than half full.

Success stories abound. I learned aboutthem while compiling a book with Michael

Leach called I Like Being Married.As part of my research, I talked to young

couples who intend to make good on thepromise of forever that they made as bridesand grooms, a commitment symbolized bythe gold, silver or platinum wedding bandsthey wear. The vows they recited as part oftheir wedding ceremonies are more than lipservice or a sappy Kleenex momentinserted into a theatrical performance at thealtar.

Some young adults have wonderful rolemodels in their parents. Others, like me andmy husband, have emerged from brokenhomes with a fierce determination to buildupon a strong foundation.

My other half and I are figuring thingsout as we go along, but divorce is not anoption. For us, marriage isn’t a work con-tract where you can give your two-weeknotice upon realizing that your boss doesn’tknow what he’s talking about.

Marriage is a sacrament—a holy andpermanent uniting of two persons.

What’s scary is that there’s no guaranteethat your husband will always be able tocontrol his impulsive shopping sprees oryour wife won’t turn into a complete slob.It’s definitely a risk. As Mike Mason wrotein The Mystery of Marriage, “Marriage is adecision to put all the eggs in one basket, togo for broke, to bet all the marbles.”

It’s worth the gamble.Like most young adults, I like being

married because it means I don’t have todate anymore. There are other benefits, ofcourse: like waking up to my best friendevery morning, having someone with whomto share a pizza and rent a movie, a bouquetof red roses on Valentine’s Day, free advicewhether I ask for it or not, and recognizingmy son’s impish dimples as those belong-ing to the man to whom I said ‘I do’ andmeant it.

At a family gathering, my teen-agegrandson, David, told me how he enjoyed

his after-school job ina mobile home resi-dential area: “Thehomes are double-wides and really nice,and the owners are allolder people … youknow—people whoare over 35.” I pokeda 30-somethingdaughter nearby and

laughed, “You qualify.” In fact, we alllaughed because, at that moment, every-one in the room qualified except Davidand my toddler grandson, Sam.

It’s all a matter of perspective. Surely,Sam must think of David as an olderfolk.

When my mother turned 39, I wasshocked to realize she was “that old.” Infact, I said something tactless that madeher cry. I don’t recall what, but I doremember how hurt she was, although Iapologized. I couldn’t figure out at thetime why she was so sensitive. When Iturned 39, I understood.

By the same token, when planning agala surprise 80th birthday party for myhusband’s mother and a similar event formy own mother years later, all the guestswere as thrilled as I to acknowledge sucha milestone age. And each additionaldecade is reason for even more celebra-tion. So, why is turning 39 any different?

Again, perspective. Each person wellunder 80 seems to view another birthdayas being one step closer to old age—or(as is often joked) “the alternative”(death). The eighth, ninth, and 10thdecades are viewed as accomplishments.

Plentiful advice about remaining youngor aging well saturates our society;whereas many cultures accept andhonor—even revere—the elderly and theirwisdom and experience.

Blessed is the family that teaches chil-dren the value of respect and courtesy foreveryone in their lives regardless of age,intelligence, physical ability, appearance,community standing or material goods.

Didn’t the Lord command us to loveGod above all else and our neighbor asourselves? Didn’t Christ mingle with allages, even children? Life at every stage is

Jerusalem: holy to three great religionsThe Church of the Holy Sepulcher in

Jerusalem is built over the site where Jesuswas crucified and buried. In Jerusalem,too, is the Upper Room where Jesus andhis apostles had their Last Supper andwhere the Holy Spirit descended on theapostles. This site became the firstChristian church, the Mother Church ofChristianity.

For Muslims, Jerusalem is the thirdholiest city, after Mecca and Medina inSaudi Arabia. They believe thatMuhammad ibn Abdallah, the founder ofIslam, had a mystical experience in whichhe traveled by winged steed to the rock onthe Temple Mount and from there wascaught up to heaven.

That rock is now inside the magnificentDome of the Rock, built in 692 on theTemple Mount, which the Muslims callthe Haram al-Sharif. Today the Dome ofthe Rock is the most recognizable featureof the Old City of Jerusalem. Also on theHaram al-Sharif is the Al-Aqsa Mosque,“the farthest mosque” mentioned in theMuslims’ Quran. This is the destination ofMuslims each Friday for their prayers. †

The expert must be given some credit,however. At least he didn’t say that priestscommit sexual sins because they’reunmarried. And, he frowned upon the sex-ual exploitation of children and sexualpreying upon young adults by anyone,priest or not.

