From the Principal Exciting News You will be pleased to hear that we have obtained a grant to upgrade our netball and basketball courts. The grant does not quite cover the cost of both courts but School Council decided to put extra funds towards the cost to ensure we could complete the entire project. This will mean that we will be able to resurface the courts with artificial turf including permanent marking for various sports. We are also planning to install a new Prep playground between the Music Room and the Prep buildings. I am in the process of making a display of the projects in the main corridor. Please come in and have a look. I am sure you will be impressed. We are planning to use our fund raising money to cover the cost of the new playground and to make up the shortfall in the netball/basketball court project. So far this year we have raised $1525.00. Junior School Council have become involved and they are running a ‘Guess the Jelly Bean’ competition. It would be great to have everyone support us in our fundraising endeavours. This year it’s all about the children’s play facilities- a very popular choice! NAPLAN Every year the school participates in a National testing program that assesses students in Year 3 and 5 in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar and Numeracy. The children complete the tests at school and these papers are sent in to the Department to be marked. The results are then aggregated and compared with all other schools’ results and the children get a comparable rating in all of those areas. The dates for the NAPLAN tests this year are Tuesday 9th, Wednesday10th and Thursday 11th of May. Attitude to School Survey Every year we participate in a survey collecting data on children’s attitudes to school. Traditionally this has been for Years 5 and 6 but this year Year 4 will be involved. The children fill in an anonymous survey with numerous questions about school and their attitudes towards learning as well as their general wellbeing. The surveys are sent in to the Department of Education who collate the data and compare it with other schools. The school subsequently receives a report that assists us to address any issues or concerns that may arise.

Prep 2018 Information Night Next Tuesday is our Prep Information Night for those parents of children who are starting school in

2018. If you have a child who is ready for school next year, please come along. If you know of anyone else who is looking for a school next year

could you please let them know. Our list of enrolments is growing rapidly; if you need an enrolment form please let us know and we can send

one home.

Physical Education Grade 5/6 Interschool sport – Term 2 schedule amendment A notice went home last week with all Grade 5/6 students regarding two schedule changes to the Term 2 season. The changes include: Our round 1 match will now be against Oxley College (Home game) on Friday 28th April. The other change is that our round 5 match on Friday 2nd June against Lilydale PS will now be a Home game (as we already played them Away this term). Please make a note of these changes. A notice went home late last week informing families of the sports uniform requirements for Winter 5/6 sport. Note – There is no softball team this season. Uniform requirements are as follows: AFL – CPPS or CPFC jersey, dark shorts (no pockets), footy boots (recommended) or runners, mouth-guard is compulsory (no exceptions). Netball – CPPS sport uniform, runners/netball shoes, player bibs distributed for each match, mouth-guard recommended. Volleyball – CPPS sport uniform, runners. Soccer – CPPS sport uniform, soccer boots (recommended) or runners, shin guards will be distributed for each match, mouth-guard highly recommended. Students should come to school with a spare set of clothes (CPPS uniform) and shoes to change into fol-lowing the match. Disrtict Cross Country – Tuesday 30th May A notice will be distributed this week to the top 10 placegetters in each 9/10, 11 and 12/13 year old race from House Cross Country last term, informing them of their invitation to compete at the District Cross Country Championships on 30th May at Lilydale Lake. If your child placed in the top 10 but does NOT want to compete at District, please inform me ASAP, so an emergency runner can be put into the team. Hoop time 2017 Once again this year all Grade 3-6 students have the chance to compete in Hoop time, a whole day basketball tournament/round robin (Kilsyth Basketball Stadium). In class students have indicated whether they are interested in taking part or not. There are separate days for Grade 3/4 (junior) students and Grade 5/6 (senior) students. The dates have not been finalised yet but I have requested late in Term 2, and the middle of Term 3 for the respective Hoop time days. More information will be announced soon. ANZAC REFLECTIONS Blood Today I heard blood thirsty soldiers crying for safety. Now there’s only a couple hundred people left. I am the only one here. With them. The other side came running to check if anyone had survived. I was just in the corner: suffering, crying, worried. I made the worst choice in my life: I surrendered. I yelled “Mercy!” at them. I’m a prisoner now. Help me… By Summer T War Poem I hear the cries of the other suffering soldiers. My ears are flowing with shock from all the guns. Me and the rest of the soldiers’ bodies are crumbling from exhaustion. I feel the pain inside the other soldiers. Drips of blood pour down on me. I see a golden bullet roaring towards my friend. I jump, the bullet hits my arm. I collapse to the ground. I wake up two hours later. In prison. By Jake War I hear the cry of army men. I feel my broken heart cracking into pieces. I see the wounded come out. I smell dribbling blood and death. I touch the wounded. Their mums will feel horrified. By Micah

Sewing club This term students are making ‘Darla, the Dear’. Today they learnt how to lay out their material, pin the pattern on and we discussed fabric grain. It was quite amusing when one student said, “ there is only one ear”, we then discussed you may only have one pattern piece but you need to cut out two. Any student who wishes to join needs to see Mrs Wadsworth.
