This summer MBCA members are in for some great events, not only here in the Greater Washington Section, but around the country!The GWS autocross season is already well underway with two great days completed, but plenty more on the schedule. Keep an eye on the website and Facebook Page for the 2011 Autocross Awards Social to be held this summer. All members are welcome to attend!Looking for some classic summer fun? We will have a picnic and poker-rally drive in the Maryland countryside starting at R&H Motor Cars in Owings Mills MD on July 22.Looking to attend the traditional Concours d’Elegance events? You have one in Michigan during the Concours at St. Johns on July 29 and the Legends of the Autobahn held August 17, just before Pebble Beach in California. They are not that far away. GWS members have attended and participated in both events in years past!Look for more events this fall, like a judged car show at Mercedes-Benz of Catonsville on September 16. This is a great chance to come hang out, catch up with friends and talk about all things cars.

This fall GWS members will gather on October 21 at our annual members meeting to elect new section officers to run the club at American Service Center in Arlington VA. This is a great time to join in and volunteer your time to help.We welcome several new members who have joined the team this summer. Special thanks go out to Lavada Starr of Baltimore and Charles Colbert of Herndon for volunteering to be a part of the team that operate your club!Feeling like a winner? MBCA’s largest National Event, StarFest, will be held in Phoenix AZ in late September. For those of you who attended in 2010, hosted by GWS, you know how much fun it can be, and the Desert Stars Section will not disappoint! Wayne Carini, host of TV’s signature series “Chasing Classic Cars” on the Velocity for Discovery channel, has been named the StarFest 2012 Honorary Event Chairman. Mr. Carini is teaming with MBCA for a special “Concours Autism Research Fund-Raiser” on Sunday, September 30, during the StarFest Concours d’Elegance.StarFest will be five days of MBCA activities, from Concours to Defensive Driving, from track and autocross events, to special tours and social events, or just come and hang out at one of the country’s most prestigious resort hotels for a fraction of what you would normally pay. On May 4 and 5, 2012 a two-day online web conference was held instead of an in-person meeting, saving the club more than $35,000. In a time when budgets are tight, this was a trial to see if online meetings could work for the MBCA Board of Directors.Audit Report: Each year the club goes through a full financial audit by an outside firm Biggs Kofford reported that they found our finances to be in fine shape and had no concerns. We ended the 2011 year with total liabilities and net assets of $1,587,878. Total Revenues last year for the National Club were $1,478,895 and expenses of $1,708,668 resulting in a net loss. The Star Magazine has continued to operate under budget since being brought in-house and will be profitable for the club.Mike Salemi, Treasurer of the International Stars Section, made a presentation on the MBCA Raffle that is run by his Section to benefit the club as a whole. The raffle is managed in Michigan, as the State of Colorado does not permit them. The raffle continues to be a strong source of income for the club.The Enthusiast Committee: Reported on the re-establishment of the committee with a wide range of Mercedes-Benz experts across the country. This results in a member benefit with a page on the mbca.org website, and an online gazette to provide members with information on Mercedes-Benz vehicles.The Election Committee: Reported that May 15 was the deadline for petitions for Regional Director and Director-at-Large positions up for election in 2012. As of the date of the meeting, not all positions had candidates to fill them.The Leadership Committee: Reported that the summer edition of Turn Signals, a publication for section leaders, will be released in late May. A leadership meeting open to the membership will be held during StarFest 2012 on Saturday September 29, as well as at StarTech 2013 next May.The Membership Committee: Reported that it is working with Lisa Juhl, MBCA Director of Marketing, to test various recruitment programs developed over the last few years to grow the membership. Membership retention continues to be a concern with as many new member joining each month as we lose. Membership at the end of April was 19,918, the end of 2011 at 19,596.The membership dues increase has resulted in no negative impact on membership growth. Ads for MBCA are showing up on Facebook. This test has been sucessful by industry standards and has resulted in eleven new members in the first five days. Look for MBCA to be promoted more online in the near future.The MBCA Member Directory produced by Harris Connect sold just over 3,000 copies and is due to be distributed this summer. The club will receive $10K for that from Harris Connect because of the sale of those copies.

