element of local color and flavor to Cabo San Lucas’ older, calmer sister city. Intrigued by all the activity, we sat down with Alan, who shared with us his vision of Los Cabos-- not to mention his favorite places to enjoy his precious down time. See more on page 64.
CABO NOCHE, BIGGER & BETTERAs Los Cabos expands, so do Cabo Noche and Hautter.com. We have added new staff members and contributors to our team, and our staff utilizes a whole new set of tools to help us all stay in touch with each other (and to learn as much as we can about Los Cabos, the place we all call home). We’re hoping that our 38,000 Hautter members and 686,000 plus annual Cabo Noche readers will benefit from these changes, starting with this Summer 2009 Edition of the magazine. In other good news, Derrick and I have also expanded our family. Our son, Oliver,
OUR THIRD ANNIVERSARYAND SUMMER EDITION HIGHLIGHTS.With the release of our 12th edition, Summer (May-August 2009), Cabo Noche turns three years old. We will be celebrating this incredible milestone with our Masquerade party (www.hautter.com/masquerade-09) on Memorial Day weekend, kicking off both the summer season and the start of our fourth year in business in Los Cabos. We have worked tirelessly for these past three years to develop the magazine that you hold in your hands now, which has become the premiere source for entertainment and lifestyle news in Los Cabos. This edition covers all you need to know before you head to the beach, from this summer’s must-have fashion (pages 52 - 61) to our featured “New This Season” article. This article, on page 24, outlines all the new businesses, services, entertainment and dining available in the Los Cabos area, so you can keep busy and stay satisfied as the temperature climbs. No matter what’s happening elsewhere on the globe, Los Cabos continues to burst at the seams, growing and becoming more sophisticated. From the chic new boutique mall-within-a-mall called Luxury Avenue that now fronts the San Lucas Marina, to new global dining experiences (Israeli salad, anyone?), there’s more for the discriminating traveler than ever before. Which is not to say that we don’t continue to enjoy the dramatic sunsets, blue-water views and sunny weather that brought us here in the first place!
LOCAL COLOR & CULTURESome local movers and shakers are helping to shape Los Cabos’ future as it matures into a top resort destination. For example, Los Cabos Municipal Director of Culture, Alan Castro, is working overtime to turn the picturesque San José del Cabo into a beacon of cultural activity. Broadway musicals, cultural fiestas, and weekly foreign film screenings at the City Theater are just a few of the exciting events Alan has ushered into San José’s beautifully-preserved historic downtown, adding an

In recent years, Los Cabos has transcended its roots as a sleepy fishing hamlet and emerged as one of the world’s top resort destinations. Lo-cated at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, Los Cabos encompasses a vast, unspoiled desert terrain, fronted by pristine beaches and tranquil blue waters. At Land’s End, the dramatic rock outcropping known as the Arch marks the point where the azure Sea of Cortez meets the tempestuous Pacific. Twenty miles of white sand beach extends between the two cities that comprise Los Cabos. This resort and golf studded stretch of highway, which offers unrivaled views of des-ert, mountains and sea, is known as The Cor-ridor. To the east of The Corridor is San José del Cabo, where the handsomely preserved co-lonial downtown offers a glimpse of authentic Mexican culture, along with some of Southern Baja’s finest restaurants and art galleries. To the west, Cabo San Lucas is a beacon of night-life and activity. Bars and hotels open right onto popular Médano Beach, and downtown clubs are always bustling, vibrant affairs, from the rowdy El Squid Roe to brand new, sophisti-cated clubs like Mandala. As Los Cabos grows, so do the lav-ish amenities, services and activities. There are now two state-of-the-art marinas, dozens of hotels (from boutique hotels to sprawling re-sorts), spectacular private beachfront villas and some of Latin America’s most highly regarded
master-planned residential communities. Ex-traordinary recreational offerings abound, from Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses to charter yacht services to extreme sports, and so much more. To find out more about Los Cabos’ rapid transformation, visit www.hautter.com/cabo-reinvented.
THE BASICSMany businesses in Los Cabos continue to accept US dollars, although they may make change in pesos. Although the exact rate of exchange varies, most businesses post that day’s exchange rate near the register. To change money, visit your resort’s front desk or a Mexican bank. Most banks have ATMs, and you can withdraw Mexican currency with your foreign ATM card easily. Coins are in denomi-nations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 pesos, and bills are in 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 pesos. Most cell phones will work in Los Cabos. A few days before your trip, call your cell phone provider to confirm that yours is pro-grammed to work here; it may be possible to temporarily extend your coverage if it does not. Furthermore, there are now many new ways to call the US or Canada. Skype and other Voice Over IP services allow you to make phone calls using the Internet. Alternatively, you can visit many local businesses right here in Los Cabos that provide hassle-free US or Canada calling