On the other hand, he implied that thediscipline of chastity, which in his view isimposed solely upon priests these days,probably makes it harder for them to keeptheir hands off the defenseless. He gavethe impression that living without sex isimpossible for anyone, priest or not.

It was the old “you’ll die or go blind ifyou don’t have sex” theory, so widespreadtoday in our enlightened society. It’s gottenso bad that middle-schoolers, as docu-mented on the “Oprah” TV show, areengaging in oral sex under the mistakenimpression that (a) it’s not real sex and (b)you can’t get venereal diseases doing it.

It’s time we all stood up and shouted,“Enough!” It’s time we reminded theexperts, our kids and the world at largethat chastity is a source of joyful gracewhen it’s defined and applied correctly.

The Sunday ReadingsSunday, May 19, 2002• Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11• 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13• John 20:19-23

This weekend, the Church celebrates theFeast of Pentecost. After Easter and

Christmas, it is the prin-cipal feast in the entireyear.

The Acts of theApostles supplies thefirst reading. The storyis familiar. The Apostleswere together inJerusalem. The HolySpirit came upon themin a tangible and power-

ful way.As a result of this divine power within

them, they boldly went into the streets ofJerusalem and publicly proclaimed Jesus asRedeemer. Great crowds heard them.People came from backgrounds with manydiffering languages, yet they all understoodthe Apostles.

To understand this reading, it helps torecall several symbols from the OldTestament. God came in visible circum-stances in Old Testament history. A suddensurge of high wind was one such symbol.One of the greatest of these symbols ofdivine presence was fire. Moses found Godin a bush that was burning but not con-sumed by the flames.

It was not as if a natural phenomenonhappened to the Apostles, nor that a symbolof God came into their midst. Rather, Godcame to them.

The diversity of the crowds is anothersymbol. The Apostles possessed the Gospel.They had learned it from Jesus. They wentinto the open to preach the Gospel. Theyencountered persons of every nationality.

Indeed, the listing of nationalities wasmeant to include all humanity. The Apostlesaddressed these people, and the peopleunderstood. The Gospel touches the deepestneeds of every heart. Everyone needs theGospel. Marvelously, God’s plan is to pro-vide the Gospel to all people.

St. Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthiansfurnishes the second reading.

This illustrates for us the fact thatbecause of sin we humans need to behealed. We are limited. We are shortsighted.We are imperceptive. We can be confusedor misled. God heals us. As a result, we cansee. We can understand. We can be strong.

While healed by the Holy Spirit, and

empowered by the Holy Spirit, we do notsurrender our individualities when webecome followers of Jesus. If anything, ourindividualities are enhanced.

We simply turn our individual talentsinto the one great mainstream of love andfaith that is universal Christian disciple-ship.

The Gospel of John provides the lastreading. It is a Resurrection Narrative. Ittoo is a familiar story. Again, the Apostlesare central to the story.

Throughout the Gospel, Jesus hastaught the Apostles about God. They havebeen special students, receiving moreinstruction than the others have.

At last, Jesus commissions them to goforth and proclaim the Gospel. They are toact on behalf of the Lord. Jesus commis-sions them for the task. He gives them thepower to forgive sins, initiating the sacra-ment of reconciliation.

The Lord possesses divine power. Heappears despite locked doors. He acts asGod in conferring this power to forgiveupon the Apostles.

ReflectionThe Church celebrates only one of the

ancient Jewish holidays that Jesus and theApostles would have celebrated. It is theFeast of Pentecost. Long ago, sadly,Christians stopped celebrating Yom Kippurand Rosh Hashanah and the others.

Pentecost has ancient roots in theHebrew religion. By the time of Christ, ithad come to be a celebration of the Jews’nationhood, of their ethnic cohesion. It isin this context that the Christian feastoccurs.

This weekend, we celebrate the Church.We do not celebrate a structure of gover-nance or legal identity. The Church, in itsfinest theological definition, means theentire People of God. Again, however, themeaning is not static.

Rather, it is dynamic. The Churchbrings into one union all those who lovethe Lord. They are individuals, but theyturn their individualities toward God. Thelove of Christ impels them.

Christians then serve others, as Jesusserved. They love God, as Jesus loved theFather.

