Greetings,Spring has sprung and the riding is wonderful! As youread in the monthly agenda, if you couldn’t have madethis month’s chapter meeting, CA-2S had a whole lotgoing on in March/April. And the beat goes on. Youstill have time to join in because there is plenty to do inMay and throughout the coming months. If it has beenawhile since you have played with us you’re missingout on a whole lot of FUN! The rides have increased innumbers, most of the time breaking up into two groups.

CA-2S has a special going on in May. Rocky, Roger, and hopefully all of us are trying to support safety allthe time, despite my bonehead move after a fellow riderwent down; riding my trike a few hundred yards to getit off the road without a helmet. And yes, I have thewing nut, simply mindless on my part.

Back to the special for May. Mark your calendar forMay 12th. Doc Wong is once again having a First AidCPR class for motorcyclist. This will be a certificationclass. This May 12th class will be available for FREEwith the past support our participants of CA-2S haveshown. Again, to show our gratitude for our active CA-2S participants we offer a way to help out another rideror our family member that may need medical attention.Believe me when I say, I have helped at least a halfdozen folks in need, you never know. I just completed aCPR/AED, First Aid course they offer us for free atwork and I recertify every 2 years as recommended.

So, if you want to make a difference in someone’s life, advance in the Levels program, or just be betterinformed, you have that chance.

Well, I have my longest trip on a motorcycle coming upin May, Yahoo!!! Deb and I are going to Colorado viasome beautiful stops along the way with Sal and Patti. We are all looking forward to this!!!

Chapter Director’s Message

Again, a BIG THANKS to Sal and Patti for openingtheir home for CA-2S participants in April, serving oneheck of a meal. Thank you for all who came andenjoyed food and Fellowship.Charlie & Debra Porzio Chapter Directors, CA-2SThe Joy is in the Journey!

The Spirit of CA2S

Last month I talked about getting involved. “There is only oneway to make things happen in any organization – that is to getinvolved in every aspect that you can.”

What I have seen in the past several months, as we grow innumbers, is the spirit of our Chapter participants in just abouteverything we do and how we do it. It is impressive andheartwarming.

This month started out nearly tragic for us. We had two seriousmotorcycle accidents the weekend of March 22. One occurredduring the Occidental ride. I was not on that ride and did notwitness the incident. What is impressive was the immediate andcoordinated effort by everyone in CA2S that was on the scene torender first aid, traffic control, whatever was needed to assistVon. That is the Spirit of CA2S.

Roger and I were at Streetmasters in Lancaster that weekend.During an exercise break, I got a call from Charlie who was onthe scene and told me of Von’s accident. I got what facts I couldbefore Charlie had to leave and speak to paramedics. Iimmediately went to Roger to update him. CA2S is family andeveryone cares. To both of us, it was like a family tragedy. Oneof our members went down and we all felt it regardless of wherewe were or what were doing. That night Roger, MK and I talkedabout Von, the Chapter, and riding. That is the Spirit of CA2S.

The very next day the three of us are on our way home fromLancaster. It could not be a better day for riding or a better ride.As we approached south San Jose I radioed goodbye to Rog andMK at the Hwy 85 split and headed the rest of the way home.Within moments, Roger was sliding down 101 with his bikegoing off on its own. It is almost comical to hear Rog tell thestory, but it could have been tragic. What was not comical is thephone call I got from MK as I walked in the door. She told me ofRoger’s accident. Honestly, with 101 traffic at 280 on Saturdayafternoon, I don’t know how he survived. He did! I advisedCharlie immediately. I was able to call and speak to Roger while

he was still on the scene. He was OK. I told him he hadwhatever resources he needed from CA2S available to him.Ron Clark got out to the scene and helped Roger manage all thelogistics with the police, tow trucks, etc, etc., you couldimagine. Ron then brought Roger to his and Shelly’s place andmade dinner for him. First aid comes in many packages andforms. Roger needed some friends around him and Ron andShelly were there. That is the Spirit of CA2S.

