ANNUAL SHOW
20th and 21st JULY
2019 CAMELLIA SEASON
Sitting under this beautiful Camellia Sasanqua ‘Rosea’ is the
perfect way to enjoy the sunshine on a winter afternoon. We
particularly enjoy the pink carpet of petals which means no
mowing for a month. We have had a few showers of rain
knocking the blooms off but there are always many more to
take their place.
‘The Camellia is
The queen of the
Winter Flowers ’

JULY 5TH 2019
Again we had good attendance at the June meeting – 29 members.
William gave us his talk about benching and showing of blooms. Which
leads me to again ask everyone who can, to bring as many flowers as
possible to both our shows.
The monthly bloom competition had more blooms in June but I feel the
numbers are still down on previous years at this time. We still have lots of
buds on plants but they seem very slow to open. Perhaps we will see
many more blooms at shows later in the year than we have in the past,
that is my hope.
Judging school is finished for the year and our small group will be missing
our fortnightly fun, talks and education. We are all in debt to William for
taking the time to guide us on the way to becoming judges. I hope at least
some of us will live up to his expectations.
We ( the committee) have been trying to cover all bases for the upcoming
Shows but still need everybody to help for the set up and on the day of the
shows.
See you all at the SHOW with lots of blooms.
Regards Don

We need some helpers at 12pm, each month, to set up the the tables, sections and
cards for the Bloom Competition. The sooner it’s set up the sooner you can bench
your blooms. Thank you to those who have been doing this, it’s greatly appreciated.
We also need scribes and bloom handlers for each month as Helen has done this for
each Bloom comp so far this year and we still need JUDGES for September and
October.
JUDGES FOR THE MONTHLY BLOOM COMP 2019. Thank you so much to:
MARCH: William APRIL: Debby MAY: Tina JUNE: Jim
AUGUST: Lorraine SEPTEMBER: OCTOBER:
We need Judges for September and October. Please let us know if you can fill these months.
GUEST SPEAKERS

SHOW TIMELINE
The flyers have all been distributed thanks to our members. We really need the word to get out
there. We also have Shop window Posters and would like these to be displayed around the
district, so please ask your local garden centre or favourite shop if they will display one.
It’s also time to think about what jobs you’re able to do at the ANNUAL SHOW. We always need all
hands on deck for SHOW SETUP on the Thursday before the show. We have arranged for the
hired tables to be set up for us which will make our work much easier. Please let the committee
know what jobs you can do. All offers of help will be gladly accepted.
All the show timeline items are slowly being ticked off by the committee and we are keeping up
with each month.
The Champion cetificates have been updated and printed. New ribbons, sashes and medals have
arrived, ribbon cards have been printed, cut and prepared. Prizes have been perchased and
Sandy and Judy will be organising the winners table. Thanks so much to you both.
If you usually do a job at the show and are willing to do it again this year, PLEASE put your name
on the JOBS AT THE SHOW register if you havn’t already. It is very important that we have all jobs
filled by the day of the show!
NOTE: There is a change in the Annual schedule. Section 601 Float Bowl, can now be any number
of blooms but must be floating. Section 602 Decorative Display of Camellias, now the only rule is
to let your imagination run free. Both sections will continue to be judged by popular choice during
Saturday afternoon with votes counted and ribbons awarded by the end of the day.

Treasurer’s Report Les tabled a financial statement as at 15 June 2019, showing the balances in our Investment Accounts and our Everyday (Operating Account). Our only income over the last month has come from late payment of membership subscriptions and Neutrog winter orders. Major expenditures in the period May 2019 included Camellias Australia affiliation dues - $1,144.00; printing of Show Flyers, Posters and Show Schedules - $180.00 and preparation of Show Ribbons and Sashes - $950.00. Anticipated expenditures for June are an advance of $300.00 to Lola Flanagan for the Kitchen and Food for morning/afternoon teas and lunches at the Camellia Show in July and the final payment for the hire of the tables (South Coast Party Hire) for the show - $700.00. Moved by Les Dewhurst, seconded by William Walker, carried.
General Business Neutrog orders have to be in today. 1 The Ross book , ‘From the Ground Up’, is still available to purchase. 2 We need plenty of blooms at both shows.