services, such as those at Puerto Paraíso Mall.Phone dialing local numbers from a landline seems tricky, but it’s easy. Use our cheat sheet to assist you:
WEATHERLos Cabos enjoys extraordinary weather year round. There are around 350 days of full sunshine each year. Even the coldest months average 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. Cozy up to the fire pits at your villa or resort dur-ing the cooler desert evenings. Noth-ing beats lounging fireside with the surf pounding in the distance. These year-round high water temperatures, and the unique currents formed at Land’s End, produce a rich and varied marine life. For that rea-son, Los Cabos is a must-visit spot for divers, serious anglers and snorkelers alike. More than 850 species of marine life stipple the waters off Los Cabos’ shores. World-class fishing aboard charter yachts is available all year long, and annual catch-and-release tourna-ments attract millions of dollars in prize money. Those who prefer to see what’s under water up close must take a de-tour to Cabo Pulmo, the only living coral reef in Western North America. This remote, protected bio-park was dubbed “the aquarium of the world” by Jacques Cousteau. Located about 40 miles north of San Jose, it’s a worthy day trip. Bring cash to rent snorkel or dive gear.
CULTURE, LANGUAGE Y MÁSMany locals speak very good English in Los Cabos. Your concierge and other resort staff will most likely be fluent in English. But remember... even though you’re only a short plane ride from the US, Los Cabos is Mexico! Learning a few phrases in Spanish isn’t hard, thanks to the prolifera-tion of guidebooks or phrasebooks about the area. Not only will the locals appreciate your efforts to speak their language, it will make it easier for you to navigate Los Cabos. And if you are having trouble communicating, re-peat yourself more slowly, not louder, a com-mon beginner’s mistake! The culture in Los Cabos, like the people and the pace, is easygoing, for the most part. The atmosphere of a small beach town is intact, even as Los Cabos changes. Locals (known in Spanish as cabeños) are friendly and communicative. And although religion is not as prominent in Baja Sur as it is in other parts of México, where Catholicism is an important part of daily life, you’ll still spot images of the Virgin of Guadalupe and other religious icons in many homes-- and even on car decals. Religious and cultural fiestas are still lively, important community events—and provide a great way to experience local culture, food and flavor. Today, plans are in the works for a massive cultural center near the San Lucas Marina, which would include exhibits about ancient cave painters and the original settlers of Baja Sur. And many gal-leries and shops feature the work of skilled Mexican artisans and artists. Visit San José’s Art District, or any of the galleries in San Lu-cas, to discover more art and culture. All provide shipping services back to your US or Canada address.

APOSTOLISApostolis is one of the newest gastronomic treasures in San José del Cabo. Tucked behind the Mega plaza, a romantic, open patio with wine bottles dangling from the ceiling and breezy white curtains welcomes you as you step inside. The Greek-born chef—whose name is, in fact, Apostolis—greets each diner warmly, in English and Spanish, after one of the waiters sates you with the house version of bread and butter: a plate of creamy hummus accompanied by a tray of freshly-baked artisanal bread. Although you can occasionally hear the shouts from the soccer field across the street, you would swear you’re perched on the ocean as you delve into the expansive, Mediterranean-style menu. Order a plate of genuine tzaziki (a yogurt-based sauce, packed with fresh herbs and served with pita) to start. Or try the cream of lobster soup, a surprisingly delicate cream broth that tastes of butter, brine, and succulent hunks of sweet white
lobster. For dinner, try the beef fillet in brown butter or the incredible King Crab legs. Four enormous legs are served doused in a spicy butter sauce, and a delectable twirl of Alfredo-coated pasta in the dish’s center. Lamb fans will delight in the marinated lamb shish kebab, another house specialty, or sizzling shrimp (Adriatic OR Aegean sea style). A full bar is at your disposal and the staff mixes a great cocktail. Finally, for dessert, we like the flan, although the baklava (a Mediterranean dessert with flaky honey-drenched phyllo dough, nuts and cinnamon) is a more atmospheric choice. The chef or staff can also recommend a lovely dessert wine, if you are so inclined. Open Tuesday through Sunday, from 12 pm to 10 pm daily, Apostolis is in the Fonatur zone, behind the Mega plaza and across from the soccer field on Calle Punta Colorada. Call 624.172.6442 for reservations or email [email protected] for more information. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

APPLE LIFESTYLE STOREThose of us who are computer geeks or graphics fiends may have switched to Mac years ago, but the Apple brand is still a relatively new phenomenon in Mexico. Still, Mexicans are ready and willing to adapt—and a new “lifestyle” store has opened on the third floor of Puerto Paraiso mall in downtown Cabo, where newbies and geeks alike can browse the latest hard drive technology, Apple accessories, iPod and of course, the latest Apple computers. The store, though tiny, boasts Apple’s signature minimalist look—and don’t let its small size fool you. The helpful salespeople can order missing parts, provide technical support, service your Mac products, and repair iPods and iPhones, in addition to hocking the latest Apple goods. For more information, email [email protected] or call 624.144.3661 or 624.144.3660.
ARRIBA TEQUILA BARGiven that tequila is Mexico’s national beverage, it makes sense that some of the best new hotspots, like Arriba Tequila Bar, are shining a spotlight on it as a fine liquor. Arriba (which literally means upstairs in Spanish) is right above Las Quesadillas restaurant, the restaurant that sits on the corner across from Aramburo Plaza and feeds many a hungry gringo as they cross Lazaro Cardenas street and make their way over towards Marina Boulevard. Quesadillas’ owners decided to use the ample upstairs space to create a whole different atmosphere—no equipale chairs here. Instead, enjoy ambient lighting and professional entertainment, not to mention over 80 tequilas served up by friendly bar staff. And lest we forget, every order is served with a shot of tequila—on the house. Enjoy dance lessons (from samba to the tango) nightly, along with live music. The bar is open nightly from 6 pm, except Sundays. Email [email protected] or call 624.143.6700 extension 115 for more information.