During the month several folks called Von to check in on himand offer whatever help he needed. I believe Roger sentsomething to him on behalf of all of us. A couple of weeks ago,Danny and I decided to take a ride to Patterson over Mt.Hamilton to visit with Von. We met him at Denny’s inPatterson and bought his lunch. When Von saw us, his smile litup the room. We were there for about 3 hours talking with him, sharing his story, but mostly listening. He had a lot of questionsabout his bike, what he should do, who he should contact, etc.Danny and I talked with him about his options. Von seemedrelieved just to have an ear to listen to him. That is the Spirit ofCA2S.

Our Chapter is growing in membership. People are gettingmore excited about what we are doing. Take a look at our RiderEducator program. We are so blessed to have the skills andknowledge of Rocky as our Chapter Educator and Roger as hisassistant. Together they put on informative and valuable classesfor us. Take a look at how many folks have got their first aidcards and attend other classes such as those presented by DocWong and Streetmastes. Not only that, Rocky takes the time topost Doc Wong’s classes and Danny get them, and so muchmore, in our great newsletter. That is the Spirit of CA2S.

Last week, a person who was a charter member of C2C(Almaden) in the 80’s contacted John Raser about rejoiningGWRRA. John got back with that person immediately. Ronand Danita, our MECs, contacted them as well and spoke withthem for quite awhile on the phone telling them about thebenefits of CA2S. They told them of all our activities. Theywere impressed with how quickly everyone got back to themafter the contact with John, and what CA2S was all about. Theyplan to join GWRRA and participate in CA2S. That is the Spiritof CA2S.

Last month’s wing nut process was a hoot. We had some funwith it. I threw out a couple of hooks and wow, did I get thebites. I had Chapter participants calling, writing, texting, to tryand “catch me if they could”, and they did to the tune of about$20 bucks out of my pocket – all for a good cause. In fact, wedid so well I claimed the “wing nut” title “King of theBoneheads”, and challenged others to beat my wing nut monthlytotal. Together we garnered over $100 in wing nut donations toRFK. That is because of all y’all that participated and had somefun with it. That is the Spirit of CA2S.

Patti’s Corner

The Spirit of CA2S… what a great slogan.

So, what else can we do?? I would like to see more couples attend the rides. On the last ride where we ended up in Moss Landingrather than Moss Beach, only two wives were there. For all you men riders, encourage your wife/partner to join us on the rides.Motorcycle rides are not just for the men to bond with each other. It is for all of us to have FUN together.

Some of you know that we participate with Alabama Chapter M when we are there. Most of the rides are attended by both halves ofthe couple. The ride leader has made it his mission to make the rides comfortable for the co-riders. That is his goal and it hasresulted in many wives participating in the rides. And, there are a number of solo female motorcycle riders who ride along… weshould see that more in our chapter.

So, let’s have FUN, go on some rides, and invite your wife/partner.If they don’t enjoy motorcycles, there is plenty of off things to do. Be sure to invite them to the other CA2S/GWRRA events…thechapter meeting, the garage sale, any parties that Sal and I host, BBQs, etc…. just buy a family membership with GWRRA and bringthe whole family.

Patti

ACD report continued:

On that note, we auctioned off some First Aid kits at the end of this months meeting. Roger won the bidding for the larger first aid kitby $1 buck beating out Jerry Campagna – $31 to $30. Prior to the ride, Rog called me over and gave me the first aid kit back saying Ishould auction it off at the next meeting. He already has a first aid kit for his bike. Instead, I went over to Jerry and asked if he’d liketo buy the first aid kit for $30 bucks – his final bid. He looked at me with big smile and said “sure”. Thanks Jerry, that is the Spirit ofCA2S. We collected another $76 bucks for Ride For Kids!

