Nominee Selection Criteria

REPRESENTING THE SCHOOL IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION REQUIRES AN ONGOING COMMITMENT

THROUGHOUT YEAR 12. RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN EACH POSITION VARY BUT ALL REQUIRE A

COMMITMENT OF TIME AND EFFORT.

STUDENTS WILL NEED TO CONSIDER HOW THEY WILL COPE WITH BALANCING THE DEMANDS OF

STUDY AND THE TIME REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFULLY REPRESENT THE SCHOOL.

For ALL Leadership Positions:

• Attendance (regular attendance in all classes). Students must have 92% attendance as at 30

August and all absences must be explained or authorised. Please attach Attendance Report from

Student Services.

• Achievement in all subjects (Report Cards for 2015 attached to Nomination Sheet)

(Students cannot have a D, E or NA for Achievement, Behaviour or Effort)

• All outstanding after school detentions completed – check with Student Services to ensure these

are complete

• School Uniform standard, grooming and presentation (well groomed hair and facial hair)

• Students should be able to show a record of wearing correct uniform everyday

• Respect for self, others and the environment

• Caring and cooperative

• Consistency of behaviour, attitude and attendance

• Active participation in extra curricula activities within school and community

Selection of Senior Leadership Positions

Selection of senior leaders is based upon:

1. Curriculum Vitae (word processed) and application package

2. Election Speech- 1-2 Minutes in length (Inter-year Leaders do not have to give a speech)

3. Voting by Staff and Students

4. Interviews for all nominees

Roles of positions and expectations are detailed in this document. Please see Mrs Toppin or Miss

White for any further information or if you have any questions.

NOTE:

• Students may only hold one leadership position. The reasons for this are:

- To give many students leadership experience

- To ensure that students do not become ‘overloaded’ with a resulting drop in academic results

for those students.

• Students on Cancellation of Enrolment Process cannot apply for Senior Leadership positions.

• Students who have been suspended in Semester 2 of Year 11 cannot apply for a Senior

Leadership position.

• Late submissions will not be accepted. Students can nominate for several positions and withdraw

if they are successful in one position.

• Senior Leaders must represent the school well both in the school and wider community.

• Senior Leaders must follow School Code of Conduct and Dress Code at all times and have no

uniform breach records.

• If placed on Cancellation of Enrolment Process or Suspension, Leaders may lose their leadership

position.

Selection of School Captains

Roles and Responsibilities

In responding to the selection criteria applicants should address in writing their ability to successfully

carry out the following duties / responsibilities.

• Be accessible and in touch with the student community and their concerns.

• Accepting responsibilities which contribute to the success of school activities.

• Represent the school at functions in the community.

• Attend school functions.

• Attend community functions as school representatives.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

• Prepare and present speeches for school and community functions.

• Address students, staff and community if requested.

• Initiate or be involved with worthwhile activities.

• Help with guided tours of the school for guests and visitors.

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.

• Attend meetings regularly.

• Be involved with and encourage other students to participate in community service e.g. Red Shield

Appeal and P&C Quiz Night.

• School Captains, Vice Captains, House Captains and Senior Leaders must attend Student Council

meetings once a fortnight.

• Be involved with presenting and organising Presentation Night.

• Show effective management and leadership.

• Participate in student surveys.

• Must participate in Lions Youth of the Year Quest in 2016.

Guidelines for Election Speech

• Maximum of 2 minutes.

• State which leadership position you are nominating for.

• Talk about the strengths of Cairns State High School.

• Outline what your goals will be as a Leader i.e. What you will do if elected.

• Outline your efforts supporting the aspect of International Mindedness at Cairns High.

• The curricular and extra-curricular activities that you have been involved in.

• How you propose to be a positive Role Model e.g. Sun Safety Policy, Bullying Policy.

• How you will assist students and staff.

• What leadership activities you have already done?

Students must address the following criteria in nominating for leadership positions. In addressing the

criteria please respond to each criteria (if possible) in DOT POINTS submitting no more than one typed

A4 page (approximately 400 words).

Please attach copies of Report Cards for 2015 (which includes attendance records) and other

Certificates as examples of meeting the criteria.

