• With global societal needs escalating, future weather, climate, water and related environmental products and services will require significant targeted improvements.

• The definition of the role of CAgM in the 1999 vision document as a “Statement of Need” was designed with a view to the 21st century and to serve the future goals of CAgM.

The vision statement:

“to promote agrometeorology and agrometeorologicalapplications for efficient, sustainable food, fodder and fibre production for an increasing world population in fastlychanging environments”.

• The draft WMO Strategic Plan for agrometeorologyfocuses on improving support systems, including evaluation of impacts of climate variability/change and natural disasters to vulnerable sectors to communities and decision making for sustainability;

• The Management Group and Secretariat have devised a CAgM Operational Plan;

• Key Outcomes and Deliverables have been identified

(a) Applications of meteorology to the management of agriculture, forestry, livestock and fisheries sectors (herein after referred to as sub-sectors), taking into account developments both in the scientific and practical fields;

(b) Assisting the Member countries in developing and establishing their agrometeorological services through transfer of knowledge, methodologies, and techniques and by providing advice in particular on: (i) The most practical use of knowledge concerning weather and climate for sustainable agricultural management through conservation and better use of natural resources;(ii) The use of weather, climate, and agrometeorological forecasts and warnings for operational purposes;(iii) Adaptation to climate variability and change, in particular in developing countries;(iv)The combating of unfavourable influences of weather and climate on agriculture and animal husbandry, including weather-related pests and diseases; (v) The protection of agricultural produce in storage or in transit against damage or deterioration due to the direct and indirect influences of weather and climate;

(c) Developing mechanisms through which users of weather and climate information in sub-sectors can liaise actively with weather and climate service providers and vice versa;

(d) Formulating data and information requirements for agricultural purposes;

(e) Using effective communication methods for disseminating agrometeorological information, advice and warnings to sub-sectors and obtaining feedback;

(f) Promoting a better understanding of the interactions betweenweather, climate, drought and desertification.

– Has three Expected Results (ER 3, ER 4 and ER 5)– ER 3: Enhanced capabilities of Members to produce better weather, climate,

water and related environmental information, prediction and warnings to support in particular climate impact and adaptation strategies(4KOs)

– ER4:Enhanced capabilities of Members to access, develop, implement and use integrated and interoperable surface-based and space-based systems for weather, climate and hydrological observations, as well as related environmental observations, based on world standards set by WMO(3KOs.