BRP Located in the Costa Azul plaza on the highway in San Jose across from Cabo Surf, BRP is the new destination for those locals and visitors who love their toys. And we’re not talking about Legos, either. BRP carries Sea-Doo watercraft and sport boats, Rotax carts and engines, Can-AmTM ATVs, Evinrude and Johnson outboard engines and much, much more. Find the best recreational toys on the market, right in your backyard. Visit www.brploscabos.com, email [email protected] or call 624.172.6495 for more information.
CABO ESCAPEThere’s a new tour company in town called Cabo Escape, headquartered at the dock right in front of Tesoro Hotel in downtown Cabo San Lucas. Deli lunch is served on snorkel/kayak/sunbathing tours. Premium ticket holders can wakeboard and ride the tubes, too, on the personal ski boat. A sunset cruise on a 200 person catamaran features light tunes spun by a DJ as the cruise passes by the famous Arch, along with fresh guacamole, dinner and a bar. Email [email protected], visit www.caboescapetours.com or call 624.154.2187 for more information.
CABO SUBMARINE For a superior, hands-on look at the teeming sea life right beneath the sea’s surface, take a spin in the new Cabo Submarine, a 60 foot long, semi-submersible yellow submarine. The enormous, sturdy, 49 person capacity vessel is not your average submarine. Since the sub submerges only partially, you can retreat to the upper deck and catch some fresh air during the tour. And with 34 seats below deck, a large viewing port, and air conditioning, Cabo Submarine is an extraordinary way to view some of the 850 species that inhabit the waters directly off Los Cabos. Knowledgeable tour guides, flat screen TVs and a boatwide audio system will make you feel like you’re in a Jacques Cousteau film. This is one instance when you don’t want to forget your camera.

During the 55 minute tour, which departs from the Cabo San Lucas Marina, you’ll have the opportunity to feed fish at Pelican Rock, get up close to the Arch and Lover’s Beach, and spot diverse sea life like the King Angelfish, bright yellow Sergeant Major fish, Parrot fish, Puffer fish, Grouper, urchins and sea turtles-- not to mention enjoy a close encounter with the rowdy sea lion colony that hangs out around the rock formations at Land’s End. Tours depart daily from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, every hour, and private bookings are available. Go to www.cabosubmarine.com for more information. You can also visit either their Cabo Expeditions office or the Cabo Submarine office, both located in the Hotel Tesoro complex. Make reservations ahead of time by calling 624.143.2700, 624.143.8718 or email [email protected].
CASA SHALOM Casa Shalom is a breath of fresh air on Lazaro Cardenas, Cabo’s main street. With contrasting navy floral graphics on white paint, a plethora of plants, and glass beads spelling out Hebrew characters and swirls of color, the restaurant-café’s twinkling lights, candles, and throw pillows turn this brand new Mediterranean-Israeli restaurant into a gastronomic oasis. Enjoy top-notch hummus and falafel with Israeli-style pita bread, which is baked fresh in the oven that owner Smadar Arazi had built expressly for that purpose. Or lounge on the benches, enjoying a margarita and the house specialty cooked up by chef Eldad Arazi, called shak shuka—two eggs poached in a simmering tomato sauce, one of Israel’s signature breakfast dishes. The joint doubles as an internet café and a hangout for the owner’s motley, international group of friends. What’s more, they’re offering belly dancing classes, Kabala lessons and free WiFi. Open daily from 10 am to 11 pm except Saturdays, directly across from the mall in downtown Cabo. Call 624.144.4581 or email [email protected] for more information.
LA MONA PIZZA & CANTINAPAGE 31
EL SQUID ROE
NEW THIS SEASON32
EL SQUID ROE 3RD FLOOR Cabo’s infamous late-night party bar, the towering El Squid Roe, just got bigger and better. But fear not—this fall and winter’s big money facelift hasn’t altered Squid’s anything-goes atmosphere. If anything, it’s only guaranteed that the party will keep on going, just more high octane than ever. El Squid Roe, long the favorite destination of both locals and tourists looking for an unforgettable, alcohol-infused late night, recently got two whole new floors. Yes, that’s right—El Squid Roe now has four stories of people-watching, dancing, hip-shaking action. But don’t get ahead of yourself just yet: only A-listers, loyal customers and the most beautiful faces in the Baja will get to ride the brand-new, open freight elevator all the way to the top story, where panoramic views of Land’s End and downtown Cabo are rivaled only by the view downstairs, onto the Squid’s legendary dance floor. The new third floor, which, like the second floor, wraps around the establishment,
will even boast drinks rails allowing a bird’s eye view of the madness below. Only the elevator will bring Squid’s favorite guests to the new level. And the fourth floor lounge area, at the tippy top, will have its own bar and seating, too. While there are cosmetic changes galore, too—like brand new, funky tiled restrooms, new flooring and wicked new furniture—Squid’s owners assure us that the character of even the most expensive details is still Squid-approved. (The furniture, a stark contrast to the uber-modern “lounge” style that’s become a cliché at other clubs, has been tested to ensure that even the spikiest women’s heels won’t damage it when the girls get up on the new pieces to dance—which they do, and will.) The radical renovation, not coincidentally, was slated to wrap up in a very important year. 2009 marks El Squid Roe’s 20th anniversary, and the bar and restaurant’s partners are stopping at nothing to make 20 the most memorable year yet. That’s. For the

first time ever in the 20 year history as Cabo’s landmark bar and restaurant, El Squid Roe will be closed to the public this October 24th. Because for the first year in its history, it will host the most outrageous private event on the Los Cabos club calendar: the 11th Annual Cabo Pimp N‘ Ho Costume Ball (see www.pimpnhomexico.com). Meanwhile, however, the rest of us get to enjoy a revamped, much bigger and better version of our favorite come-as-you-are bar, with a new DJ booth (with sliding glass panes, overlooking the entire club) and a new, rotating cage for the more adventurous among us. The party still goes all day every day, from 12 pm to 4 am (5am on weekends), and dinner at the famous (and very good) Billy Kitchen is served until 11 pm daily. To coin a phrase, at El Squid Roe, it’s still all about mayhem with style—now, who wants to ride that elevator? Visit www.elsquidroe.com for more details about the storied establishment and read the Billy Kitchen menu, or call 624.143.0655 or 624.143.1269. Credit cards accepted.
LA MONA PIZZERIA & CANTINAOn the highway, in the plaza across from Cabo Surf Hotel—which fronts one of San Jose’s best-known surf breaks—is a brand new pizzeria, La Mona Pizzeria & Cantina. With a full bar, flat screen TVs showing the best sports games, and a great outdoor terrace, La Mona is the place to go after a day of exhilarating surf lessons. They cook their superb New York style pizzas in a wood-fired brick oven, and the result is well worth it: chewy crust, a tangy sauce and imported cheese make each bite memorable. (Try the African pie, with strips of oven-roasted red and yellow peppers and meaty slices of portabello mushrooms—it’s delicious.) Light eaters and health nuts will love La Mona’s creative salad toppings and homemade dressings. At night, La Mona doubles as a live music venue and night owl haunt—but keeps serving pizza, all the way until 1 am. Their hours are Sunday-Wednesday, 12 pm to 12 am (the bar stays open until 1 am). Thursday-Saturday, the kitchen stays open

until 1 am and the bar keeps hopping until 3 am. Email [email protected] or call 624.172.6626 for reservations (or to order takeout).