School Captain Criteria

1. List the ‘qualities’ you have which would make you a good Senior Leader in 2016.

2. Outline any leadership ‘tasks’ which you have been involved in already e.g. public speaking,

community involvement, team captain, participation in school and community events.

3. Describe the skills you have or believe you can develop in taking on your preferred leadership

position.

4. Outline the curricular and extra-curricular activities you have been involved in.

5. Please rate the following as Good, Satisfactory or Needs Development:

(a) your attendance (include attendance percentage e.g. 95%)

(b) your behaviour

(c) your attitude

(d) your reliability

(e) your punctuality

(f) your participation and involvement in school and/or community activities

Selection of Sports House Captains

Nominated students must present a short speech (1-2 minutes max) to Year 11 students.

Roles and Responsibilities

SOCIAL JUSTICE SENIOR LEADER

Roles and Responsibilities

• Be involved with the peer support group and other groups in the school.

• Liaise with students through student council, senior leaders and other groups so concerns can be

voiced.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

• Maintain communication between students and staff, Social Justice Committee with regards to

concerns and suggested ideas.

• Be supportive to the general needs of students.

• Regularly attend Social Justice Committee meetings.

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.

• Assist with planning and organising Harmony Day.

CULTURAL SENIOR LEADER

Roles and Responsibilities

• Advocate on behalf of the Performing Arts and Art students and create a culture and environment

where all students can flourish at Cairns State High School.

• Work with teachers, coordinators and the HODs to communicate a vision for the Performing Arts

and Art Departments.

• Build cohesive teams and work collaboratively with others to achieve goals and meet timelines.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Communicate your passion and enthusiasm for Performing Arts and Art projects to students, staff,

parents and the community.

• Share the hosting role at functions and contribute to event management of major projects and

presentations.

• Lead, motivate, organise and encourage students within all Performing Arts and Art activities.

• Represent the school at community events involving the Performing Arts and Art.

• Attend Performing Arts and Art events, advertising events at parades and writing articles for Post

Ed.

INDIGENOUS SENIOR LEADER Roles and Responsibilities

The role of the Indigenous Senior Leader is to advocate on behalf of the Indigenous population at

Cairns State High School.

• Represent the Indigenous student body within the Senior Leader group.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Assist with the planning and operation of Diversity Day, National Reconciliation Week and Naidoc

Week.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

• Act as a mentor for Indigenous students.

• Participate in Senior Leader meetings, formal parades and school functions.

• Encourage Indigenous student participation in extra-curricular activities e.g. Musicals, Sports

Carnivals, Rock Eisteddfods and Charity Appeals.

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

INTERNATIONAL SENIOR LEADER Roles and Responsibilities

The role of the International Senior Leader is open to overseas fee paying students enrolled as

international students through Education Queensland International (EQI). However, if no fee paying

applicant nominates or is deemed to be suitable it is open to any student with an interest and

willingness to advocate on behalf of international students.

• Advocating on behalf of international students at Cairns SHS.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Working closely with the International Student Coordinator to assist with orientation and school

transition of international students new to Cairns SHS.

• Representing the international student body at formal parades, the Student Leader group, visiting

agent familiarisation tours and community events as required.

• Encouraging international students to take part in extra-curricular activities.

• Assist with the planning and organisation of Harmony Day

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Maintain communication between students and staff, Environmental Committee and Student

Council.

• Develop, initiate and promote environmental policies within the school.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Encourage participation in environmental events (P&C Working Bees).

• Coordinate the Year 8 Environmental Awareness Day.

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.

• Coordinate volunteers for school working bees.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

COMMUNITY SERVICE SENIOR LEADER

Roles and Responsibilities

• Maintain communication between students and staff and Student Council.

• Develop, initiate and promote community service within the school.

• Encourage participation in community events (eg. Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal).

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

• To establish a sense of responsibility amongst students by the provision of the opportunity for

students from all year levels to participate in many worthwhile activities.

• To organise fundraising by the school for the general community.

• To organise fundraising for the benefit of the school community.

• Recruit helpers for the P&C Monster Oval Markets

• Be a role model for other students in all areas including behaviour, dress and attitude.

• Be actively involved in encouraging a strong school spirit.

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.