Critical to the vitality of the Church,and to the integrity of the Church, is itsconnection with Jesus. From Jesus, theChurch and its people altogether drawdivine life itself in the Holy Spirit. Thisconnection is through the Apostles. †

QI have two friends who left theCatholic Church years ago. Now they

both want to return, butdon’t know how tobegin this process. I’msure other formerCatholics would alsolike to know how tocome back to theChurch. (Maryland)

AYou are right.Many Catholics

have departed from the practice of theirfaith and sometime later wish to return tothe Church, but are discouraged becausethey envision a complicated process.

Most of us don’t realize how hesitantand afraid Catholics can be who have beenaway, perhaps feel some guilt and fre-quently see themselves as somehowunworthy to be active in the Church again.

Theoretically, all a person needs to do isreturn to the sacraments—penance and theEucharist—and resume a prayer life andregular participation in the Mass.

In practice, however, most of the timesomething more is at least helpful, if notpractically necessary. If a Catholic hasbeen away from the Church for a numberof years, much may have happened in theintervening time that could be unfamiliarand there is a need to “catch up” again.

Particularly, anyone who has not beento Mass for the past 30 years or so willhave missed many changes in the liturgiesof the Mass and sacraments that will con-fuse them if they’re not prepared.

Perhaps most obviously, experiencingand trying to participate in the Mass inEnglish will be puzzling unless someonehelps them understand reasons for thosechanges, and how they enhance and enrichour Catholic worship.

Another factor in helping them returncould be the reason they stopped living aCatholic life in the first place. A real orperceived injury, suffered from a priest orother representative of the Church, or aserious misunderstanding are reasons ahuge number of Catholics stay away,often for years. They need help in heal-ing.

Whatever the reason, I believe it is wellworthwhile for “former” Catholics to meetwith a priest or other parish minister toexplain what is necessary and ease theirreturn. A priest also will be able to helpdeal appropriately with other possible fac-tors—such as previous marriages—thatwill necessarily be involved in renewingtheir practice of the Catholic faith.

QSince Sept. 11, we hear often thatMuslims have the same God as

Christians. But in John (17:3), Jesus sayssalvation means knowing the one true God,the one who sent Jesus Christ. Paul says(1 Cor 8:6) there is one God, the Fatherwho made all things. Church leaders saywe must “dialogue” with Muslims, but Idon’t see anything in common. (New York)

AIslam and Christianity do believe inthe same God, if by that we mean the

one who created all things, a personalbeing with whom we relate on this earthand with whom those who are saved will,in some way, spend eternity.

The massive differences between usfocus on how this God has revealed him-self to us, who did the revealing, what Godexpects from us and how we view theabsolute, “unique” nature of our religions.

Christians and Muslims see their faith asthe final, and only, valid revelation of God.For us, the bearer of that revelation and theembodiment, or incarnation, of God, isJesus Christ. For them, the final prophet,the supreme messenger and revealer ofGod, is their founder, Muhammad.

Both religions see themselves as mis-sionary, intended for the whole of human-ity. Jesus commanded his disciples to carryhis “good news,” his life, to all people, tothe ends of the earth. Muslims believe it istheir duty to bring all people to the “truepath” of Islam, the only authentic worshipand service of God, although EasternChristian Churches significantly influencedMuhammad’s theology and many of hisprescriptions for worship.

In February, Cardinal ChristophSchonborn of Vienna, Austria, said that ourvery certitude about Jesus and the Churchobliges us “not merely to the appearance ofdialogue, but rather to a profound readinessto search for the truth together.”

First, we are one human family, sharingone origin and one destiny. We need toidentify and explore together the “greatpuzzles of human existence” to which allreligions try to provide some answer.

Second, we cannot be arrogant about thepriceless treasure of the truth entrusted tous by Christ, a truth we see now only“dimly” in an imperfect mirror (1 Cor 13).

Third, the responsibility of caring forthe world and the whole human familyhas been entrusted to all human beingstogether. Engagement with Islam and allpeople of good will, he said, “confessesthat God’s love and providence excludeno one. That is the truly ‘absolute claim’of Christianity.” †

Everyone is calledto live in good rela-tion by loving andtaking care of oneanother. From bap-tism to confirmationand beyond, allChristians are calledto follow Jesus Christ.

Continuing to follow baptism, every

Christian is called by God to a full life, orwhat can be said as a vocation. This isour sign of bonding and unity. Everyonecalled by God has a vocation; eventhough they might not be the same oreven similar, we all have one.