In other words, a place for the tragically hip to find all the latest trends and some unique items that were previously unavailable in Los Cabos. Lottus’ owners Kandinsky Borja and Mirna Maravilla hail from Tijuana. in the mood for change, and yearning for the reprieve of Cabo’s endless summer, they relocated their shop to our neck of the woods just this January. LUXURY AVENUE MALLThe Cabo San Lucas marina’s so-called Golden Zone is now dominated by Luxury Avenue Mall, a mecca of duty free, high end shopping that fronts the marina and opens into the Puerto Paraiso mall. With its chic, modern white tiled columns and glassed-in countertops and boutique storefronts, Luxury Avenue (much like the one in Cancun) gathers all the best international brands under one towering roof. Over 60,000 square feet of shopping includes boutiques and brands like Carolina Herrera, Cartier, Chopard, Coach, Fendi, Hermés, Montblanc, Paul & Shark, Rossano Ferreti, Salvatore Ferragamo, Swarovski, Tous, Ultrafemme, Ultrajewels and Vilebrequin, all in one place: a shopper’s dream. They’re even offering personal shopping services,

and the well-trained staff is supported by watchful security. Luxury Avenue’s glittering black fountain, curving staircase and enormous white façade are now visible from every corner of the San Lucas marina. The product of Grupo Ultrafemme, Luxury Avenue is a boon to the San Lucas downtown, and a must-see destination along our world-class marina. The mall is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm. MANDALA FOOD & WINE CLUB Mandala is the latest in a series of new places to party in Cabo that strive to be something other than a local watering hole. Walking into the enormous, slickly-lit, uber-modern lounge ambience of Mandala, with its velvet rope entrance and its second-floor Sky Mandala lounge (dotted with real palm trees, sand, and a glowing dance floor), is like entering a new world. Unlike some well-seasoned Cabo bars, no beachwear is allowed inside of the
chic Mandala, where bottle service is the norm and waiters shoo wannabes from pre-reserved tables. Mandala can house 1500 people, half downstairs and half upstairs. The first floor club features flat screens and a video DJ, whereas the second floor boasts a beachy feel with cabanas and a far-reaching view. The Mandala is right next door to the legendary El Squid Roe, making bar-hopping even easier. Make sure to try the sushi downstairs, too. Open daily from 7 pm to 4 am. Make reservations by calling 624.132.9681 or Nextel 72*622184*1. Club phone number is 624.143.2054. Credit cards accepted. RENOVATION : SR. GREENBERG’S A longtime Cabo favorite (now at Puerto Paraíso and Plaza San Lucas, where Wal-Mart is located), Greenberg’s first floor mall location underwent a renovation in 2008, expanding and updating the interior as the rest of Puerto Paraíso underwent its own renovations. Now, the mall location, with its expansive marina-side patio, diner-like booths and WiFi connection is better than ever. Local design firm Jett Black Interiors gave Greenberg’s a stylish, funky facelift, but the excellent food is the same: a blend of NY style deli favorites and Mexican standards, including a top-notch tortilla soup and great, filling meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Credit cards accepted. The mall outpost is open daily 7 am to 10:30 pm. Email [email protected] or call 624.144.3804.
SCOOP SUPPER CLUB & HOTELTucked four blocks up from Puerto Paraiso mall, on Leona Vicario street, is
yet another new hotspot. This one caters to those who visit Cabo often and want a change of pace from the tee-shirted masses down at the local watering holes, and emphasizes meeting up with friends, old and new, away from the tourist bustle. Gringo Gazette publisher Carrie Duncan teamed up with partner (and hospitality industry vet) David Flores to create Scoop, a bar and supper club that features top-notch fusion cuisine, from chile-dusted house French fries and mini sliders to sandwiches, beef tenderloin and upscale bar food like baby back ribs. All this is available every day at 5 pm—and the jazzy live music sets, with local favorites like Daline Jones, kick off at 8 pm. Enjoy the bar (upstairs or down), or book the private room for conferences or parties. The best part is, you can spend the night in the heart of Cabo’s downtown in one of the third-floor, $60 hotel rooms.

