 Charming Frills

By Usha Shah www.shuttlecreations.blogspot.com

Long picots combined with the Catherine Wheel join can be used as a filler,

multi-tiered, or as a frill/fringe. All these effects are seen in their full glory in this

Charming Frills pendant, especially when contrasting colors are used. The long picots

move from an airy to a denser frill by doubling in successive rows.

Materials : Two shuttles, Anchor size 20 cotton or metallic thread in two contrast

shades, one pendant hook, 7mm picot gauge.

Anchor 20 is closer to a Lizbeth 10.

Adjust picot measurement accordingly.

Dimensions : 5cm X 5cm

Techniques used : Thrown/Floating Ring, Alligator Join, Catherine Wheel Join,

Split Chain, Picot Join

Abbreviations :

SH1- Shuttle1 with Orange Thread SH2 - Shuttle2 with Purple Thread

R - Ring - - Picot

For ease of presentation, I used the notation ‘lp_cwj’ to refer to the 7mm long picot followed by a Catherine Wheel join.

Following is a short description and pictorial showing how to make it.

How to make a lp_cwj (combination of Long Picot and Catherine Wheel Join) :

Leave SH1(Core Thread) above the long picot. Pull SH2(Working Thread) through picot from under SH1 forming a loop.

(Pic 1) The SH1 thread is now encapsulated between the SH2 and loop. Pass the SH2 through the loop. Pull the thread

back until the loop pops through.(Pic 2)

Pull up the thread which comes from last double stitch to make 7mm long picot. Hold this loop in pinch before tightening

it as first half stitch.(The best way is to leave the picot on the gauge) Put SH2 from the other loop which will form second

half stitch. The core thread slides inside the join made. (Pic 3,4)

Pattern with Step by Step Working Pics :

Rounds 1-3 are worked in clockwise direction; round 4 moves from left to right and Round 5 moves from right to left,

when seen from the front.

Join the shuttle threads together.

Round 1 Start with SH1

R: 3-3-6 clr. DNRW.

Round 2

Split Ch (SH1): 5 (See Pic 7) SLT, RW.

Leave a mock vsp before starting next round and turn work

Round 4

Continue with SH1. The chain in this row starts with outward facing stitches, then turns inwards, joining to Round 3 with Picot Joins, and ending with a Split Ch with outward stitches. (See pIc 8)

Ch: 5, [Picot Join, 1]x16 SS Turn work (See Pic 9)

Split Ch (SH2): 5 (See Pic 10) DNRW, SLT, SS

Please Note: The back side view shows tiny orange bars where the Round 4 joins were made (See pic 11).

In the next round, we will be making the joins through these bars. Insert a crochet hook through the orange bar from

behind, pull up a loop (See Pic 12) and make the lp_cwj as per pattern below.