Men and women who decide to serveGod and the Catholic Church have some-how found their vocation in life, and thatis to help other people with the stories ofChrist and eventually find their own voca-tions.

I attended Little Flower School inIndianapolis from kindergarten througheighth-grade. I had never been activelyinvolved in a parish before, but that soon

changed. Our parish priest spoke sostrongly of the importance of becoming aCatholic that within a year my motherbegan the Rite of Christian Initiation ofAdults (RCIA) process and studied theCatholic Church and faith. The followingspring, I was baptized. Recently, I wasconfirmed.

This is an example of how priests liveout their religious vocations by educatingothers and convincing them that this is theright path in becoming a follower of Jesus.

Our religious help us live out our lifein the guidance of helping us find a pro-fession in which we may fully expressour religious beliefs.

Going to Catholic schools my wholelife already has helped me realize the wayin which I want my life to be lived out—by following in his footsteps and continu-

Three national softball titles in sixyears have put the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Pomeroys in the spotlight.

The women’s softball team named fora Sister of Providence won their thirdUnited States Collegiate AthleticAssociation championship on April 27 atLaGrange College in LaGrange, Ga., witha 5-0 victory over the NorthwestChristian College team from Eugene, Ore.

It was an exciting tournament forAmanda Neal of Paris, Ill., the Pomeroys’first-year coach.

“Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College hasa great softball program,” Neal said. “I’mjust glad we could continue that traditionthis year. [Senior] Tammy Smelcer [fromMarshall, Ill.] pitched all three games inthe tournament and only allowed one run.Our defense made many great plays, andwe only had one error in the tournament.”

The Pomeroys finished the USCAAsoftball season with a 31-12-1 record andwere 3-0 in the six-team double elimina-tion tournament. They defeated TexasWesleyan 6-1 and Huntingdon College,from Alabama, 3-0 to advance to thenational championship game.

Smelcer led the team in hitting, stealsand runs batted in this season. Her pitch-ing record was 23-7.

“We played a very challenging sched-ule in the regular season,” Neal said. “We

wanted to upgrade our schedule and playthe best teams we possibly could, and Ithink that paid off for us at the nationaltournament because we faced great teamsand played our best softball of the year.”

Senior Brooke Griffith from Lewis,near Terre Haute, played shortstop andsecond base. She played second base dur-ing her sophomore year, when thePomeroys earned their second title.

“It was a great way to finish my career,going out on top,” Griffith said. “Ithought we represented the college welland played our best softball in the tourna-ment. We were really prepared and weplayed well.”

The Pomeroys excel in the classroom,too. The team grade point average is 3.45on a 4.0 scale.

“We studied while traveling to andfrom games and in the hotels,” Griffithsaid. “We supported each other in acade-mics, too. It just goes to show that acade-mics are as important as sports.”

Griffith said the Pomeroys prayedbefore every game, asking God to sparethem from injuries and enable them toplay well in competition.

Three Pomeroys earned USCAA All-American Team honors this year. Theyare Smelcer; Amanda Royer, a freshmanfrom Terre Haute; and Melissa Shadow, ajunior from West Terre Haute.

The team is named for the late Provi-dence Sister Mary Joseph Pomeroy. †

Providence Sister BerniceDowns died on May 7 inKarcher Hall at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. She was 91.

The Mass of Christian Burialwas celebrated on May 10 in theChurch of the ImmaculateConception at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed inthe sisters’ cemetery.

The former Agnes EstelleDowns was born in Leonard-town, Md., on Oct. 6, 1910.

She entered the Congre-gation of the Sisters ofProvidence on Sept. 6, 1927,professed first vows on Feb.

26, 1930, and professed finalvows on Aug. 15, 1935.

Sister Bernice taught inschools staffed by the Sistersof Providence in Indiana,Illinois, Maryland, Massa-chusetts, North Carolina andthe District of Columbia.

In the archdiocese, SisterBernice taught at the formerSt. Anthony School inIndianapolis, now All SaintsSchool, in 1931-32.

Surviving are three sisters,Ginny Gray, Mary Annette Guyand Dorothy Hall, all ofLeonardtown, Md. †

Providence Sister Bernice Downstaught at schools in five states

Richard A. Nuttall, a long-time Cathedral High Schoolteacher, died suddenly onMay 7 at the private Catholichigh school in Indianapolis. Hewas 69.

