Unit Meeting Minutes

April 3, 2018

First Vice President, Sr. Carol Brandon, called the meeting to order at 7:04PM. Fifteen

members attended at Sokol Center; five members from the Executive Board called in via

teleconference. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Sr. Renata Greene reported that

her daughter, Sr. Erika Greene, had emergency back surgery, and that she is recovering

nicely.

Correspondence: Newsletters were received from Sokols Greater Cleveland, St. Louis, Spirit,

and the Czech Catholic Union.

BOI: Srs. Lynn Conrad and Sharon Stanek reported that this week’s Camp was cancelled,

regular gymnastics classes will resume Saturday, April 7, and the youth membership and

associate members fees have been sent to ASO.

UPC: Br. Alex Novacek reported on the highlights of the UPC monthly meeting, which was

held Thursday, March 15. The committee continues to follow through on the necessary

repair/maintenance projects for the Center and Camp. Camp leaf clean-up, which

wasn’t completed during the fall, will be scheduled soon. Continuing to collect lot lease

and dock site payments. Br. Novacek announced that the Seidel cottage will be going up

for sale this spring. It is hoped that the UPC will get enough volunteers for the weekend

Camp clubroom, once again utilizing SignUpGenius. If not enough members volunteer,

assignments will be made. Committee members are working on new ideas to utilize the

Center clubroom during the Czech/Slovak Festival, July 21-22, 2018. The next UPC meeting

will be held on Tuesday, April 10, at the Center or via teleconference.

Activities Committee: Committee members Brs. Joseph Michalek and Alex Novacek and

Srs. Amanda Knapp and Meg Novacek have compiled a preliminary schedule of events

for Sokol members and their invited friends to attend. Flyers will be sent out preceding

each event so that all members will have the necessary information. Upcoming June

events include a potluck dinner and bowling, polka dancing in the dance hall, potluck

breakfast followed by a kids’ fishing clinic, Bingo in the clubroom, and a karaoke evening.

American Sokol XXI Convention, Cleveland, Ohio, April 26-29, 2018: At the March 2018 Unit

Meeting, Sr. Greene asked if Sokol Detroit would like to send additional members to the

Convention, and in the April Unit meeting, Sr. Susan Bares asked again. However, at this

time, there are no additional members who are interested in attending this year’s

Convention.

It was asked where Sokol Detroit checks should be sent for the ½-page advertisement in

the Night at the Races event booklet and the Coffee Break sponsorship. Sr. Ann Marie

Hurych will send Sr. Greene clarification on this.

Membership voted on how Sokol Detroit views the American Sokol Executive Board

election, the 2018-2022 Operating Budget and the Summary of Changes to the 2014

Bylaws. Sokol Detroit delegates, who will convey the will of Sokol Detroit membership at the

Convention, are Srs. Melanie Mily and Greene, Br. Novacek. Other Detroit members serving

as delegates: Sr. Bares (Northeastern District Educational Director); Sr. Meg Novacek

(Northeastern District Bylaws Director); Sr. Maryann Fiordelis (National Physical Director); and

Br. Allen Cushing (National Foundation Director).

Executive Board Election: Members present discussed candidates for the offices for which

more than one candidate was nominated. This included the offices of President, Financial

Secretary, Foundation, and three Board Members. After much discussion, members made

Sokol Detroit recommendations.

2018-2022 American Sokol Operating Budget Proposal: Br. Novacek reported that the pre-

convention Budget and Finance Committee proposal does not include an increase in

membership dues. The four-year budget, including total income and expenses, is $845,950,

and recommended changes included reducing some services. And, if the Bylaw change

impacting the number of members is enacted (i.e., removing the requirement that youth

parents shall be Sokol members), there is an alternate budget, which includes more

aggressive expense cuts.

Changes to 2014 American Sokol Bylaws: Sr. Novacek presented the final summary of

proposed Bylaws changes. Members then discussed and submitted Sokol Detroit’s

tentative positions on the seven articles that had not previously been decided upon. Sr.

Novacek will send the updated change log to membership. She also will share our input

during the Northeastern District teleconference next week. Sr. Novacek hopes that this will

assist the delegates with the convention floor discussion and to convince others of Sokol

Detroit’s position.

Sr. Novacek noted that the proposed Bylaws also contain addendums that were included

there for “easy access”. Now that the ASO website “Admin” backroom has all the SOPs,

she will propose to the Convention that these items to be posted on the ASO website

instead of as addendums to the Bylaws.

Members advised Sr. Novacek that Sokol Detroit would be willing to store national office

files, etc., if it ever becomes necessary.

The next Northeastern District Teleconference will be held Tuesday, April 10, at 7:00PM.

The April 2018 minutes were approved as corrected. The next Unit Meeting will be held at

the Center at 7:00PM on Tuesday, May 1, 2018. The meeting was adjourned at 9:19PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Rose Wiggle, Co-Recording Secretary