Last month, Patti and I opened our house to host a dinner party for CA2S. We had 21 folks attend, and what a party it was. We hadno special events planned, no games, etc. It was just good sharing of conversation and enjoying each others company. That part of ifwas a HUGE success. All I saw were smiles compounded by smiles, and trumped by more smiles and laughter. Those who stayed alittle later were ever so gracious to sit through the impromptu concert from Bill and I.Some folks asked why we were doing the party. It was because Patti and I wanted to say thank you. Since joining CA2S andGWRRA, we have made some great and long lasting friendships. I’ve learned a great deal about my motorcycle(s) on and off theroad. Patti has got her motorcycle license, and we have both become much better motorcycle riders thanks to CA2S and GWRRA.Most of all we wanted to say thanks for all the FUN, because it has been all that – FUN. Our party was a great success because of allof you that attended. That is the Spirit of CA2S.

What I see in our Chapter, regardless of the event or activity, is a lot of smiling faces! You can almost measure how happy a personin by how often they smile. In my opinion we have a lot of happy folks in CA2S and we are moving forward in a positive direction.CA2S - there is no stopping us now. That is the Spirit of CA2S.

Motorcycle Awareness Month

May is motorcycle awareness month. I hope you are allthinking about ways to make your upcoming season ofriding the best one yet.

First, start with your bike. Is it ready for the season withregular maintenance chores done or nearly finished? What extras could you add to provide moreconspicuousness? Adding more lights for night riding,so you can see more of the road ahead and can also beseen better after the sun sets. Bright colored ridingclothes, or safety hi-vis vests for night riding especially.Retro-reflective tape placed in the right places can dowonders to make you be seen before it is too late.

Are your riding skills freshened up? When is the lasttime you worked your quick stops or swerves. Youknow if you don’t practice these skills you won’t be ableto call on them in your time of need. What youpractice is what is going to happen in an accident orcrash scenario. If you don’t practice anything, “nothing”is really what will probably happen. When we talk aboutthe SEE strategy it means to be actively engaged in yourenvironment. Not, just staring ahead, but really noticingthose things that could be potential problems before theyunfold. Picking up clues as you ride along andprioritizing them as to what could be the most dangerousto you as a motorcyclist. An extra second can mean thedifference between avoiding a crash or participating inone. The faster you are riding the further ahead you needto be looking. Accidents are actually made up of manyfactors coming into play to create a chain of events.Break one link, and maybe you avoid the accident orminimize the overall impact.

Lane positioning is also a valuable tool in lettingmotorists see you. Position yourself where you can beseen when riding behind a car. The left inner side of thelane allows you to be seen in the rear-view mirror easilyand allows oncoming traffic to see you as well.Remember to leave enough following room so yourmargin of safety is there should you need to makeevasive maneuvers. Stay out of blind-spots. Try to stay

Safety Corner,by

Rocky Fagundes

out of gaggles where traffic is traveling in clumps.Position yourself with that margin of safety around youif possible.

No matter what we do as motorcyclists to presentourselves as “good examples”, there will always be afew drivers out there who have a “chip” on theirshoulder regarding motorcyclists. It was probablycaused by some random situation involving amotorcycle that the driver can’t let go of. Theseaggressive drivers need to be given the right of way.Let them go! The safest thing to do is steer clear ofthem. You will never win a “right of way” with a4,000lb SUV. Be courteous to other drivers. The“golden rule” applies here. Treat them the way youwould want to be treated.

As GWRRA members, we are ambassadors for themotorcycling community. Setting an example for thepublic to realize we are real folks just like them. Notlawless rebels without a cause! I am looking forward toa great riding season with many smiles along the way.Hopefully, some of them from the cars and folks wecome in contact with on our rides.