SUMMERTRENDSWHERE TO FIND THEM IN CABO Shopping in Los Cabos is a treat. It’s not Rodeo Drive; instead, the fun is in finding this summer’s bright, funky pieces in one of the many trendy, boutique-style shops around town. Whether you’re planning to spend your time on the beach or out on the town, Los Cabos’ shopping scene has plenty to offer the fashion conscious. Miranda Fae, fashion designer and proprietor of Tumbleweed, took Cabo Noche on a fashion excursion, showing us where to discover the
latest summer trends right here in Los Cabos. Wear our first find, cutout heart earrings made of seashells (right page) for a lighthearted touch (from the Sea Shell Museum and Store in Plaza Puerto Paraíso, in Cabo San Lucas). Pair them with plaids in this season’s lively blues and purples, like the Rojas plaid short jumper (page 58) that cinches tight with a tie waist from Tumbleweed. If plaid’s not your thing, the tube top styled jumper (page 58) from Glamour (Calle Aguajitos, next to Soriana

in Cabo San Lucas) is a more understated choice, yet sexy and playful, too. Donnina (see ads pages 10 and 87) is a great place for serious fashionistas, with must-have seasonal items that can be dressed up or down like these dark washed denim jeans (page 54) that feature colorful embroidered feathers. Wear yours with strappy purple sandals (page 52) from Shasa (in Plaza Puerto Paraíso); they’re comfortable enough to enjoy at Médano Beach but have enough style for lunch at Nikki Beach (see ad page 141). Add a pop of color with a funky, asymmetrical armlet, like those on pages 56 and 57. We found them at Allegra, also at Plaza Puerto Paraíso. A bright, ocean-blue strapless dress with a colorful waist tie (page 53) at Nina Boutique (on Camino al Faro in Cabo San Lucas) is perfect for a daytime stroll around the San Lucas marina. In San José del Cabo, the new fashion boutique Lottus (read more page 32 and see ad page 100) has some adventurous finds, like the wacky 80s style glasses on page 59. In general, for men, plaids and graphic prints are everywhere this season. Bold patterns in bright colors are key, like the tee shirts on page 60 from Beach House in Plaza Puerto Paraíso, or the blue plaid shorts on page 55 from Perimetro (Av. Lopez Mateos in Cabo San Lucas, 624.144.4414). Soccer star

CABOPROFILEALAN CASTROAlan Castro is one of San José’s most charismatic and recognizable political faces. After the energetic, gifted law student saw his first performance of a Broadway musical in college, his life changed dramatically. His love of the theater took him across international stages all over Europe during his early twenties, with a university theater troupe. He completed his degree to become a lawyer, but it was his love of culture that shaped his life. After working on his first political campaign in Los Cabos, at age 22, he was appointed Minister of Culture of Los Cabos. Now, seven years later, Alan Castro is one of the government’s most dedicated and visible figures. Under our current mayor, Rene Nuñez, Alan Castro has thrown all his
energy and talent into transforming Los Cabos (and especially San Jose’s new City Theater) into a beacon of cultural activity. He has planned and executed countless stage performances and cultural fiestas in San Jose. A self-professed workaholic, Castro’s love for Los Cabos and its citizenry is rich and infectious. Hundreds of people turn out for the events he plans, including everything from guitar concerts, folkloric ballets, and Al Jardine performances to Broadway shows put on by renowned theater troupes.Visit his online events calendar at www.metroflog.com/alancastro2007 to see upcoming events, including art house and foreign film screenings at the City Theater —all free and open to the public.
What time do you normally wake up?Three days a week I have to wake up before 6 am to teach. Then, I go over to the office at 9 am and work very late. But I like to stay in bed late if I have the time.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?[Whistling and raising his brow.] I like to say that happiness is just a collection of beautiful moments that you can put in a box, and you can open this box when you are sad.
What is your motto?I have seen a lot of people with problems. I try to become friends with the people I work with in the government. In 8 years, I have grown to know many of them. And when someone doesn’t show up or says they are having trouble in their personal lives, I say, “I have problems too, but I’m here.” That’s my phrase. Everybody lives their own hell, one way or another; it’s true. But it’s not an excuse.
What is your greatest fear?My greatest fear is to end my life without being a person that everyone around me recognized as a good member of society. I don’t mean that I don’t like to make mistakes; that’s part of life. But I can’t imagine getting to the end of my life, my own life, without being a person who made a difference or who did some good. I would like to be useful for the people. (He pauses.) That’s my greatest fear. Even more than snakes!
Which historical figure do you most identify with?I want to be as visionary as Alexander the Great, but as creative as Leonardo da Vinci.
What is your most valuable possession?I don’t want to sound like a narcissist, but I read the memoir of a political prisoner once. In one of the chapters he said to himself, “They can use your body, control your body, but not your

mind.” I think you can lose all you have, but no one can take you from you. The most valuable possession for me is myself and my mind and the freedom and liberty I have.
What is your favorite food?I could spend the rest of my life just eating fish and shrimp. On the other hand, the pasta of Italy… mmmm.
What is your favorite restaurant within 15 minutes of your house?Well, I haven’t been invited to the most expensive restaurants here yet. (Laughs.) I’m not joking! When you’re a local here, you sometimes don’t go to the best restaurants, because, you know, you’re not on your honeymoon. I do love La Dolce in downtown San Jose. That would be one of my favorites. But some of my most favorite places are small, Mexican places. I love the fish tacos at Rossy’s. I also live very close to Zipper’s. Actually, I eat
very often there; I eat so often there, it must be very good, and the view is beautiful.
Can you cook? No. But I’m very good with barbecues. I love barbecues. I am lucky, because where I live I have a very beautiful view to the ocean. So I really enjoy barbecuing for my friends and family when I have the time, outside, with a view to the ocean. And I’m very good at making guacamole. I really enjoy the whole process of grilling outside, enjoying the heat of the fire and the view.
In the entire world, what is you favorite place? Paris. Absolutely. Everything in Paris was huge. Even the egos of the French, but I liked that part. The art, the culture, it’s all huge, the ego, the Eiffel Tower. Everything was full of life and light.

