Pope Francis on Family and CommunityIn order to maintain this reality of the assembly of Jesus in today’s situation, it is indispensable to renew the covenant between the family and the Christian community. We could say that the family and the parish are the two places where the communion of love, which finds its ultimate source in God, takes place. A Church truly according to the Gospel cannot but take the form of a hospitable home, with its doors open, always.

From the Papal General Audience address on the Bonds between the Family and the Christian Community,

September 9, 2015.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION CLASS TIME: A friendly reminder that Christian Formation classes for both K-5 and EDGE begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. In order for the students to get the most out of the weekly lesson plans, class needs to begin on time. Please drop off your child(ren) on time, so that opening prayer can begin at 9:30 a.m. Please also remember to pick up promptly at 10:45 a.m. Late sign-outs hinder Catechists’ ability to attend Mass. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter. Let’s work together to make this a fantastic year for Christian Formation!

WINTER WATCH 2016: The dates are set for Winter Watch 2016. We will host the homeless from Wednesday, February 24 to Wednesday, March 2. To all you wonderful volunteers who make this week happen, please mark your calendars. We have entertainment every evening for our guests and are looking for a magician this year. If you know someone who can do a few magic tricks, please contact Connie Nowak at (757) 971-3043. Thank you!

There were about 300 participants for the two days. It is such a pleasure to watch these athletes play who are always smiling and cheering one another. They just seem to play for the game and not who wins because they are all winners; they are indeed special people. Congratulations go out to who those who participated in this wonderful event. Thanks also to Greg Hayes and Greg Brown for being the lead on this wonderful event and thanks to those Knights who helped.

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” How is Christ calling you to share His eternal words of salvation? Consider a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life. Contact Father Michael Boehling at 804-359-5661 or e-mail [email protected].

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH” The Gospels challenge, even demand, that we change our outlook on life as well as our behaviors. One of the difficult demands, I think, is to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us. We are called to think and live according to the way Jesus taught and lived. It is not always comfortable or convenient to follow this way; Jesus’ words often are not what we would like to hear. So, too, the climate change crisis makes demands for a change of life style. Jesus did not address this issue because in His day it was not a problem. However, Pope Francis has spoken on the matter calling us to change our ways in our treatment of the Earth. These changes may strike us as problematic or difficult and definitely not practical; similar to how we may view the way of Jesus. A couple examples are: giving greater attention to how we spend our funds to avoid following the way of consumerism; taking greater interest in where the money we invest is used to avoid indirectly promoting the destruction of our Earth (for instance, investing in corporations that fund projects like “fracking” or mountain top removal). As Pope Francis states, a change of heart and mind is needed. Where do we start this change? Besides prayer, we need to work at considering our Earth and all of God’s creation, creatures great and small, as we are all dependent on each other.

“Lord, teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature.”

Laudato Si, Pope Francis Ed Marroni (587-4887) – Holy Family Parish Environmental Committee