Hundreds of students, par-ents and friends attended theMass of Christian Burial onMay 11 in the school’s RobertV. Welch Student ActivityCenter. Burial followed atCrown Hill Cemetery inIndianapolis.

Nuttall taught English atCathedral High School for 12years.

Prior to that, he was anIndianapolis Public Schoolsteacher and administrator for31 years. He was an assistantsuperintendent for elementaryschools when he retired fromIPS in 1989.

Cathedral faculty membersand students rememberedNuttall as a master teacher, won-derful mentor and tremendouslistener who always encouragedand inspired others to performto the best of their abilities.

A few weeks before he suf-fered a fatal heart attack in anoffice at the school, Nuttall hadbeen appointed the co-acade-mic dean for Cathedral’s regu-lar and academic programs.

Father Patrick Kelly,Cathedral’s principal, said inhis homily at the funeral thateveryone who knew Nuttall

was a better person because ofhis friendship and mentoring.

“His faith was the underpin-ning of everything he did inlife,” Father Kelly said. “Thenthere was his concern for all ofhis many ‘children’ [his stu-dents]. I think we have to learnfrom that concern—the effortand the energy that cost him.We, too, have to be moved tobe energetic and expend thatenergy to love other people.We have to help others asmuch as we can.”

A member of St. LawrenceParish in Indianapolis, Nuttallalso taught school administra-tion at Butler University inIndianapolis and was a coun-selor at Hoosier Boys State inTerre Haute.

Nuttall served his parish asa member of the St. LawrenceSchool board. He was a mem-ber of Phi Delta Kappa frater-nity, the National Council ofTeachers of English, theIndianapolis Maennerchor andthe St. Joseph Council of theKnights of Columbus.

An Army veteran, Nuttallgraduated from WorchesterState College in Worchester,Mass., and earned a master’sdegree at Butler University.

Surviving are his wife,Sarah “Sally” (Southworth)Nuttall; a brother, KevinNuttall; and a sister, GeraldineHeister. †

Father Kelly has been praised for his ability to maneu-ver through conflicts and find a solution that both sidescan accept.

Julian Peebles, former president of Cathedral HighSchool from 1989-1999, said Father Kelly has been aneffective leader because he is “a wonderful priest and aman of great intellect and great compassion.

“What is unique about him is that he is able to be aspiritual leader and an academic leader, and that is diffi-cult sometimes,” Peebles said.

Peebles recalled how well Father Kelly handled toughdisciplinary circumstances.

“Father was compassionate and that’s something Ialways admired,” Peebles said. “He always said, ‘I’m inthis for the kids.’”

Many times, people would ask why a certain studentwas allowed to stay, but Father Kelly always replied, “‘Ithink I can save this one,’ ” Peebles said. “He saved a lotof young souls in his years.”

After 18 years of guiding students, Father Kelly saidit’s time to retire.

David Worland, principal of Central Catholic JuniorSenior High School in Lafayette, will become the newprincipal this fall and Father Kelly will become theschool’s chancellor.

Still, chancellor wasn’t a role he went looking for,much like being a principal wasn’t on his list of things todo nearly two decades ago.

Assuming he’d retire and work as the chaplain and inthe religion department at the school, Father Kelly startedgetting used to the idea.

Then he was asked to be chancellor to help withfundraising and continue helping direct the school.

He said yes a little more quickly than he did when firstapproached about being a school principal in 1983.

“I’m the history of this place,” Father Kelly said. “Iknow things that can be helpful and I want to do all I can.”

Father Kelly’s route to working in high schools began

44 years ago after he was ordained a priest.It was a common practice at the time for priests to

teach high school religion, and he started teaching atFather Thomas Scecina Memorial High School in 1958.

In 1965, he began teaching religion at the formerSacred Heart School in Indianapolis, later renamedKennedy High School.

He lobbied to have the name stay the same, but hisbrother priests, all of whom were on the archdiocesanschool board at the time, decided to rename it, he said.

During his tenure at Sacred Heart, he became thesuperintendent before moving on to Chartrand HighSchool, now Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, wherehe was the founding superintendent.

In 1973, Cathedral High School, which was formerlyoperated by the Holy Cross Brothers, was scheduled to beclosed.

A group of laymen led by the late Robert V. Welchdecided they wanted to keep the school open and enlistedFather Kelly to help.