3 Volunteers are needed for the show – on setting up the TIGS hall at 10.00 am on Thursday, 18 July 2019, and on Saturday after the show opens and Sunday for various help on the entry table or helping Lola and Joanne with morning and afternoon teas and lunch on the Sunday. Thank you to those members who have already put their names on the two cardboard sheets Jean has prepared.
4 Don showed members a book that has been written by Dr George Ocel and Anthony S Curry, titled ‘Camellia – Works in Progress’. Jenny spoke to members about the book . This large book is historically and scientifically interesting in the authors’ quest to find the elusive Camellia species and follows on just three years after their book, ‘In Pursuit of Hidden Camellias’, published in 2015. This book is also an exciting read on their adventures in the steaming jungles of Laos. The book is in A4 size and in full colour, with 457 pages of glossy photos and describes some 26 new Camellia species. It also contains 1 Tale, 5 Figures and 12 information Boxes. The retail price is $150.00 plus postage. Bulk orders (more than 5) 20% discount. Limited print edition of 100. Please let our Treasurer, Les, know if you wish to order one.
5 Phil Laird asked about the Conference in Japan next year. The details have not yet been released. We will try to find out more information on this.
6 Kevin asked how many people were going to the National Congress in Young this year. Kevin said some lovely gardens will also be included in the itinerary. Details of the Congress are in the Camellia News. If you are booking, please ring the motel and mention that you are with the Camellia Society as they were to hold some rooms.
7 The Neutrog orders will be sent away next week.
Lucky Door Prize Jim Powell was the lucky recipient of the first Bunnings voucher and Tina Hamer received the second voucher.
Jim’s Problem Corner 1 Christine’s Dad would like to know why his Bromiliads are not flowering. Possibly too much water and they also like semi-shade. Sprinkle some blood and bone in the top to feed them.
2 Judy said that some of the buds on her camellias are brown. Jim said to leave them and they will eventually fall off if they are no good. Judy also asked if Jim sang to his Camellias, but he replied that he didn’t as the camellias don’t like his singing. Don added that some of his camellias also have brown buds at times, but he does not remove these and they eventually flower satisfactorily.
3 Kevin and William will be grafting camellias very soon, so if anyone wants a particular one, please let them know and they will graft one if they are able.

The meeting closed at 1.35 pm. The next monthly meeting will be held on Saturday, 17 August 2019, at Bulli Uniting Church. Guest Speaker William gave a most interesting talk on ‘Preparing for the Show’. This talk was a good reminder to us of the importance of preparing our blooms and cards and boxes, etc in readiness for the July Show and the Reticulata Show, to hopefully save ourselves time when we are benching and also stress when picking and preparing the blooms for show. Thank you William for your very helpful talk. Jean GrovesMinute Secretary

Don and I recently celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary and were presented with this
beautiful cake made by our Daughter-in-law. As you can see she made these glorious Camellias
modeled on our Debutante blooms, from last months cover. They are stunning replicas of the real
blooms and leaves and I’m sure all you Camellia lovers can see that! If anyone is interested in
ordering a cake or learning biscuit decorating, from her, in the Shoalhaven – Illawarra area she
can be contacted at Angela [email protected]
THOUGHTS – only slightly Camellia oriented……
It’s a wet Sunday, a rarity these days, so I decided this was a good opportunity to attach ribbons
to cards for the upcoming shows.
I don’t find this kind of work very onerous or boring because it takes very little mental or physical
effort but it makes me feel like I’m achieving something. For the same reason I like weeding.
Anyway it gives me time to think and hark back to my school days when I often heard the term
‘’Works well under supervision’’ applied to me. How wrong they were --- here I am working totally
alone and doing an excellent job!
Which also reminds me of something my Mum used to say ‘’ Self praise is no recommendation’’
DRD.
