The term crimping means to press,make an impression, fold or evendeform by folding. In electricalinstallation the term crimping isused to describe the mechanicalcompression of a sleeve around aconductor to make a firmmechanical connection betweenthe conductor and the connector.Crimp connections have, to a largeextent, replaced solderedconnections and have provenextremely suitable for the task sincethey have been in use. They can onlybe used, however, if they satisfy allnecessary BS EN approvals. Theprerequisite for this is that theconductor, contact, crimping tool andtool setting are all co-ordinated.This means:a) The conductors and connectors

must match each other in terms of their capacity values. Thestripping length and positioning of the conductors in the connector should comply with the requirements of the various connectors.

b) Conductors and connectors mustbe matched to the crimp profilewhich suits both type and capacityand then should be positionedcorrectly. For some crimpconnections there are locatorswhich make precise positioningsimple. Using control markings, it is possible to check on somecrimp results after crimping, inorder to check that the crimp hasbeen successful.

c) Crimping pressure should beapplied evenly over the crimpprofile. This is best achieved bymeans of a parallel crimpingmotion. Crimping pliers areadjusted to achieve a predefinedcrimping pressure. To make certainthat this exact pressure is alwaysapplied to the contact, the toolshave a ratchet locking device. Thisensures that they cannot beopened again until the crimp hasbeen completed properly.

Tool maintenanceAll our tools are made to the veryhighest specifications but have to bemaintained in good condition. Assuch, they should be periodicallychecked to ensure the bestperformance.= Lubricate with general purpose

machine oil.= Check for excessive wear on pins.= Carefully inspect all parts including

die for wear, damage or breakage

= Check that the ratchet mechanismis releasing only on completion ofthe crimp cycle and is,consequently, not too tight fornormal use.

= Carry out tensile tests with themost frequently used terminaltypes including the largest andsmallest sizes.

Good practice crimping guide

Achieving the perfect crimp is easy when using a well maintained toolmatched to the terminal to be applied. Conforming to BS 7727: 1994 - code of practice for installation and inspection of pre-insulatedcompression terminals and connectors for cables with copper conductorsup to 6mm2 (10 AWG).