The National Events Committee: Discussed changes to what events are required to be held at national events. A motion was made to make events more reflective of what members want, that motion was defeated in a tie vote.The Newsletter Committee: Reported it will hold a competition from June through October, winners will be announced at the November Fall National Board Meeting in Reno NV. All sections will be entered with awards for both print and electronic newsletters.StarFest 2012 Committee: Reported that MBCA’s bi-annual national event is coming along well. Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars will be at the event supporting a charity focused on autism. The concours will be held on Sunday, autocross and defensive driving will be held on Saturday, while track events will be Monday and Tuesday.StarTech® Committee: Reported the establishment of the national committee to look at the event from a long-term perspective. The committee will establish dates in the future so that sections can work together to develop a strong and long lasting network to support the event. A report was made on StarTech® 2013, that MBUSI has approved the event, plans for it are now moving forward with hotel and venue contracts being drawn up. Promotion will start after StarFest 2012.Tech Committee: Reported that they are trying to be more pro-active on answering the online questions posted on the mbca.org website.MBCA Educational Foundation: Reported that the Teen Defensive Driving Program is being ramped up and a program will be presented at StarFest 2012 as well as the November Fall National Board Meeting in Reno NV.The Regional Director’s Report: The NBO is asked to acknowledge a sponsoring member when a new member joins the club. A concern was voiced that one member may be sponsoring too many members; the RD’s asked to acknowledge that member for doing good work. The RD’s will hold regularly scheduled meetings throughout the year and the existing RD’s mentor new ones when they come on board. The RD’s requested that MBCA acknowledge the important role that Newsletter Editor’s play in the sections and thank them for all the work they do.The next meeting will be held in-person in Reno NV starting on November 2 with the official National Board meeting being held on Saturday, November 3, 2012.

This summer members will gather at R&H Motor Cars in Owings Mill Maryland for a summer picnic and rally drive, “Poker Run” where the luck of the draw will determine the day’s winning hand.Beginning the day, attendees will enjoy classic summer picnic fare of burgers, brats, salads, and non alcoholic beverages provided by R&H Motor Cars.Attendees will then take a leisurely drive through the countryside with a number of stops, answering questions and picking up playing cards that will make up a poker hand, along the way. Nothing too hard, but expect a few zingers, trick questions and twists and turns along the way!

The final stop will be at one of Maryland’s wineries, where each team’s hand will be calculated and a winner announced. We are happy a group of Baltimore area MBCA members have started to plan events and encourage others to get involved. You do not have to be a college student to experience Spring Break! Amelia Island Concours is the first of the triple crown of USA Concours events, held in early March, this is the first sense that winter is over, and how the season begins for many MBCA members.The week before the “Amelia Island Show” is filled with events that satisfy any automotive enthusiast. Car auctions, seminars, marque drives of new models and celebrity-studded social events make up the glamour and excitement of the Amelia Island experience, and has for the last 17 years.Mercedes-Benz is right there in the center of everything - as a founding sponsor of the show, showing off classic, as well as brand new models, highlighting the brand in a number of ways. From displays and drives, to dinners and press introductions of new models!

This year AMG played a big role having the AMG Driving Academy staff on hand to demonstrate the AMG product line. From the C63 AMG Coupe to the E63 Wagon, and of course the full line of C, E, and S sedans, CLS, and SLS. Not just a display of Mercedes-Benzs alone, attendees are able to test drive many different high-line brands around this island paradise.For those who like to shop, you can buy everything from auto themed art work and jewelry to the cars themselves. Two prestigious auction houses, RM Auctions and Gooding & Company hold high-line vehicle auctions in the days prior to the show, with vehicles going into the six and seven digits!Arriving on Friday we attended the Gooding & Company Auction at the Omni Plantation. Although not directly affiliated with the Amelia