UPSCALE SAIL ABOARD THE TROPICAT72
What’s a trip to Cabo San Lucas without a leisurely boat spin around the infamous Arch, that ancient, majestic rock structure that dominates the view from Médano Beach?
There are countless ways to experience the pristine Cabo bay up close. City-long cruise ships, pontoons, enormous yachts, sailboats and even semi-subs gather at Land’s End. But all boats are not created equally. The sleek, state-of-the art 65-foot catamaran known as Tropicat is one of only several vessels in Cabo’s boat-speckled waterway created specifically with Cabo in mind. It is one of the smoothest rides in town, thanks to its grand size and modern engineering. The Jazz and Wine Sunset Tour aboard Tropicat skimps on nothing, from freshly-prepared food to quality wine and jazz.
Indeed, what sets Tropicat apart are the same qualities that drove its owners, Steve and Annie Murphy, to commission it to be built in the first place. While the storied booze cruise is a Cabo experience unto itself, a ride on the Tropicat is all about catering to a more discriminating passenger. The sunset cruise is a relaxing, noteworthy detour that deserves an early evening slot on every well-planned Cabo itinerary. Interestingly, while the Tropicat vessel is a relative newcomer to the charter scene here, the business’ longtime owner, Steve Murphy, is not. Long before he met wife Annie, who currently manages the business end of their charter company, Murphy made waves by helming one of the first charter tour boat companies in Cabo San Lucas. In 1983, when Cabo was still a tiny fishing village attracting only the most adventurous tourists to its mostly-unpaved, charmingly slipshod downtown watering
SUMMER 2009 | CABONOCHE.COM
holes, Steve Murphy partnered up with his uncle and the owner of a brand-new catamaran so the three men could to try and jump-start a charter tour business. It was a concept that had worked well in places like the Caribbean, where the tourism industry was firmly entrenched. Before settling on Cabo, Murphy’s partners needed to be convinced. Why Cabo? Was the Southern Baja really ready for such a business? But Murphy had an inkling of where Baja, and specifically Los Cabos, was going. “I’d been here previously in 1976,” he recalled, “mostly surfing and fishing, and I knew that Fonatur [the Mexican government’s tourism development agency] was going to invest a lot of money here and that it was going to be Mexico’s newest, biggest resort. So when my uncle and the boat’s builder approached me I said, ‘Boys, I think we should take this boat to Mexico.’” History
has vindicated his predictions; in 2009, it’s almost unimaginable that Cabo’s future as an internationally renowned resort was even a question. Luckily, Cabo, even then, spoke for itself. His partners were enchanted with the phenomenal, temperate weather, warm waters, and unique positioning of the area, which lies near the Tropic of Cancer, at the very spot where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific mix at Land’s End. After some hurdles (e.g., charter law on the books at the time mandated that all charters operating in Mexico be built in the country), and a few phone calls to a buddy’s father at the San Carlos Marina, he arranged for the Pez Gato I’s construction. The first catamaran in Murphy’s Cabo fleet, it was built entirely in San Carlos, México and sailed to Cabo in 1984, making it the first boat of its kind in the area.

REGIONALSUMMERRECIPEHuachinango with Achiote Seasoning and Broccoli Couscous
HUACHINANGOThe Pacific red snapper is a fish that you must try fresh. With a delicate flavor and firm white flesh (the name comes from the color of its skin), it’s a regional delicacy that, not unlike flounder, can be raised to dizzying culinary heights with the right preparation. A classic Mexican seasoning paste, Achiote, is a wonderful way to make snapper shine. Achiote is available ready-made at many Latin American markets, and of course, at nearly ever grocer here in Los Cabos. It’s a thick, deep-red seasoning, also referred to as annatto, is often used in cochinita pibil and other Latin meat dishes. The mellow but rich flavor lets the sweet, firm huachinango take center stage, while impart-ing a complex, warm flavor profile.
COUSCOUSOriginally from North Africa, is a great alter-native to rice in this recipe, similar in taste to pasta (and also made with wheat). It’s a perfect side dish, bright but not overpowering the snapper. Chiles guajillo are moderately spicy and very popular in Mexico, and can be purchased dry and reconstituted. Nearly every Mexican grocer carries these, too.
INGREDIENTS:2 red snapper filets (apx. 400 grams or about 7 oz. each)1 garlic clove1 to 2 sprigs of cilantro 1/2 cup broccoli buds (shave off green buds with knife)1/2 cup raw couscous2 tablespoon Achiote paste4 dried guajillo chilies1 teaspoon white vinegar 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oilSalt & pepper

REGIONAL SUMMER RECIPE76
SUMMER 2009 | CABONOCHE.COM
INSTRUCTIONS:Either purchase (or catch) your huachinango. If you buy it, try to find it at a fish market or from a local fisherman. Ask to see the fillet with the skin on so you can
be sure you’re buying the real deal. To prepare your fillets, clean the fish carefully, ensuring that there are no small bones. Remove the scales, trying not to damage the fillets.
Take your four guajillos chilies, slice off the tops and halve them with a sharp knife. Using the knife, clean out the seeds (most of the heat is concentrated in the seed, not
the flesh). To reconstitute dried chilies, follow package directions or add dried chilies to a dish full of boiling water. They’ll soften in about two to three minutes, after which point you can remove and strain the pulp.
In a blender, combine the guajillos chilies, the Achiote paste and the vinegar. Blend until the sauce thickens. Strain the sauce to get a uniform consistency and remove
the skin of the chilies. Spread the sauce evenly, covering the fillets, and marinate for 30 minutes.
To prepare the cilantro, wash thoroughly and discard the stems. Use a food processor or blender to combine the leaves with about two tablespoons of olive oil, some salt and
pepper. (Add more to taste, and enough oil to create a cilantro-infused oil, as necessary.) In a mixing bowl, pour about 1/2 cup of boiling water over the couscous, allowing it to soften in about 8 minutes. Add broccoli, mixing one tablespoon of olive oil and vinegar to the mixture, with salt and pepper to taste.
Pour about a tablespoon of olive oil in a heavy skillet and heat over medium heat. When the pan is hot, add the snapper fillets. Fry each side for about two to three
minutes depending on the thickness of the fillet; make sure not to overcook the delicate fish. Place broccoli couscous on serving plate, top with cooked fish and decoratively drizzle cilantro oil atop the fillets. Pair with a crisp white wine.
Enjoy!

