June 24 ~ Solemnity of the

Nativity of St. John the Baptist

From his birth, John the Baptist was “a light to the nations” and one who grew strong in God’s spirit. While John knew he was not the Messiah, he also knew that his role was to prepare people’s hearts for the coming of Christ. In what ways are you, like John the Baptist, “a light for the nations” leading others to Christ? Who are the people in your life that need to be pointed toward Christ?

From the Pastor

Peace be with you. Here are many of the things the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops worked on last week in Florida. Feel free to speak with me or email me if you have any opinions on these things. You might as well take advantage of the fact that your pastor is a bishop, and for my part, I very much appreciate that I have your opinions to listen to. New Immigration Issues: The Conference is very concerned about new immigration issues arising from the government’s new zero tolerance stance. Two basic human rights issues have emerged: the first is that women fleeing domestic violence are being denied asylum status and the second is that children are being separated from their parents at the border and being held in holding places that are expanding rapidly. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, the Conference President, issued a letter with our concerns which you can find on line here: http://www.usccb.org/news/2018/18-098.cfm. Updating the Charter for the Protection of Minors: The Bishops in the United States are very concerned with any complacency among Catholics in our need to protect minors. A regularly scheduled update was made to the Charter for the Protection of Minors. Updating the USCCB Statement concerning Responsible Citizenship: The world of politics has changed since the last time the bishops put out a statement about responsible citizenship especially with regard to elections. Therefore it was agreed that the USCCB will be begin to prepare now for the 2020 election so that a relevant letter and videos to guide voters will be ready on time. Statement of Racism: A committee is preparing a statement on racism for the challenges of today. At the meeting, we heard a powerful testimony by a civil rights lawyer named Bryan Stevenson. It is my hope that an equally powerful statement relevant to today’s racial situation will be issued soon. Preparation for the Synod on Youth: Pope Francis is holding a worldwide Synod of Bishops to discuss the Church and young people in October. Prior to convening the bishops, he invited young people from all over the world to a listening session at the Vatican. The USCCB sent three young people to that meeting and they reported on it. I was impressed with their presentation to us and hope the bishops appointed to the Synod in October were listening carefully. These are the things that grabbed my attention the most at the Spring meeting. If you have thoughts or concerns on these issues, look up the discussion or watch the discussions on line for further information and if you want drop me an email ([email protected]). Blessings on you and your families, Bishop Mark