Island Concours, RM benefits from the excitement and the crowds that come for the Amelia Island Concours weekend of events.Friday is a great day to take in the seminars, vendor displays and new marque drives held at the Ritz Carlton where the Amelia Concours is hosted. Friday is a more intimate experience than Saturday, you are not overwhelmed by the crowds and you get to see the cars and talk with manufacturers representatives, visit with friends, that may not be as easy to do on Saturday or Sunday.Saturday repeats what happens on Friday, just with more enthusiasm! Saturday night is when a number of dinner and social events happen, including the annual MBCA |

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK 350

The Daily Driver’s Practical Car

I have to admit, my first thoughts were that I was not going to like this car. The preconceived notions were that it was a SLS wannabe, small inside, basically a chick car. Those were quickly dissolved on the 1,000 mile, two-day drive to North Carolina for an MBCA event.My first thought was; “Is it practical? Well after driving it and getting very good fuel economy and engine performance, practical may need a better definition! The second, “Is it a chick car?”Although women are attracted to the SLK, and do drive them, men do not lose their masculinity by driving the SLK, as they may with the competitors, the Porsche Boxter and the Audi TT. Within a few miles, there was no question this is a driver’s car, the SLK is nimble, and powerful, it goes where you point it!The look of the car is very iconic, even more so now, with the arrival of the new 2013 SL. This truly is a little brother in the line with the SLS and SL. Color and options play a big difference in the experience of any car, the deep black (no cost) exterior and black interior with aluminum trim (no cost option) made this car look quite stealth like. This SLK had the aluminum roll bar trim delete (takes

$150 off the price) and is worth doing to keep the monochromatic look. Upgrading the wheels to one of the AMG options will make this car stand out even more.Upon getting into the driver’s seat I was impressed at how roomy it was; the dash and controls are well laid out,the seats allow you to stretch out with infinitely adjustable backs. The air scarf in the top of the seat blew heated or cooled air on our necks and shoulders, and, as odd as that sounds, it was very comfortable. Interior volume was more than I expected. Any sports car, coupe or cabriolet is not going to be as roomy as the ML that I drive on a daily basis. The seating and leg and head room were perfectly comfortable, though the seat bottom can become tiring on a six-hour ride. Driving a sports car this size, you do not need to bring along anything but your driver’s license and bail money!As far as engine performance, driving both the Interstate as well as back roads, I found the 350 engine had power to spare, which demonstrated itself during a long hill climb on I77 in Northwestern North Carolina, passing a 7 series BMW. There was as much power as needed, and more when asked for! I did not expect much fuel economy with my lead foot, but the SLK averaged a respectable 27.5 average

mpg for the trip.The ride was sporty OK, I will even say rough- definitely more athletic than I am used to in my M or C Class! Not that I expected the soft ride of an S Class! It is, after all a small sports car!Luggage space is surprisingly roomy, even with the top down; just don’t expect to be able to access much in a fully packed trunk with the top down. Once the top is in place in the trunk, you can only access a few items. Speaking of the top down, who owns a cabriolet without driving it topless? Like any convertible, your hair will be windswept and the noise level increases, but not so much that you cannot have a conversation or listen to the sound system without maxing out the volume.Considering that this a convertible, the sound performance on the audio system was just fine of course upgrading to the multimedia package would improve it. No question the audio system is designed to support the Apple product line, through the pig tail connector, and an on-screen display of songs. The pig tail was easy to access in the center console, but if you wanted to connect an iPad, the issue would be where to stow it? Droid smart phones are an afterthought, the Bluetooth® connector worked just fine for the phone and playing standard music files. (Continued on Page 12)

Mercedes-Benz High-Mileage Clinic Report

MBCA members appreciate the value of a Mercedes-Benz no matter the mileage, and know that value does not disappear as the miles add up on the odometer.Twelve Mercedes-Benz’s were qualified to receive the high- mileage badge, an award given out by Mercedes-Benz, and certified by EuroMotorcars at this year’s event.EuroMotorCars Mercedes-Benz in Bethesda MD has been host to the Section’s Mercedes-Benz High Mileage Certification and Service Clinic for three years. This is a great way for members to join together to celebrate a common accomplishment, and to have their Mercedes-Benz gone over by a certified M-B trained mechanic.Two members received special awards. Tanya Anderson was selected as the member who shares the love of Mercedes-Benz cars with youngsters, and Tanya’s 1999 SL500 was also voted the hottest SL at the event. Randy West with his 2000 SL230 was the “Most Patient Attendee” as his car was the very last one to get a service check.Look for next year’s event to happen in early spring 2013 at EuroMotorCars Bethesda.