IGNORE THE HYPE—LOS CABOS IS STILL AS SAFE AND QUIET AS EVER
Tijuana
MEDIAMISREPORTSMEXICO
By: L.D. Cortés
Recently, Cabo Noche and Hautter.com have been receiving more inquiries than usual about how safe it is to travel to Los Cabos. It seems that, now that overhyped fear about a recession has finally retreated into the background, Mexico’s several decades-old “drug war” is once again the center of primetime news attention. And the media melee is making many would-be visitors, even those who know and love Cabo, apprehensive about visiting.
But what the media isn’t telling you is crucial, and this lax news reporting has generated some irresponsible assumptions.

Instead of global media reporting on violence taking place in Juarez (pronounced hWA-rez), news reports regularly describe the issue with a broad stroke, calling it “violence in Mexico.” That phrase is catchier, and perhaps easier to pronounce, but it’s terribly misleading. Mexico is a vast territory, of
which the entire state of Baja California Sur represents a mere 3.6% of its total land mass. Baja Sur, the southernmost state on the Baja peninsula, is an entirely different state than Baja Norte, home to Tijuana—where only a SMALL FRACTION of the country’s drug-related violence has occurred. The real epicenter of violence is taking place on Mexico’s mainland, in the city of Juarez, which is an 1,800 plus mile drive from Cabo. Even Tijuana is over 1,000 miles away by car. Is anyone in Milwaukee worried about what’s going on in Los Angeles? Probably not, but you could drive from Milwaukee to LA faster than you could drive from Los Cabos to Juarez. In fact, the whole state of Texas has more to be worried about, geographically speaking, than Los Cabos does. Our tiny enclave, nestled at the tip of the Baja peninsula, is thousands of miles (and an entire sea) away from Juarez. Yet El Paso is less than two miles away from Juarez, which is Ground Zero for

the current media focus on drug related violence in Mexico. Los Cabos is actually farther away from Juarez than the American cities of El Paso, Tucson, Phoenix or Palm Springs. By quite a lot. We even measured it for you, just to be certain! Check out the map on page 78, which shows, in plain view, just how unfounded the media hype really is. What’s worse, all this media frenzy just obscures how robustly Los Cabos performs as a high-end tourist destination. During peak season, each week some 25,000 plus visitors touch down in Los Cabos; another 15-25,000 visitors reach our shores via cruise ships. All the major lines stop off here, from Disney to Carnival to Rotterdam, Ryndam, Norwegian Star and many more. Furthermore, the peso’s recent devaluation means that investment in Los Cabos is more productive than ever. There’s simply no place like Cabo to live or play,
and the continued development of five star properties, signature golf courses, luxurious master-planned communities, marinas and other quality amenities makes Los Cabos one of the most attractive foreign locales for second or retirement home purchases in the world. The short distance by plane from the US makes it a no-brainer. And Los Cabos has only recently been developed. Just three decades ago, in 1976, the government started developing Los Cabos in earnest, and the master plan laid out plenty of room for luxury attractions, from desert and ocean golf courses to beachfront residential developments. Money was poured into Los Cabos with the

intention of catering almost exclusively to a high-end market.
Continuous and plentiful foreign and national investment in tourism has helped Baja Sur’s economy grow at a faster rate than the national average. Between 2000 and 2006, Baja Sur’s economy swelled 4% faster than the nation’s economy did during the same period of time. One look around, and it’s no wonder why. With over 800 miles of pristine coastline (including the islands), Baja Sur is prime resort material, not to mention ideal water sports territory. You can kayak out to sea lion colonies and empty beaches, or jetski from one town to another—just be aware of whales in season! Diving is also incredible, with hundreds of marine species on hand. And of course, fishing for sport in Baja Sur, the “marlin capital of the world,” is a major attraction. These extraordinary natural resources are complemented by the state’s low unemployment, vast rural territory, and an economic dependence on foreign tourism, firmly establishing Baja Sur as one of the most serene and scenic states in the entire country. If you’re still having doubts, remember this: drugs (and the troubles they carry with them) flow toward the source of demand. (Which is to say, UP!) Not to put too fine a point on it, but our geographical isolation from the US, the Mexico mainland, and the US-Mexico border means that we’re not even on the same path. Los Cabos is so far from everything—Tijuana to the north,
Currently, 69% of all Los Cabos hotel rooms are five star rated, including nearly 100% of all rooms in The Corridor (between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas).

the mainland of Mexico to the east, all the way across the Sea of Cortez—that even Mexicans refer to it as “the other Mexico,” a kind of de facto island community. Finally, on a whole, the country of Mexico remains the tenth most visited tourist destination in the whole wide world. That’s an impressive accolade, in no small part due to the millions of Americans and Canadians who travel here regularly. And these days, many of those foreign visitors wind up staying (us included!). Today, right now, more Americans live in Mexico than in the UK or Canada. So unless you are planning to visit Los Cabos with the “Idiot’s Guide to Starting a Drug Cartel in an Isolated Area of Mexico” and a sack of contraband in tow, you’re simply not going to find any evidence of the media-hyped “drug war” here. On most days, we feel safer in our little corner of paradise than we did in the US. Other than taking the usual common sense precautions, we spend a lot more time thinking about sunscreen than safety measures. We love Los Cabos, and we’re sure many of you do too—or you will, as soon as you finally get here!

