Holy Family Day School:Wise men and shepherds came to see him. In a town filled with chaos, in an unlikely stable, the savior of the world was born. We hope that in the midst of today’s chaotic, messy, war-torn world, you and your families, neighbors, friends are able to come together and find moments of happiness and wonder during this very special season of Christmas.
Art Exhibit: National Catholic Schools Week:During the last week of January, the Day School will celebrate National Catholic Schools week and hold our Annual Student Art Exhibit. This event leads up to our open enrollment weekend for the 2017-2018 school year. Registration opens to currently enrolled families first to ensure continuity for the following year.
Then, on the weekend of February 4/5, registration will open to the Parish to give you access to the limited student spaces created by Day school’s low student to teacher ratios. The excellent staff, whole child development philosophy, and Christian environment, create a highly sought after, individualized school where children come first.
Shortly after Parish registration, we will open our roster to the public if space permits. If you would like to schedule a tour in January, please call the office at 757-481-1180. The Day School offers class from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for students ages 30 months through Kindergarten. You may visit our website for further details at www.holyfamilydayschool.org.
HOLIDAY SALE:Synclair’s Outdoor Café, a children’s book written by parishioner Nanci Mayo, is on sale at Holy Family. Books are available in the Parish Office. One book for $15.00, two for $25.00, plus tax. 100% of the profits will go to Holy Family’s Building Project.
Can you give of your time to help the youngest members of our parish family?
This nursery is vital for the success of our Christian Formation, RCIA, and Adult Formation programs. Please contact Tiffany in the parish office or email [email protected] if you are interested in this ministry.

Weekly Wisdom
We conclude our Parts of the Mass and pray that you have been enriched by this information. May your families be abundantly blessed during this Christmas season and New Year.
Closing RiteThe closing rite is still an important part of the liturgy, for it allows us to ready ourselves to continue our lives as Christians in the world and as witnesses to Christ. We receive the blessing from the celebrant, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The congregation responds with Amen. At this point, the Mass is ended to go in peace. This is a sending forth, a commission to take the liturgy and its meaning and make it part of our lives. The final song gives us an end to our celebration.
“CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players:”Bishop Robert Barron’s “CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players” showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization. Journey with Bishop Barron beginning Sunday, January 22, (between the Masses) or the following Mondays, at 7:00 p.m., to explore the lasting influence of these Pivotal Players. Cost is $25.00. Registration forms can be found on the parish website, the Parish Office, or in the Family Room.
Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147.

Thanks to the runners and walkers of last year’s 5K Run/Walk for Haiti. The Proceeds of the Run/Walk support the Just Haiti coffee Co-op. The Holy Family Haiti committee has started selling fair-trade coffee from Just Haiti Coffee.
Next spring, 25 families from our twinning parish in Baptiste Haiti will start growing fair trade coffee on their land. The coffee will be sold to Just Haiti Coffee Co-op, shipped to Miami, Florida, and sold directly to distributors like The Church of the Holy Family. The Haiti Committee of Holy Family will pay for an agronomist to train the growers for the first year. Growers will obtain microloans to purchase plants and tools.
Just Haiti has seven partnerships and Holy Family and Baptiste will be their eighth. The Haiti Committee is excited to build this sustainable economic relationship with the people of Baptiste. Look for more information in future bulletins and look out for more free trade coffee to be sold at Holy Family Church.
If you have any questions, please contact Alfie Martinez-Coyle or Ruthie Forehand.

“CREATION CARE CORNER” Climate change by human activity is one of those issues that involves the fields of Science, Politics, the Economy, and Religion/Spirituality. Science, I believe, has the authority and means to determine how credible it is. Yet, some skepticism is in circulation and has influenced a segment of our population.
The oil industry, along with those corporations associated with it, have made huge profits from fossil fuel and have invested a huge amount of money towards convincing people to believe that the idea of climate change being human activated is a hoax. Edward O. Wilson, a professor emeritus at Harvard University and a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner has stated in an essay “the extinction rate our behavior is imposing, and seems destined to continue imposing, on the rest of life is more correctly viewed as the equivalent of an asteroid strike played out over several human generations.” (Sierra, 1, 2017)
Can we let these opposing views be an excuse for us not to change our lives and live more simply? Each of us has the responsibility to decide what to do.
On Sunday, January 15, the Parish Environmental Committee is planning to have a speaker from the Hampton Roads Sanitation Department to address the topic of efforts being made to mitigate flooding in our area. The presentation will take place between the 8:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. liturgies. The talk will focus on the experiment being conducted by the HRSD to build up the aquifer by injecting 20 million gallons of treated water into the ground. More information will be coming.