Defensive Driving & Autocross School Report

A dedicated group of volunteers and instructors came out on May 27 to help the section’s students develop their driving skills. Starting with varied experience levels from just five hours to regular autocross participants, the students ended the day better and more experienced drivers.Chief Instructor, Pete Gochman, led the classroom session, after which instructors took students through MBCA’s standard slalom, emergency lane change, emergency braking, and skid pad until the students gained confidence.Upon the completion of instruction, students, instructors, and volunteers were divided into two run groups, and given the opportunity to run a simplified autocross course.

Madison Remillard, the least experienced driver in the group, cut seventeen seconds off her time. Emily Blase turned in the fastest ladies time in the Mercedes-Benz group. Emily’s sister Abby drove the family 190E 2.3-16 to a respectable finish and took top points in her group.Students completing the course included Madison Remillard, Vanessa Sousa, Erich Engle, Abby Blase, and Emily Blase. We thank the instructors and volunteers who made this event possible: Pete and Barrie Gochman, Mike Wirt, Steve Spector, Greg Knoll, Nick Morales, Brad Blase, John Heflin, Jim Glenn, and Paul Vandenberg. The SLK can be practical, efficient, as well as, attractive and fun to drive!

This year the MBCA | Peachtree Section dinner was host to members from 17 different sections around the country. A select number of MBCA members are invited to attend the black-tie dinner held at the Ritz Carlton hosted by Mercedes-Benz.The culmination of events is the show on Sunday. This year it has expanded to include more cars and more people than ever before. Mercedes-Benz Club of America this year provided “The Mercedes-Benz Club of America Award” for the Most Historically Significant Mercedes-Benz. Presented by MBCA Past National President, Roger Van Ness. I was awarded to a 1952 Mercedes-Benz W194, owned by Bruce and Jolene McCaw of Bellevue, WA.Each year this event becomes more popular and grows in strength, from the activities and the vendors, to the show itself! If you have not attended, you are missing a great opportunity to see and experience an amazing Concours event. Next year’s event will be held March 8-10 2013, plan on attending, and participating as an MBCA member. -William Hopper

Deutsche Marque Concours Report

The 29th Annual Deutsche Marque Concours d’Elegance was held on a perfect spring day at Nottoway Park in Vienna VA. Although the day was overcast, the weather was comfortable and the chance of showers had passed by the time the cars converged on the show field.Five teams of Mercedes-Benz judges swarmed the field, reviewing a group of finely-turned-out Mercedes-Benz’s. From the classic, the ready-to-be-restored, and the latest from AMG, this show had quite a variety of German iron to enjoy.Special thanks to Andrew Syracuse from the NYC/Long Island Section who joined us to help judge. We also welcomed to the team Charles W. Colbert, who recently relocated to the area with the Navy and joined GWS.A special treat was the ready-to-be-restored 1967 230 S Universal (fintail wagon) driven from Maine by Keith Morgan, and reassembled on the field!A special thank you to all the members and friends who volunteered their time to help make this event a great success. Next year, a special 30th Anniversary Celebration is being planned for the first Sunday in May 2013! - William Hopper

From 1966 to 1968 he worked for Mercedes-Benz of Canada in Toronto as a Mercedes-Benz Contract Technician. In the summer of 1968, on a sightseeing trip to New York and Washington, D.C., he fell in love with the United States and accepted a job at HBL in Fairfax, Virginia. Since 1969, Norbert has been working exclusively for Mercedes-Benz dealers in the Washington area, pleasing thousands of clients in various positions

such as Technician, Quality Control Manager, Shop Foreman and Assistant Service Manager. In addition to his unique professional credentials, Norbert has been a member of the Mercedes Benz Club of America since 1974 and has served as President/Vice President of the Greater Washington Section from 1986-1994.
