Happy New Year!

We seldom schedule a baptism service on New Year’s Eve Sunday morning, but I am so glad we did! Nicole St Pere, daughter of Susan Cal, embraced our youth ministry consistently during her years at West Brook High School and just completed her first semester at The University of Texas in Austin. This past fall, she was active in a church in Austin and increasingly felt God’s activity in her life. She contacted me as the se-mester was ending and expressed her desire to share publicly with our church family her profession of faith and request for baptism. She made her decision pub-licly at the end of morning worship on Christmas Eve and we joyfully baptized her the following Sunday morn-ing, December 31. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve seldom fall on Sundays, but this year our services were made even more powerful due to Nicole following the leadership of God’s Spirit in her life. Pray for Nicole and all of our college students as they continue their studies and embrace God’s leadership in their journey of faith. I look forward with you to the arrival of Sister Carol Per-ry this weekend. As our 2018 Scholar-in-Residence for January 7, 8, and 9, Sister Carol will lead us in a study of the Book of Acts entitled, “Faith for the Road.” We invite our adult Sunday School classes to meet in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, January 7, at 9:15 a.m. for our Bible study hour that Carol will lead (your class records will be in the Fellowship Hall). Carol will preach in morning worship and lecture each evening, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday from 6:00 – 7:45 p.m. with a re-freshment break. Sister Carol is lodging with her dear friends, Bill and Dot McKinley, but if you want to host her for a meal, please let me know. She readily shares that her needs are modest, so we will work with her to provide the kind of hosting that is best for her. Sister Carol endeared herself to us during her service last year as our Scholar-in-Residence. She shares a lovely faith journey and has spent almost all of her adult life studying the Bible and teaching others how to mine the gems of Holy Scripture. An active member of The Sisters of Ursula, she took a vow of poverty when she became a nun, so our honorarium goes to support her Order. Carol has visited our community each of the last twenty years as a visiting Bible Scholar for Holy Family Retreat Center of the Diocese of Beaumont. We wel-come her again eagerly to our church. I hope you will be able to join me and invite others to attend!
