EXECUTIVE SUMM RY
This report consists of two parts: the organizational part exploring the different dimensions of
the work experience attained from the internship opportunity at Citibank, N.A., Bangladesh
and a research part revolving the concept of Business Process Reengineering.
Citigroup is the prominent global financial services company with some 200 million
customer accounts in more than 100 countries. Citibank NA. is a descendant of City Bank of
New York which traces back to 1812. The City Bank of New York has changed successively
to First National City Bank in 1968 and to Citibank, NA., in 1976. Citibank N.A. commenced
in Bangladesh during 1987, with the opening of a representative office. Citibank N.A. opened
its first full-service branch in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on June 24, 1995.
With a mission to work tirelessly in creating the best outcomes for their clients and customers
with customers with financial solutions that are simple, creative and responsible they base
their performance on common purpose, responsible finance, ingenuity and leadership. The
entire organization can be viewed as a three-tier entity encompassing the customers with the
first one being closest. Corporate Bank, Global Transaction Services (GTS), Treasury Sales
and Trading Financial Institutions and some other departments comprise the whole of
Citibank, N.A., Bangladesh. as of now the company is in a good position but with strong
competition in the market arising from both foreign and local banks.
Cash management operations department in Citibank, N.A. deals with the backend part of the
bank. The work of department unit involves a lot of data entries. Every transaction needs to
be recorded, calculations need to be made and all accounts need to be updated. This is a
tedious process which needs to be done every day. Citibank, N. A. continuously aims to find
innovative ways for a systematic process to makes the transaction and data management

faster through business process re-engineering. Business process re-engineering (BPR) is
defined as the search for and the implementation of radical change in business process to
achieve breakthrough results. Since the emergence of BPR a large number of software tools
have emerged to help BPR efforts. BPR using information technology (IT) helps to improve
the performance of the employees in Citibank, N.A. After analysing it was found out that the
employees of Citibank, N.A, are not satisfied with their current IT System. They believe that
their current IT system does not enable them to work independently and therefore an
improvement is necessary in current IT system. These findings show that there is a positive
effect of BPR implementation using IT on the performance of the employees in Citibank,
N.A.
