Tiu chun ph bin nht hin nay l IEEE 802.11b. Tiu chun 802.11b c Hip hi k s in v in t (IEEE) a ra vo thng 9 nm 1999. Mng WLAN IEEE 802.11b tc cao hot ng bng tn 2.4 GHz v c th cung cp tc truyn dn ln ti 11 Mbps. IEE 802.11b ch xc nh hai lp cui ca m hnh tham chiu OSI: lp vt l (PHY) v lp lin kt s liu (phn lp iu khin truy nhp MAC) (Hnh 3).

Lp vt l ca IEEE 802.11b chia thnh 2 phn: giao thc hi t lp vt l (PLCP) v phn lp ph thuc mi trng vt l (PMD). PMD thc hin vic m ho v gii m v tuyn cong PLCP trnh by giao din chung phn lp MAC v cung cp vic cm ng sng mang v n nh knh ri (CCA).