BAJA’S ONLY AUTHENTIC IRISH PUBFEATURING CABO’S LARGEST SELECTION OF BEER
“We used to sail up and down Médano Beach looking for tourists to hop on the boat with us,” Murphy explained, bemused. At that time, as he remembers it, the marina was mostly “sawdust.” Pez Gato II and III were acquired in the 90s, by which point Murphy was making a tidy business with relatively few competitors in town. But after years appealing to a certain market—and with his brand new wife Annie in tow—he got the inspiration to do something a little different. As Annie Murphy explains it, “My vision was, I wanted to have a boat that served nice wine, and had nice music, and none of the boats were doing that.” Her husband agreed. “We got a new partner and we went out and built the boat in St. Croix,” he said. St. Croix is an island in the Caribbean, part of the Virgin Islands. They commissioned a boat that mirrored the same changes taking place in Cabo San Lucas. Something luxurious, spacious, and better equipped than the average pleasure cruiser. They wanted a boat that would appeal to a more refined clientele—the kind of people who were starting to flock to Cabo’s shores in droves. “We wanted to design something that me and my wife actually wanted to get on ourselves. We were over the booze cruise and the party boats,” he said. Within four and a half months, their Virgin Islands builder

had created a luxurious catamaran unlike any other boat in Cabo. By commissioning something that looked and felt different than what was already on the market, Steve and Annie had, perhaps unwittingly, created what would become their flagship vessel. The Tropicat gets rave ratings from everyone who steps on board. Because of its size—at 65 feet long and 30 feet across—the Tropicat provides what might be the smoothest sailing trip on the Cabo bay in a catamaran-style vessel. What’s more, its select appointments and details, including a waterslide, two restrooms, and enough state-of-the-art safety and communications equipment to rival any private yacht, make the trip safe and comfortable, too. It’s not all about the boat, either. The Tropicat cruise will leave your palate (and your ears) sated. The Jazz and Wine Sunset Cruise features premium wines, delectable Mexican hors d’oeuvres and finger foods (a smorgasbord including roasted carne asada, vegetarian beans, and plates of sumptuous appetizers, cheeses, crackers, fruits and more), not to mention a great selection of contemporary jazz music on the superior sound system. The elements all come together to create an ambience that complements the spectacular scenery and jaw-dropping sunsets. When we asked if Steve had ever considered taking his expertise to other points in Mexico and beyond, he admitted he had been asked—but had yet to relocate his heart or his business elsewhere. “I specialize in Los Cabos, in Baja, this is what I do,” he explained. “There’s not many places on the map that afford this many things. I see Cabo always remaining the premier destination in Mexico.” To make reservations on the Tropicat or one of the company’s other charter catamaran or trimaran boats, call 624.143.3793 or email [email protected]. The Tropicat has a 90 person capacity and can also be booked for private events.

What’s your favorite bar to hang at?Mandala is beautiful, and the service there is getting better and better. I have been back many times and I love it. And El Squid Roe. I love the style of Mandala, if you are coming with the right group of friends, but with El Squid Roe, you can go by yourself, and you will always have a great time.
What’s your favorite activity to do in Baja Sur?Believe it or not, I love kayaking to the Arch. When I have the free time!
What’s your favorite beach in Baja Sur?Sometimes I drive all the way to Los Barriles just to sit on the beach, to be alone, think and come up with new ideas. I also love the ocean in between Loreto and Mulege. That is one of the greatest places in Baja Sur. I really enjoy being a tourist in my own state.
What album would drive you the least crazy if left on loop for a year?I would choose something retro. One of my favorite groups is Abba, so the “Mamma

Mia” soundtrack is a great option. You can remember the beautiful Greek island and the color of the ocean by just listening to the soundtrack. Or “Grease.” Can you think of another Broadway musical that you can also hear at El Squid Roe?
What talent do you wish you had?The ability to have an agenda. I don’t usually miss appointments or meetings, but I trust my memory too much. Our mayor Rene [Nuñez], he has so many gadgets, Palm Pilots and everything. And me, my schedule, well, I just write it on a small piece of paper or try to remember it. I am jealous when I watch someone with the ability to be organized with information. This is a beautiful ability of women, and so I admire men who have it, too. Women are naturals.
What’s your greatest regret?Three or four times in my life, I have been very cruel to people just because they were in my way of achieving certain objectives. Letting the passion of the work become part of my personal life is not right, it’s something I have to change. Things are never as you plan them. In the government, that is especially true, and sometimes that is difficult for me. It’s hard to remember that everyone lives in a completely different universe outside of work. Sometimes I think that something is good for the community or the city, and I want everyone else to see it, too. But all the time, someone disagrees with you. There can be too much passion for your work. I must change that. OK, now I have to go make a few phone calls and ask for forgiveness from a few people!
If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?Visionary. I wanted to say “dreamer,” but I want a word that means that I dream about things and make them happen. I was also thinking of workaholic, but that’s part of being visionary.

STARBUCKS COFFEEIn recent years, Starbucks has become as ubiquitous in Mexican cities at it is in the States. The renowned coffee brand’s appearance on Cabo’s Marina Boulevard, in the heart of downtown, nestled between Liverpool and the Hard Rock Café, is a sign that our seaside fishing town is finally growing up. So much so that even the ‘Buck’s Mexican employees are hip to the benefits of ordering up a skinny
frappuccino—although in Mexico, the drink sizes and details are all in Spanish. Other than that—and a few exciting panini sandwiches unique to the Mexican version of our favorite coffee joint—once you walk in the door, it’s hard to tell what country you’re in. Expect all your favorite espresso based drinks, with a few new flavors, churned out by smiling baristas, not to mention Starbucks goodies from coffee mugs to new music, movies and books. And yes, there are cookies, decadent desserts and event bottled frappuccinos to go. Better still, bring your laptop and settle in one of the comfy chairs downstairs or surf the web (and people watch) from the second floor lounge. Wireless internet for customers, gift cards, and yes, they even take credit cards. Visit www.starbucks.com or call 624.143.8871 for more information.
