sOlutiOn: seismicVictaulic couplings allow for full engagement of the housing keys into grooves around the pipe circumference providing significant pressure restraint and end load capability to withstand pipe movement from internal and external sources. For example, piping systems in earthquake-prone areas can be exposed to forces and deflections beyond normal static conditions. These seismic forces can cause extensive damage when piping systems cannot accommodate these changes. Victaulic components can be used to accommodate seismic forces in the following piping system conditions:
• Code-regulated systems with adequate earthquake bracing
• Unregulated systems with little or no earthquake bracing
• Seismic joint connections between independently-moving sections

Noise carried through piping systems is a design challenge as requirements for mechanical rooms are constantly evolving.
Noise attenuation characteristics are inherent in the design of the grooved system. The unique coupling construction enables the gasket to seal against the pipe, while the ductile iron housing provides both space for the elastomeric material to flex and containment to prevent overstretching. The ductile iron also possesses vibration dampening qualities to absorb sound.
When placed in a formation of three couplings linked near to each other in close proximity to the source of vibration, Victaulic mechanical pipe systems deliver unsurpassed vibration isolation and sound attenuation characteristics. “Victaulic couplings dampened the overall vibration amplitude by 80 – 90%.” (as determined by SSA Acoustics in Seattle, Washington).

albeRici headquaRteRs, the GReenest buildinG in the wORld
National construction leader, Alberici, built its new headquarters in Overland, Missouri on a 1�-month fast-track design/build schedule that was aggressively met by Corrigan Company, a leading full-service mechanical contractor in St. Louis, Missouri. To meet this schedule, Corrigan and Alberici sought an innovative grooved piping solution for the building’s unique underfloor HVAC system and selected Victaulic to efficiently support the chilled and hot water systems for the building’s air distribution.
After the project’s completion in early 2005, the USGBC designated the building as the greenest building in the world because Alberici was able to accumulate more points under the LEED rating system than any other building in history.
The ambitious Alberici headquarters is 110,000 gross sq. ft, and two stories tall. The 18" raised floor system is located throughout the entire building except for the restrooms and kitchen. The Victaulic grooved system fit Alberici’s intent for indoor air quality during construction, indirectly affecting the LEED certification. In addition, the Victaulic grooved piping system reduced on-site material waste and handling due to pre-cut pipe lengths.
sOlutiOn: sustainabilityArchitects and engineers involved in environmental design will find a sustainability solution in specifying Victaulic. Victaulic ductile iron products are manufactured from 90% recycled scrap metal, and Victaulic piping systems contribute to LEED-accredited sustainability solutions.
