PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

SURVEYThere has been a survey sent out on behalf of Gulgong Public School asking for community consultation. If you can spare 5 mins to fill this out and tell us about the job we are doing here at Gulgong. The process is anonymous so all answers are private and will help shape the directions of the school.

This week at school our focus will be Organisation.

It is important for students to be organised at school for their learning to progress. This means, students need to take responsibility for where they are and how ready to learn they are. Organisation involves the ability to establish what it is that you want to do, to know where to begin the task, to understand the sequence in which to carry it out (including pulling together the necessary materials), to problem-solve in the event of a challenge, and the ability to persist with the task to completion (and within an appropriate time frame).Organisation is an important aspect in play, language, social interaction, personal management (e.g. self-care tasks or bringing home all their belongings from school), and academic task performance (e.g. homework, project planning and performance).Organisation is typically a skill that needs to be specifically modelled, supported by sensible structures (such as diaries or visual charts, labelled storage containers) and reinforced by realistic routines (pack away one toy/task before commencing another). I will include a photo of a student well organised and ready to learn.

Snapshot of K - 6 W

The students of K-6W have had a great couple of terms this year.

Beginning with a favourite activity of swimming and this year had the added benefit of our school’s expert tutor, Beth. Water activities are a great way for our students to explore their sensory needs. When in the water, their attention can be heightened therefore, when they are in the water, other skills such as speech and gross motor skills can be worked on.

2018 has been a fantastic year for Anthony. He has been determined to become a prefect since 2016. In order for him to function as a prefect he has been working very hard to overcome a number of huge anxiety hurdles. He was a boy that never liked too much noise, never liked to be touched by others and he’s overcome his fear of the heaters in the hall. He is conversing more with his peers and teachers alike and has been so proud to pull on the blazer for special events.

A favourite activity for all of K-6W is Wednesday mornings. We pile into the Prado and head to Mudgee for Riding for the Disabled (RDA). It’s a volunteer run service for all people with disabilities. Our students are led around the course, engaging with their walkers and horses alike. Each and every student looks forward to riding each week. They are able to accomplish so many things whilst sitting atop of the horse. They are learning to both call and follow instructions, engage with their horse and the volunteers and build much needed core muscle strength. It’s a tremendous volunteer run organisation that is helping to transform our kids.
