    Question 1:

    a. Study Figure 1A which shows the tourist arrivals from various regions toSingapore.

    Describe and account for the trend in tourist arrivals from Asia and Europe intoSingapore. [5]

    Description of the trend Generally increasing number of tourists arriving from Asia, from 4918.8 thousand

    in 1994 to 5201.1 thousand in 1997, with a sudden decline to 4221.8 thousandin 1998,

    Number of European tourists have fallen from1016.7 thousands in 1994 to 982.7thousand in 1998

    Reasons:

    Cheaper to travel within the region Singapore is located within Asia, therefore,Asians have to travel shorter distances cheaper air fares

    Cheaper to travel within region Entry of a variety of budget carriers, e.g. TigerAirways, Jetstar and Air Asia which offer cheaper ticket prices to and from manyAsian cities

    Asians may find that Singapore is a nearby and convenient stopover for a shortholiday with the family closer proximity to their own countries

    Language is a lesser barrier since Singapore is a hybrid of different Asian races.90% of the population is literate and able to speak English

    Question 2:

    Figure 2A below shows the visitor arrivals to Singapore between 1997 to 2007 from

    Japan and USA.

    General Trend: Visitor arrivals to Singapore both fell for Japan and USA between1997 and 2007. Visitors arrivals to Singapore from USA is quite constantthroughout the year but visitor arrivals from Japan decline sharply.

    Between 1997 and 1998, visitor arrivals for Japan fell sharply as compared toUSA, which only experienced a slight fall. Visitor arrivals from Japan fell by 250000 while visitor arrivals for USA only fell by about 50 000.

    Between 2000 and 2003, visitor arrivals for both countries fell, with Japan fallingmuch faster than USA. Japan fell by 500 000 while USA fell by 50000 visitors.

    Between 2004 and 2005, visitor arrivals fell slightly for both countries. Japan fell

    by 100 000 visitors and USA fell by about 50 000 visitors.

    b. With reference to examples, explain how the following may help a country attractmore tourists and contribute to the growth of the tourism industry may affecttourism industry- Construction of an Integrated Resort;- Increase in fuel prices;-

    Open skies agreements between countries allow more airlines to fly to morecountries opening new routes and offering new destination

    E.g. Star Alliance collaboration between carriers such as Singapore Airlines,

    Air China, Asiana Airlines opened up new routes for many passengersOR

    Liberalisation of aviation policies also led to the formation of new airlines or thecreation of subsidiaries of major airlines

    E.g. Silk Air and Dragon air (Hong Kong). These budget airlines usually offermore affordable air tickets thus travelling to certain countries within the regionbecome more affordable.

    Integrated resort will attract more visitors from different countries by offering avariety of activities & entertainment programmes to offer different experiences.

    E.g. Singapore Sands IR in Singapore offers a variety of activities &experiences, e.g. the casino, entertainment programmes like Universal Studio

    will attract many tourists variety of experiences.

    Increase in fuel prices discourage people from travelling as this also means aincreased in ticket prices expensive to travel

    E.g. In 2008, increase in fuel prices resulted in a drop in tourist numbers to &from countries such as Singapore due to more expensive ticket prices
