This course is designed as well to help students acquire and apply argumentative techniques based on logical and critical thinking to scientific debate, and to appreciate the power of ideas in science and technology that often affect and change people's lives and the world. Have a Learning Centered AttitudeLearning a language, reading, and writing require you to be engaged and actively participating. Inthis class, you will need to work hard - both in class and outside of class. Having a learnercentered attitude means you that you don't get discouraged when you are confused or when youstruggle because confusion, struggling, making mistakes - these are all important parts oflearning. Keep going. Keep trying. Get help when you need it. You will learn so much. Believethat you can do it because you can! Come to class with an open mind ready to learn and ready toshare your ideas and teach others.

In-class debate

As you can see from the graphon the left, class participationis a significant part of youroverall grade. Our in-classdebate, quizzes, and homeworkare also important. Your finalpresentation will be ademonstration of all of the workyou've done throughout theclass together. Keep all papersorganized and in a folder orbinder, so you have somethingyou can refer back to onceclass is over.

Grading Explained

In-class compositions must be at least 100-125 words for assignments and can be written ortyped. Grading and Late Homework: All grades will be given in points/percents or letter grades. I willgive you a grade report at midway and before the last day (and whenever you ask!) so you knowhow you’re doing in the class. Ask me if you have any questions or worries. If you find a mistake orthink I graded something incorrectly, tell me immediately. I will not change grades after the end ofthe class. If you are absent, all homework you miss is still due on the day I requested it. You mustsend it via a friend or send it BY EMAIL.

Attendance Policy Students who miss a total of 4 classes will besubject to dismissal from the program perHomeland Security/Immigration policy. It is

recommended thatstudents be absent nomore than 2 times perclass. No excusedabsences except theIEPP LA trip. If studentsare sick, please informteachers.

Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes, among otherthings, (1) sharing information during anexam/quiz, (2) copying another student’s exam orhomework, (3) copying information, ideas,thoughts and words from other sources andclaiming that it is your original work. This is calledplagiarism. It is considered one of the worstforms of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty of any form is notacceptable. Students caught cheating on examsor quizzes or reading/writing assignments willreceive a score of zero on the assignment thefirst time (1st offense) and a course grade of “F,”reported the Vice President of Instruction, andbeing dropped from the class the second time(2nd offense)
