The Christmas decorations in the streets of Balranald and Euston have added colour and sparkle to the streets and have created Christmas cheer and positive comments from visitors and residents. Council purchased 200 colourful weather proof boxes with over 900 metres of ribbon to dress up the town and decorate a number of the large trees in the CBD of
Balranald. Lights were also purchased with many trees along the main street being adorned as well as on the eaves of the businesses. The boxes came flat-packed and were put together and wrapped with the ribbon by Council staff and volunteers.
As part of our “Christmas Cheer” campaign, Council
is awarding $500 in local business vouchers to the best decorated home and $500 credit towards rates or water for the best dressed business in the Shire.
Two market days have also been promoted to support local retailers and encourage residents to buy local.

The Balranald Discovery Centre topped off a great year by receiving a Silver Award at the NSW Tourism Awards following the Bronze received at the Inland NSW Tourism Awards. With visitors walk-in figures showing a marked increase from previous years and high satisfaction levels from visitors, 2015 has been a wonderful year with plans underway for a fabulous 2016!
Local tour operator Outback Geo Adventures also had a remarkable year receiving a Gold award at the Inland NSW Tourism Awards and Bronze at the NSW Tourism Awards.
With four Tourism Awards in one year and a new Tourism Strategy, tourism in the Shire is looking bright for 2016 !

Christmas is a special time of the year – it is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, a time which brings out the best in our community and as Mayor of Balranald Shire Council I extend to residents and visitors alike my best wishes for the Festive Season. Christmas always heralds a time for quiet introspection, to reminisce over where we have been and what we have accomplished during the preceding year. It is also a time for reflection, contemplation and of establishing aspirations and goals for the year to come. If we are each allowed a Christmas wish, mine is that we are able to work in partnership with our community as we strive to achieve a community where individual differences are valued, voices heard and contributions meaningful. Every Christmas is nicer than the previous one because all of our staff and volunteers make the Shire a better place. To those of you travelling over the festive season, take extra care on the roads, and arrive at your destination safely. On behalf of the Councillors and staff of Balranald Shire Council, I would like to wish you and your family a safe, peaceful and Merry Christmas, and a prosperous and safe New Year. Mayor, Leigh Byron

Balranald Shire’s Ordinary Council Meeting for December was held at the Euston Recreation Reserve on Tuesday 15 December.
All Euston residents were invited to attend and see our Councillors in action, determining issues that affect our Shire. Prior to the Council meeting, Euston residents were invited to a BBQ lunch and refreshments. After lunch students from Euston Public School sang Christmas carols to all present, wishing them a very Merry Christmas. Euston residents joined with Councillors and staff to observe the December meeting and gained an understanding of how council meetings operate.
