PRINCIPALS’ REPORT
Staffing News Congratulations to Renae Simpson who was recently appointed to an advertised vacancy at Wyndham Vale PS in Werribee. Renae is moving to live in Geelong so this is a far more convenient school for her to teach at. We will miss Renae at Essex Heights next year, but wish her well for this new opportunity. I would also like to let the community know that Anita Dix will teach her last day next Friday, November 13
th before
beginning her Family Leave. We offer our best wishes to Anita and husband Lachie for the impending birth of their first child. A very exciting time! I have already communicated to the parents of 6D that we are very pleased to have Chris Cavill to replace Anita for the remainder of the year. Chris has been on staff at Essex Heights for several years in an Education Support role. During that time he has completed his teaching qualifications and during Term 4 has been working regularly as a Casual Replacement Teacher. It is good to welcome Chris back in this changed role.
Essex Heights Carnival As we enter the final countdown to our first Essex Heights carnival (only 16 days to go) I would urge you to keep an eye on the various notices, bulletins and website updates. Where there are requests for help, please consider supporting and helping to make this a fantastic community event and fundraiser.
ISSUE 34
5th November,
2015
Please check out the school website, and the Carnival Facebook page for details including the ‘early bird’ ride tickets. We would also like to invite your families support in publicising the Carnival by taking bundles of flyers for distribution in your street or neighbourhood. Please see the table at the front gate after school this week, tick off an area and take a bundle of flyers for the letterbox drop. A great way to keep fit and support the school!
Class Visit – 5P I enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with Con Papanicolaou and the children of 5P yesterday. The children have been recently introduced to a process known as ‘reciprocal reading’. This program supports them in the process of reading and sharing thoughts and ideas on allocated novels. The children each take a role during the session and help lead and focus their discussion on their shared novel. These roles include; Leader, Questioner, Summariser & Predictor. I was able to work alongside three groups and was really impressed with the way they worked together, engaged with the story they were reading and the insights they gained. This developing of independence in the children is also an important strategy as they prepare for their transition to secondary education in 2017. My thanks to Con for his great work in building these important skills in the children, and for his positive contribution to the Yr 5/6 Team.
The Importance of Sleep I found this interesting article recently in The Australian and share some thoughts here for your information. An early bedtime may lead to healthier children and happier mums. A STUDY of 3600 Australian children aged four to nine found a bedtime for younger children may be more important than a long sleep. The children who went to bed before 8:30pm had better health-related quality of life than those children who were late to sleep. The mothers of the early sleepers also reported better mental health. "So mums and dads, getting kids to bed early is not just great for them. It's good for you too," said lead researcher Dr Jon Quach. "These benefits were seen in all early-to-bed kids regardless of whether they woke early or slept late." Another study has shown benefits of early bedtimes that extend into adolescence. A University of South Australia study of 2200 children found those aged nine to 16 who went early to bed and got up early were more likely to have smaller waistlines. "The late sleepers were considerably more likely to be obese, have a poorer diet, get more screen time and less physical activity than other kids," said lead researcher Professor Tim Olds. - The Australian, 22 Oct 2015
