Methods of indicating dimensions:
1) Unidirectional system2) Aligned system
Unidirectional system:
In this method, the dimensions shall be horizontally placed so that they can be read from the bottom of the drawing sheet. The dimension values are interrupted to their dimension lines and are preferably.
Aligned system:
In this method, the dimensions shall be horizontally placed parallel to and above the dimension lines. They are preferably in the middle and not by interrupting the dimension line. Here the dimension can be read from the bottom (or) from the right side of the drawings.
Methods of dimensions:
(a) Chain dimensioning(b) Parallel Dimensioning.
Some of the Dimensioning Rules:
i. Arrow heads must touch the extension line.
ii. Location of holes should be dimensioned in the TOP VIEWS.
iii. Arrange the series of dimensions on a continuous line.
iv. Keep the dimensions outside of the drawings.
v. Always place a longer dimension outside a shorter one.
vi. Always place the angles outside the views of an object.
vii. Dimension lines should be spaced uniformly.
viii. Dimension lines should not touch the object. About 1.5mm gap should be
allowed.

CO-ORDINATE SYSTEMS
AIM:
To study about various co ordinate systems and to create simple figures like polygon, multiline figures, etc.
SOFTWARE USED:
Solid edge V20
DESCRIPTION:
Absolute coordinate system:-
Absolute coordinate systems are based on the UCS origin (0, 0) which is the intersection of
the X and Y axes. Use absolute coordinate when you know the precise X and Y value of the point.
Format:-
(Value of X, value of Y)
Relative coordinate system:-
Relative Co-Ordinates are based on the last point entered. Use relative co-ordinates when you
know the location of a point in relation to the previous point. To specify relative co-ordinates,
precedes the co-ordinate with a @ sign.
Format:-
@ (change in X, change in of Y)
Polar coordinate system:-
To use polar co-ordinates we have to specify a point, enter a distance and an angle separated
by an angle bracket (<)
Format:-
(Distance of line < angle of that line)

PROCEDURE:
1. Create a separate Directory for this drawing.
2. Make sheet setup by the option “sheet setup” and choose specification “A4 Sheet” and
remove the background also.
3. We have to chosen the “N-Sided Polygon” from “Run macros”
4. It shows dialog box. There are three options in the definition type from that we choose any
one of option.
5. Then to enter the value of “Flat Length” (i.e. 20mm) and number of polygon (no of sides: 6).
6. Wherever we want to click the polygon in the sheet.
7. Then save the file in the desired Directory.
RESULT:
Thus the various co-ordinate systems have been studied and simple figures like polygon and multi line objects are created.

Ex. No: 2 TITLE BLOCKDate :
AIM:To draw the specified title block with necessary text and projection symbol.
SOFTWARE USED:Solid edge V20
DESCRIPTION:
Title Block:
It is an important feature in the drawing. It should be placed at right hand bottom corner of
the sheet. The IS: 11665-1983 code gives the specification for the title block. The main
information is given in the title block by means of one or more rectangle and the rectangle may
be sub-divided into smaller boxes for providing specific information’s.
These rectangles are classified into,
1) Identification zone
2) Other zone (for additional information)
3) Identification zone gives the basic information about
a. Registration or Identification numbers
b. Title of the Drawing
c. Name of the legal owners of the Drawing
DRAWING OF TITLE BLOCK:
PROCEDURE:
1. Create a separate Directory for this drawing.
2. Make sheet setup by the option “sheet setup” and choose specification “A4 Sheet” and
remove the background also.
3. Select “Fit” command is used to refit the sheet to fully display it on the Screen.
4. Draw the rectangular by using the command such as line, offset, etc...
5. Create a title block for given dimension and type the text inside the block
Using text commands.
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Page 8
THE KAVERY ENGINEERING COLLEGE, MECHERI
6. Create the projection symbol by using the tool like line, circle, and centre line.
7. After completing the title block, to mention the dimension by using “smart
Dimension” and “distance between” dimension.
8. Then save the file in the desired Directory.
RESULT:
Thus standard Title blocks with specified dimensions along with projection symbols have
been drawn.

Ex. No: 3 DRAWING OF CURVESDate :
AIM:Drawings of various curves like parabola, spiral, and involutes using spline or cubic spline
command.
SOFTWARE USED:Solid edge V20
PROCEDURE:

3. Select “Fit” command is used to refit the sheet to fully display it on the Screen.
4. By using the “line” option we have to make a square spiral with an increasing length.
5. Then choose the option “convert to curve “which is given in window.
6. This option is for to convert the selection by three points to select all the line drawn.
7. After selection we can drag to the required range from the centre point of the all line
Steps in Drawing of parabola:
1. Draw a centre line using straight line of 150 mm.
2. Make a perpendicular line to its centre of length 75 mm.
3. Then by using the option “curve” draws a curve which connects all three points of
perpendicular line.
4. Mention the dimension by using “smart Dimension” and “distance between“
dimensions.
Steps in Drawing of involutes:
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Page 10
THE KAVERY ENGINEERING COLLEGE, MECHERI
1. Draw a circle of 50 mm diameter using the option “circle by centre”
2. Make 4 radiuses in the circle of 45˚ difference.
3. Use the option “Extent to Next” to make diameter.
4. Draw tangent to the circle
5. By using the option specified “Arc by centre” we have to draw involute for drawn circle.
6. Then save the file in the folder we created.
RESULT:
Thus the various curves like parabola, spiral and involutes have been drawn using spline