Leading By ExampleRecently, the District Directors received an email fromfurther up the chain of command that opened with thefollowing quote from Colin Powell, "I think whetheryou're having setbacks or not, the role of a leader isto always display a winning attitude." Whether youagree with Powell's opinion or not, the learning momentcame in the form of what followed in several paragraphsoutlining the areas that needed improvement and how theDistrict Directors were somehow responsible forreshaping the members' perception of decisions madeby home office. The contrast between what wassupposed to be a motivational statement and thenegative message highlighted how ignorant some leadersare of how our actions are perceived. As much as wemight wish it isn't so, the people that we volunteer withare always watching us to see if our actions areconsistent with our words. So many times, leaders willopen a conversation with an insincere platitude, only toundermine their own credibility by immediatelyfollowing up with a contradictory statement as if to shout,"Do as I say and not as I do!"

I am not condemning National for putting out a pooremail. Truth be told, my written communication skills areso inferior to my wife's, that she handles almost all of ouremail correspondence as well as publishes our monthlynewsletter. It is not that I am incapable of writing anupbeat, positive email; it is just that she is so much betterat it. In management terms, it is referred to asmaximizing available resources and allowing people toutilize their skills is not a new concept; successfulcompanies and organizations have been doing itforever. So how do glaring mistakes like this or the wayNational handled the mandatory Officer's Trainingprogram occur? Simply put, management skills areperishable skills and, if not exercised properly andregularly, deteriorate with time. Anotherexplanation might be that as volunteers, we aresometimes asked to perform tasks that we are not

District Director’s Messageexperienced in or well suited for, but rather thandisappoint the person asking, we agree to try and, sometimes end up with less than desirable results.

These problems exist at all levels of an organization, butthe higher the office of the person, the more obvious andglaring the situation appears. When something like thishappens at the chapter level, only the few membersdirectly involved in the dialog are aware of it. When itcomes from the home office and is directed to all of theDistrict Directors, it is bound to be a lot moreobvious. Interestingly, GWRRA has known for a longtime how difficult it can be to maintain these skills and hasa solution: the Leadership Training Program (LTP) and, specifically, the Horizons Program. To support theseinitiatives, Region F will host a Horizons Program at theirconvention in Utah and California will be offering LTPclasses at Visalia. We know that a few days of leadershiptraining is not going to make MBA's of our officers andmembers. Conversely, I have never met a more qualifiedand dedicated group of volunteers willing to so freely giveof their time and their talents. We are all volunteers andwe are all human. We are going to make mistakes and, occasionally, we are going to fall short of ourgoals. Perhaps what Colin Powell meant by a winningattitude was not that we will win every battle, but ratherthat we will never give up the fight to improve ourselvesand our condition. Pam and I look forward to seeing all ofyou in St. George in May over Memorial Day weekend.

Until next month, ride well and ride often.Vincent & Pamela

Roger showinghis damagedriding gear

April 20 Meeting & ride after

Ride revelations and ramblings. With all the riding awareness motorcyclists have to contend with, we still have time to let our mindswander. Sometimes it’s the beautiful scenery around us. The fun of having the wind in our face. Whatever. Sometimes, we’rethinking of problems at home/work, or some other little thing that’s annoying us.Bug splatter. That’s how it started one recent group ride for me. The warning signs were there. I was getting a little more helmetbuffeting from the wind, and my eyesight seemed to be right in line with the top of the windshield. If I slouched down a bit my lineof vision was through the windshield. And if I sat up straighter, I could see clearly over the windshield but got more air in the face, and couldn’t hear very well. Annoying. What changed, it hasn’t always been like this. Has it? Hmmm. What’s wrong?Ah, the little things that go through our minds as we ride along. These minor annoyances are important to resolve, so we don’t gettoo distracted and take our attention off our own safety and those around us. And it frees our mind to enjoy the weather, scenery, andcompany.Turned out to be a pretty simple fix to my problem actually. At the next rest stop, I loosened and raised the adjustable windshield.Seems it had slipped down on its own. Probably gradually over time and I didn’t notice. Problem solved and mind at ease. Now toenjoy the ride…Ride on,danny
