I am delighted to host this celebration of enterprise and welcome enterprising people from across the UK, and the world, who have made a difference through teaching enterprise skills or using their newly learned enterprise skills to fulfil their entrepreneurial ambitions.

My own life has involved a mix of business, not for profits, and both together, and I will make no apology for seeking to bring both sides together. Increasingly, the worlds of social and charitable action and entrepreneurship are converging and it’s inspiring to welcome so many individuals today that are not only achieving tremendous success in their field of enterprise, but are also making time to give back, whether that’s through mentoring, championing a cause, ensuring their business delivers for their employees as well as themselves, or helping to bring enterprise skills to those who could benefit the most. All are doing their part to encourage better and more responsible businesses.

Congratulations to today’s award winners and everyone who is making a difference in the world of enterprise, which holds the key to achieving sustainable change for good across today’s global community.

The Lord Wei of ShoreditchHouse of Lords

Thank you for joining us today to celebrate and reward the very best in Enterprise Learning and Skills in the UK and beyond. We are proud to be working with a range of fantastic partners making sure that enterprise and entrepreneurship is at the heart of our global economic development and growth.

This year has seen us working with the farming community in the UK to help increase their business resilience through mentoring support and the creation of a Farming Resilience Tool Kit. This builds on the Get Mentoring project and provides a template for other sector specific mentoring projects. We have also ventured outside of the UK, travelling to Malaysia to see how enterprise and innovation in Higher Education is leading the way in terms of global enterprise and entrepreneurship taking IOEE into a global marketplace.

Everyone being recognised today is contributing in their own way to the growth and sustainability of the small and micro business sector forming the lifeblood of our growing global economy.

We are proud to be part of this celebration of enterprise and hope that you leave today’s event inspired to continue to do what you can to ensure all small and micro businesses have the right enterprising skills and knowledge to start, survive and thrive.

Enterprising IOEE MemberHak Salih

Hak Salih is an inspiring example of how entrepreneurial experience and a willingness to share this with others can be a force for good for small businesses. After graduating, Hak set up a shop with a friend. The venture ended in the toughest of circumstances when it was damaged in the Bishopgate bomb of ‘93. Hak’s determination led him to then go on to have a long and successful career in the stock market. Taking time out in 2012, he wanted to give something back and spotted the Get Mentoring training. He has since mentored many small businesses met via Meet A Mentor or the IOEE community, on an entirely voluntarily basis and has become an invaluable source of support.

Enterprising Learning ProductSureTrax

SureTrax have designed an innovative new programme which helps learners understand how to engage with employers with confidence and better achieve their career goals. The programme helps learners become their own research, employer engagement and sales team, and gives them ownership for contacting employers in a confident and professional manner. The ‘activity and action programme’ which includes modules such as, ‘Selling Yourself in the Employment Market’, and ‘Preparation for Life & Work’, provides young people with a clear action plan enabling them to pursue work, education and self employment opportunities. The product has already reached 300 learners and has been adopted by many colleges and training organisations.

Enterprise Learning ProviderThe Manchester College

The Manchester College has won this award for their commitment and drive in working in partnership with SFEDI Awards to pioneer programmes to take enterprise learning into the prison environment. Their objective is to provide a structured progression journey for individuals who are interested in exploring and progressing self employment. Their work in this area is underpinned by their belief that enabling self employment will reduce the rates of reoffending. SFEDI Awards has worked with the team closely and been impressed by their passion for developing programmes that will both teach skills and build confidence amongst a community where self employment can provide a positive and sustainable future.

Enterprise EducatorProfessor Andy Penaluna

Andy Penaluna is Professor of Creative Entrepreneurship at the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). He has worked in FE and HE for over 30 years and first introduced enterprise into the curriculum in 1987. For the past four years he has helped to develop and contribute to teacher education; his university has the UK’s first fully validated PGCE / PCET module in entrepreneurship education. As a designer and entrepreneur who moved into teaching, Andy teaches both creativity for businesses and business for creatives. Andy now works closely with Welsh and UK Governments and also advises the European Commission and the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development on enterprise education policy.

For 10 years he has had a column in Real Business magazine and regularly contributes to The Daily Telegraph. John has gained a reputation as a paternalistic employer and runs a ‘Dream Come True’ programme for staff, which has paid for eye operations and reunited families. It is, he says, “blindingly obvious” that if you treat people well, they will do a good job. The company has also recently set up a training school for young offenders in Liverpool. In 2004 he was awarded the CBE in the Birthday Honours List for Services to the Retail Sector.

International Lifetime Achievment AwardTan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr Lim Kok Wing Founder and President of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology

With campuses in Asia, Africa and the UK, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology is a pioneering institute that UNESCO has called a New Model University.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr Lim Kok Wing has received accolades from around the world in acknowledgement of his extraordinary contribution to innovation and education. In 2010 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award with the title of ‘Malaysia’s Father of Creativity and Innovation’ from the Malaysian Government.

Early in his career he saw enormous value in Malaysian talent and left a high-flying career in a multinational advertising company to build a foundation to grow local talent. He established Wings Creative Consultants, an agency focussed on developing the creative thinking and capabilities of Malaysian students. He made it possible for them to attain diplomas in disciplines such as art direction, interior design, marketing and public relations that they would otherwise have had to leave Malaysia to study. What made them particularly useful to industry was the mandatory study of computer software.

Within three years this home grown talent was enabling businesses to take advantage of the commercial opportunities of the internet and e-commerce, which made a huge difference to the competitive capabilities of the Malaysian economy. Today many of those early graduates hold key positions in industry and run businesses of their own.

What began as a small institute with 300 local students in 1992 has now grown into a global university with campuses in six countries in three continents. Limkokwing University of Creative Technology created a new vision for education that aims to build a talent base equipped to meet the challenges of this new century. In 2007, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology was conferred a special award by the Ministry of Higher Education for its innovative approach and dedication to globalising Malaysian education.