“I told [Welch] I would help anyway I could,” FatherKelly said.

Father Kelly’s willingness to help landed him in aposition he wasn’t sure about when Welch phoned himimmediately at the rectory.

“I was reading the newspaper and Bob [Welch] toldme to come to his house to talk about taking over theoperation of Cathedral,” Father Kelly said.

Soon, he became a board member and chaplain of thenewly formed Cathedral High School, but kept turningdown the role of principal despite the urgings of Welch.

Father Kelly remembers going to inform then-Arch-bishop George J. Biskup about his involvement in contin-uing Cathedral High School.

“I told him that there were a bunch of crazy laymenorganizing a way to continue operating the school and that Ihappened to be involved with them,” Father Kelly chuckled.“I told him they didn’t know how to run a Catholic high

school and I was going to give them guidance.”However, it would be 12 years before Father Kelly

would agree to become principal of Cathedral HighSchool.

Dealing with teen-agers through the years has showedFather Kelly that society plays a heavy influence in stu-dents’ responses and attitudes.

Students are more materialistic because society ismaterialistic and kids have more than kids did when hewas growing up, he said.

Yet, students still care about others despite the materi-alism, he said, citing several service projects students atCathedral organize each year.

“They have a deep spirituality,” Father Kelly said.Father Kelly believes the decrease of priests and reli-

gious in Catholic schools has impacted vocations.“They don’t see these models on a daily basis,” Father

Kelly said. “It used to be that as a priest I handed out thereport cards at my parish school. If a priest isn’t seen, hecan’t be imitated.”

Father Kelly realizes that having a priest visit theparish school regularly can be impossible with the bur-dens they are already dealing with by running a parishand, in some cases, more than one parish.

He also said that many young men are deterred bycelibacy in the priesthood because society doesn’t appre-ciate or promote it.

“You don’t hear anymore, ‘I’ll do it for God,’ ” hesaid.

As he reflects on his years at Cathedral, Father Kellysaid his motto in life came from his mother.

When Father Kelly was 16, he was struck by howmuch work his mother did as a nurse and taking care of alarge extended family.

One day he asked her how she did it.“She told me, ‘I just keep on keeping on,’ ” Father

Kelly said. “You have to go with the flow. Like mymother said, you have to keep on keeping on.” †

The newest principal of Cathedral High School inIndianapolis wants people to know his priorities.

David Worland will becomeprincipal this fall, taking over forFather Patrick Kelly, who willbecome the school’s chancellor.

Worland’s goals focus on Christand the students he will be serving.

“I have a sincere and deep desireto help students and I plan to do mybest in the interest of students,”Worland said. “I want to reflect themission of the school and centeraround Christ and around the stu-dents. If I fall short, I hope to get

back quickly to this focus because when you focus onChrist and the students everything becomes clear.”

Worland brings an extensive background in Catholiceducation to the school.

For the past 12 years, he has been principal at CentralCatholic Junior Senior High School in Lafayette, Ind. Hebegan a teaching career there in 1979 before moving toWashington Catholic High School in Washington, Ind.,where he taught and coached. He moved on to SouthDearborn High School before returning to Lafayette asassistant principal and later principal.

He also has held positions as athletic director andboys’ basketball coach.

Cathedral’s mission, standards and successes.While happy at Lafayette, also his hometown, Worland

applied for the principal’s job at Cathedral because of theschool’s outstanding reputation.

At Lafayette, Worland said he knew students well andhe wants to continue that personal relationship with stu-dents at Cathedral.

“That’s what I am here for,” he said.He plans to visit the cafeteria at lunchtime to talk to

students and let them get to know him.While Father Kelly will still be active at the school as

the chancellor, Worland wants to do all that he can toencourage vocations to the priesthood and keep aCatholic identity at the school.

A past president of the Serra Club in Lafayette, anorganization that promotes vocations, Worland said hewants to make sure that vocations are fostered andencouraged.

That could take the form of prayers for vocations orhelping campus ministers talk to students who may feel adesire to enter the priesthood or religious life.

From an administrative standpoint, Worland said oneof his strengths is working with faculty and administra-tors as a team and being able to bring together the dif-ferent components it takes to make a high school a suc-cess.

He also wants to continue the tradition of prayer andservice at Cathedral for all students.

“We have to remember that everything centers aroundprayer,” Worland said. †
