The HOTTEST PARTY of the summer! Party on the Patio is one of the ways the Chamber honors its members. This membership appreciation event, held annually each July, began in 2007 to celebrate our members and the “casualness” of summer. Different from any other event hosted by the Chamber, Party on the Patio is just for fun. At many of our events we rely on our member volunteers to assist with registration, set up or even the planning of the event. At Party on the Patio, volunteers just need to have a good time – it is the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Staff that will be your host for this event. Laughlin graduated from a local Catholic High School and received a BS Degree in Biology from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. After graduating from college, he joined the Texas National Guard. After serving six months of active duty, boot camp in Fort Campbell

Kentucky, MOS training at Fort Sill Oklahoma and Jump School at Fort Benning, Georgia, Rick returned to Houston Texas for his first professional job with the Texas Water Quality Board. He served as a Biologist inspecting the water effluent of various city sewage plants and the water discharges from businesses in the Houston Area. After a couple of years, he decided to get into sales and went to work for a chemical distribution company selling raw materials to paint and rubber manufacturers in Houston and the surrounding cities.

After about five years of selling chemicals, Laughlin had the opportunity to become part owner in a Ben Franklin Variety Store in Bay City, Texas. He owned three stores but after many years of success Wal-Mart moved into the cities where they were located and they were eventually forced to close their operations.

Laughlin then decided to pursue a career of selling investment products. He worked for Morgan Stanley as a financial advisor in one of their Houston offices and then moved to a bank in El Campo, TX working in the investment department. After five years in the financial business, Laughlin developed a voice problem and could no longer talk. He was forced to give up the career as a financial advisor since it is hard to communicate over the telephone when you cannot talk and a great deal of his business was conducted by phone.

Needing an income and not being able to talk, Rick and his wife decided to go into business again. After considering a wide range of businesses, franchises opportunities and visiting locations all over Texas we decided on the sign business. After researching all of the various sign franchises available, they decided on purchasing a Sign-A-Rama Sign shop franchise. Rick did not want to give up a small town lifestyle and their oldest daughter who lived in Friendswood suggested they check out the area. The Laughlins found Pearland to be large enough to do business and yet still had the small town atmosphere they wanted so they decided to locate the shop in Pearland. In 2004, they moved to Pearland, Texas with no voice and a dream. The Laughlin’s are in their ninth year of providing signs and sign related products to businesses and individuals in the Pearland, Alvin and Friendswood areas and look forward to many more years of serving the local business community.

Rick met Phyllis Trochta while working in Houston and at the age of 28 decided to get married. They have two wonderful daughters and two remarkable son-in-laws all pursuing careers in their chosen fields. They also have a three year old grandson and a granddaughter on the way. Over the years Rick has enjoyed hobbies including water skiing, golf, yardwork, umpiring little league games, playing the guitar and motorcycle riding. Rick professes that he was never good enough at any of his hobbies to quit his day job.
