JUTE is very proud to be co-producing this work with the terrific new Company Courage Works. This play was premiered by Sydney Theatre Company and Griffin Theatre Company in 2010. Till 11 Aug Contributing Life Conversations - What’s important to you in having a meaningful life? “When we talk about a contributing life, we mean a fulfilling life – recognising that those people who live with mental health difficulties want and need the same things as everyone else.” National Mental Health Commissioner Janet Meagher. What are Contributing Life Conversations? From Monday 22 July to Sunday 11 August we hope you will be one of many people meeting in homes, workplaces, café’s, parks and public spaces around Australia to have a ‘Contributing Life Conversation’. These conversations will be about sharing what ‘A Contributing Life’ means to you, and those close to you, and discussing what gives each of our lives meaning and purpose. The conversation will be based on four simple questions, designed to take less than an hour. This initiative is part of the National Mental Health Commission’s National Contributing Life Project, and will help build a rounded picture of people’s lives and experiences. The Commission will use this and other information to help drive meaningful improvement for the mental health and wellbeing of all Australians. It will also inform our 2013 National Report Card on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention to be released in November 2013. Why should I get involved? Hosting a Contributing Life Conversation is your chance to be part of this important national conversation on mental health and wellbeing. Anyone can get involved. You might have personal experience of mental health issues. You might have experience of supporting and caring for a family member or close friend with mental health issues. You might work or volunteer in mental health or a related field. Or, you might simply be someone who is eager to see better mental health in the community. Visit www.contributinglife.com.au/conversations to register or find out more. We hope you can join the conversation. 2 Aug INVITATION to Community members and Service providers. Please take some time to contribute to the review of the Mental Health Act 2000, 2 – 4pm, GHD, 85 Spence St, 3rd Floor, Daintree Room, Cairns, Videolink by arrangement. The Department of Health is reviewing the Mental Health Act. Information is available at www.getinvolved.qld.gov.au The first of two rounds of consultation is now underway, with submissions closing 23 August 2013. The purpose of this consultation is to identify issues with the current Act, and suggested solutions. The review team is collaborating with the Cairns AMHS to arrange a workshop for non-Government organisations and other stakeholders with an interest in the Act. The aim of the workshop will be to help the review team gain an understanding of the issues, but more importantly to provide the opportunity for interested people to hear and discuss each other’s views to assist them in formulating their submissions. It is hoped that the ideas raised in the workshop will continue to be discussed by workshop participants afterwards, resulting in high quality submissions that not only identify issues, backed up by statistics and/or case studies, but also propose well-developed legislative solutions. After 23 August, the review team will conduct further research into each issue, and prepare a discussion paper detailing the issues and the advantages and disadvantages of each suggested amendment, and making recommendations. That discussion paper will be the subject of the second round of consultation. Please rsvp to Nada Wiley, Mental Health Act Review Team, by Friday 26 July email: [email protected] phone: 3328 9674

25 – 27 Nov 2013 National Indigenous Health Conference in Cairns - The Conference is designed to bring together both government and non-government agencies who are working in the field of Indigenous health with the belief that working together can close the gap between the state of Indigenous Health as compared to the health of mainstream Australians. It is envisage that 200 to 300 delegates will attend the 2013 National Indigenous Health Conference. For many years, the provision of Aboriginal health services had been broken and fragmented when it comes to delivery of primary health services. There were government providers and grassroots communities’ Aboriginal medical services where in many cases, duplication of services occurred. However over time, service providers have joined forces in not just the physical provision of services but also in such fields as research, health education and even the training of staffs in order to improve Indigenous health, in general. This gathering will highlight some of the existing indigenous health programs currently implemented in Aboriginal communities and provide a unique opportunity for delegates and speakers to see the power of people networking together in one place, at one time with similar goals and exchange information regarding the successes and challenges that workers involve in implementing Aboriginal health programs faced. Hence, we encourage grassroots communities to participate and present their existing, successful programs during the event.
