I am so thrilled to have the warmer and longer days again for many reasons. One being the
near reality of gardening again. I’m especially excited for the NW berries.
Although we do use fresh vegetables in our menu year around, there’s nothing like the
abundance of ripe, vine picked produce right in our area. I also love the fresh herbs we receive from
some of the residents. Not only does it add a great finishing touch to our home made soup but there’s
something beautiful and communal about sharing and receiving from the garden.
Our fabulous team in the cafe is a joy to cook and learn new techniques from. I am grateful to
have such caring and committed people in the kitchen (including our volunteers). What astonishes
me is the fact that every employee in the kitchen has a willing attitude. Just last week, Rose offered a
new way of preparing a recipe she has been making for quite a while. The response was that it was
delicious! Kyle is putting his hard working creative culinary techniques to use every day he comes to
work and it sure shows. I’m proud to work with such a great team!
Our current regular volunteers are Esther Balchunas, Evelyn Long, Alice Werner, Rollie
Halberg and Renate Matzke. The friendship and help from our volunteers is a great part of the suc-
cess of the Cafe.

Happy Spring!
I sure love spring, don’t you? The days getting longer and warmer, the freshness in the air, the colors, budding trees and flowers all contribute to a lighter heart and mood! Easter is late this year and I am so happy for the extra weeks to prepare my church choir and orchestra for our Good Friday cantata. You are all invited to attend it on April 19th at Gresham United Methodist Church. Posters and flyers with all the details will be available in the community building. The entertainer for our Village birthday party in March was wonderful: Dick Harman and his “Revisiting Radio” brought back lots of memories for everyone who attended. Look for his return to The Village with more radio shows and fun facts from pre-TV years! Our new chime choir is off to a great start! We have a lot of fun together and are learning new skills to create beautiful harmonies and sounds. Drop by the community building Mondays between 3 and 4 to listen or join us! We have so many wonderful opportunities to connect with our neighbors here at The Village. I highly encourage you to challenge yourself to something new. The Bookworms book club could use some more readers to discuss the monthly book. Multnomah County Library Outreach will be bringing 10 copies of the book for the month and you can pick up a copy at the office. This month’s book looks delightful: “Little Heathens: Hard times and high spirits on an Iowan farm during the Great Depression.” Another great place to connect and enjoy time with each other is the “Let’s Do Art” group. Bring a personal art project to work on with others or come to get inspired or just visit. Hope you find some new things to try in this month’s newsletter! ~ Solveig

Dear Village Community,
As we move together into the Spring of the year, we have a lot of things to look forward to.
The Village is once again decked out for Spring and I do not think it an exaggeration to say that this
retirement community is one of the most beautiful in our country. We can also look forward to
Resurrection Sunday as we celebrate together the crowning event in the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
His death was painful and costly to Him and its benefits are free and eternal to us. What a Savior!
John 20: 26-31
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the
doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he
said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my
side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!’
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me you have believed; blessed are those who have
not seen and yet have believed.” Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this
book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and
that by believing you may have life in his name.
Love in Christ,
Pastor Bob

APRIL BIRTHDAYSAPRIL BIRTHDAYSAPRIL BIRTHDAYSAPRIL BIRTHDAYS
I picked up a new book last month which has helped me to see more things to be thank-
ful for. It can be easy to see the big things in life to be grateful for. This book has helped me to
see the li?le things, as well, the smile of a child, clean clothes and a washing machine that
works. Being grateful can help reduce stress, improves immunity, and helps one sleep
be?er. Join me this month finding large and small things to be grateful for.
“Gratude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns
denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a
house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratude makes sense of our past, brings peace for
today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” - Melody Bea e

The Village helps our communityThe Village helps our communityThe Village helps our communityThe Village helps our community Turning Lives is led by Clyde Yoshida and they conduct an outreach to our city’s
homeless population. Nancy Armintrout is helping Clyde’s ministry by collecting blankets to be distributed. The blankets may be new or used, but they
must be clean! Nancy is also collecting crochet yarn for someone who makes crochet dolls which are distributed to children in need at Davis School in Rockwood.
If you have either of these items to be donated, please contact: Nancy Armintrout at 503-312-6749.
Dear Residents,
Spring is here and it is nice to have the worst of the cold weather behind us. It is nice to have the changing seasons to keep us thankful for the variety of life's experiences. I wanted to remind you of our policy regarding trips on Transportation Day -Wednesdays. In order to be able to take advantage of our reduced rate for that day, you must make arrangements for the trip before Tuesday at 2:00 pm. Otherwise the trip will need to be charged on a per mile basis like we do on other days. Of course "other conditions apply" also. If you have any questions, please contact us and/or read about it in our Helpful Information Guide. I appreciate the response to my letter regarding the importance of our lifeline service. We have had some additional participants sign up and others that have re-newed their efforts to wear their pendants. If you were impressed to add this protection to your life, please do not put off signing up for the service. Just call us and we will get the process started for you. Lifeline usually charges a setup fee to start the service, but if you signed up in March or will sign up in April The Village will pay that additional amount for you if you sign up before the end of April. Please make use of this wonderful service. The remodels are progressing well with many more being started. There are so many changes going on right now, that I will not list them all, and if I did they might change anyway, but be sure to watch for the list of new residents so you can welcome your new neighbors. The remodels we are currently working on are #'s 33, 66, 38, and 74. Since I am usually here in the building, I have the privilege of hearing our Chime Choir practicing. It is so nice to hear residents making music together. They are doing a wonderful job. We are looking forward to their first performance in the future. As I eat at restaurants and other public places, I am so happy that we have such good food service right here in our Village Cafe. It is hard to match the choices and the quality of food that we serve every day here for lunch in our own cafe. Be sure and make it a part of your routine. If you don't feel up to coming down, we can bring your meal to you. Just give us a call. Our Thankfulness wall question this month is “What are you grateful for this month?” Stop by and share your thoughts and read what others have written.
Have a great April,
Dennis