ORCHESTRA SENIOR LEADER

Roles and Responsibilities

The Orchestra leader will be a player of the highest quality, experienced in working cooperatively with

musicians within their section and other section principals. They will have the interpersonal skills

needed to work with a range of musicians, inspiring and mentoring them to achieve outstanding

results. • Serve as a liaison between the orchestra and the Conductor, Director of Strings and the Music

Coordinator.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

• Be a role model for the section by showing exemplary behaviour at all times.

• Arrive early to rehearsals and assist with the set-up of the ensemble.

• Be prepared to take sectionals for any of the string sections.

• Prepare and play the first part of the section and relevant solos of the repertoire, lead and direct

the section.

• Lead the first violin section.

• Be an ambassador for the Orchestra at school and community events throughout the year.

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.

SCHOOL PROMOTIONS SENIOR LEADER Roles and Responsibilities

The primary role of the School Promotions Senior Leader is to promote all positive aspects of life as a

Cairns High student to students, parents and the Cairns High wider community. Responsibilities

include:

• Promoting positive aspects of life as a Cairns High students and the Cairns High Learner Profile:

− Within the Student Leader group

− At formal parades

− Marketing and community events

• Participating in processes related to the Council of International Schools international

accreditation processes

• Assisting with school based media activities

− Writing Post Ed articles for senior leader activities and other significant school activities.

Submitting these with accompanying photos.

− Writing articles on behalf of the Senior Leader team for inclusion in Bulldog Bulletin.

Submitting these with accompanying photos.

− Providing photos and comments for inclusion on facebook, foyer LCD screen

• Organising and collating responses for a THEY SAY section in the Bulldog Bulletin. (This would

involve identifying topic, getting this approved by DP Marketing, canvasing student responses and

collating).

• Assisting with media visits i.e. being prepared to speak about students activities or views on the

activity being focused on.

• Encouraging students to take part in extra-curricular activities e.g. promote on parades, daily

student notices.

• Wearing correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set good examples.

GUIDELINES FOR ALL APPLICANTS

Guidelines for Election Speech (all applicants) • Maximum of 2 minutes.

• State which leadership position you are nominating for.

• Talk about the strengths of Cairns State High School.

• Outline what your goals will be as a Leader i.e. What you will do if elected.

• The curricular and extra-curricular activities that you have been involved in.

• Outline your efforts in supporting the aspect of International mindedness at Cairns High

• How you propose to be a positive Role Model e.g. Sun Safety Policy.

• How you will assist students and staff.

• What leadership activities you have already done?

DELIVERY OF SPEECH AND APPEARANCE WILL BE CONSIDERED.

Guidelines for Written Application Students must address the following criteria in nominating for leadership positions. In addressing the

criteria please respond to each criteria (if possible) in DOT POINTS submitting no more than one typed

A4 page (approximately 400 words).

Please attach copies of Report Cards for 2014 (which includes attendance records) and other

Certificates as examples of meeting the criteria.

Senior Leader Criteria 1. Outline your involvement in extra-curricular activities (school and community)

2. Describe the attributes or characteristics you believe you possess, which would make you a

suitable Senior Leader

3. Outline any leadership ‘tasks’ which you have been involved in already e.g. public speaking,

community involvement, team captain, participation in school and community events.

4. Describe the skills you have or believe you can develop in taking on your preferred leadership

position.

5. Please rate the following as Good, Satisfactory or Needs Development:

(a) your reliability

(b) your punctuality

(c) you as a member of a team

(d) your behaviour

(e) your attitude

SELECTION OF INTER-YEAR LEADERS

Roles and Responsibilities The role of the Inter-year leader is to assist the Year 7s throughout their first year of secondary school.

Roles and responsibilities include:

• Participation in processes related to the Council of International Schools.

• Be aware of the Cairns High Guiding Statement.

• Involvement in student activities.

• Involvement in extra-curricular activities, in particular Year 7 extra-curricular activities (Handball

competition).

• Assistance with Year 7 transition days.

• Achievement in all Subjects.

• Attitude/Behaviour (both in class and around the school).

• Attendance.

• Reliability.

• Good organisational skills.

• Good ambassador for school.

• Ability to operate as part of a team.

• Wear correct uniform at all times as stated in the uniform policy and set an exemplary standard.
