Principal’s Report Welcome back to the 2020 school year. The year has started with a bang with so much happening already. Tonight we have our Parent Information Night where you are invited to come and mingle with the staff and other families while visiting your child’s class. The teachers will have information for you regarding what to expect this year and will be available to answer any questions you may have. The weather is looking good and I look forward to catching up with many of you tonight. At Penola Primary we have a strong belief that every child is capable and competent. It is our aim to work with families and the community to develop our students intellectually, academically, physically and socially/emotionally. The education of our children is a partnership between the home, school and wider community. We look forward to working alongside our families in 2020.

Welcome We are very excited to welcome our 25 new Foundation year students to our school. Most are very familiar with our school and surrounds due to transition programs in 2019 and have settled in well. A big welcome to Ameliah Anderson, Qeesya Fariq Idzwa, Chloe Grosvenor, Alissa Hammer, Amy Wooding, Blake Lowe, Fletcher Lydeamore, Jim Marlow, Hunter Merrett, Axel Peake, George Willson, Destiny Beevers, Phoebe Devereux, Callie Gibbs, Kenzi Grosser, Sophia Kennett, Aria Lubcke, Laila Raidis, Sophie Wilson, Ryker Bryant, Phoenix Marcus, Gus Simson, Jack Skeer, Tyrel Summers-Lind and Alexander Weston.

We also welcome other new families to our school. Welcome to Mateo Conti (Year 1), Dya Aulukh (Year 1), Flynn Hayward (Year 2) and Elodie Burr (Year 6). We hope all our new students have settled in well and will have a great experience at our school.

From our visits to classes so far, students seem to have settled in well, with many positive comments from teachers about their classes.

Parent Information Night Our Parent Information Evening will be Friday 7th

February starting at 6pm. The format is a little

different this year.

6 pm – Whole school meet and greet- near the

playground, between the unit building and the oval

6:10 – Governing Council AGM

6:30 – Classes will be open for 45 minutes for families

to wander through and talk to teachers. Each class

will have an information sheet/pack that will contain

all the information you need. This is an opportunity

to ask questions and seek clarification. Later in the

term each family will be involved in a ‘meet and greet’

with your child/ren’s teacher/s. This will also be an

opportunity to ask any clarifying questions.

7:15 – classes close and whole school BBQ

A complimentary BBQ will be available from 7:15 pm. It will be located near the playground, between the unit building and the oval. Some food will be available from 6:20 for those who may be feeling a little hungry. Please feel free to BYO nibbles, drinks and chairs/picnic blanket.

Governing Council A new council will be elected for the year and will

meet twice per term. Being part of the Governing

Council gives you an insight into the decision-making

of the school and allows your voice to be heard.

Governing Council positions will also be elected on

the Parent Information night. We encourage as many

parents as possible to stay for this.

Parent Volunteer Group

The Parent Volunteer Group hopes that everyone has had a wonderful school break and welcomes you all back to the new school year in 2020. The Parent Volunteer Group has recently held its AGM and has welcome a new committee on board for 2020.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 3th March in the staff room at 3.30pm. All are welcome to attend.

Student Wellbeing News

Last year Penola Primary School received a substantial grant from the Department for Education, aimed at developing Interoception awareness across our site. Interoception awareness is ‘…broadly defined as the conscious perception of an internal bodily state, for example one’s breathing and heart beating’ (Interoception 301, Goodall et al, 2019). For some children, explicit learning around what they feel, and where they feel different emotions and bodily signals, is vital in regards to their ability to self-regulate and identify hazardous risks. Therefore, on Wednesdays, Toby Thomas and I will be working with groups of children from Foundation - Year 7 to support their Interoception awareness development along with social/emotional support, and how to identify when they are ready for learning. This will be taught through a variety of hands-on activities, varying depending on the needs of the children. The beauty of this initiative is that it is highly flexible and fluid - meaning some children may participate in the sessions all year while others may participate for a shorter time. Through this grant, we have also been fortunate enough to set up an Interoception room for children to (access with an educator) as a calm-down space to help children reset their bodies and mind ready for learning. The Interoception room is located in the Unit. Please feel free to pop your head in before or after school to have a look, or arrange a time to see me if you have any questions.

Senior Swimming Carnival The Senior Swimming Carnival for ALL Years 4-7 students plus the Year 3 children who qualified at our timing sessions, will be on Friday (February 14th) starting at 9.15am We welcome families and friends to watch the carnival and support the children throughout the afternoon. We suggest that you bring a chair and set up on the eastern side of the pool. Notes will be going out.

If you require any more information regarding any of the payment options available, or wish to make alternative arrangements, please contact the Front Office. We will be happy to assist families to find the best possible payment option to pay the 2020 Materials & Services Charges. When fees remain unpaid after the 6th April 2020 (or agreed instalment date), in accordance with our Governing Council debt collection policy legal action to recover any outstanding Materials & Services Charges.

The Song Book – Music Program

We are pleased to report that our school, along with Millicent North Primary, Penola Primary, Mount Burr Primary, Rendelsham Primary and Melaleuca Park Primary have been selected to be part of a Song Room program – Transformational Learning through Creativity. The Song Room is a foundation focussed on arts education and the involvement of our schools with the Song Room is endorsed by the Music Strategy within the Department for Education. The program will run across our Year1/2 to our Year 5/6 classes and will work on building classroom teacher capacity in delivering music and arts education. Each class will have a dedicated teaching artist working with teachers and the school. The program will be funded for three years. Research points to developing music and arts skills in our students having a significant impact on overall academic success, and wellbeing.

School Dentist

Robe Dental will be returning this year to conduct school based check-ups in May and November this year. To participate in the program you will need to fill in and return forms to school, these will be sent home at a later date. Growing Up Smiling (GUS) is a free mobile dental program that delivers oral health care and education for students across South Australia. Check-ups and treatment performed are at no out of pocket expense to students. Your child’s dental care may include: · An oral examination; and where clinically necessary,

one or more of the following services: x-rays, cleaning, fluoride treatment, dietary advice, oral hygiene instruction.

· Follow up visits for general dental services such as fillings, fissure seals and extractions.

Please be aware that if you take your child to their clinic you may be required to pay for the treatment. Not everyone is eligible for the $1000 per child dental

scheme provided by Medicare. If you are planning to take your child for additional treatment it would be a good idea to check your eligibility and find out if there will be a cost to you prior to making the appointment.

Parking

Please be aware of the areas you are and are not permitted to park. The area across the road from where the buses pull up is not only inconvenient for the drivers, but also a dangerous place for children to cross. It is a no parking zone between 8.30 – 8.45 a.m. and 3.15 – 3.30 p.m. We also discourage anyone from parking on the eastern side of Young Street during bus times. As shown on the picture below.

No Hat No Play

You are reminded that this term is a No Hat No Play Sun Safe term. We have had a fantastic response to date – thank you. We have plenty of new hats in both sizes in stock available for only $12.

Riding in the School Grounds

Just a friendly reminder, that bikes, scooters ect.. are NOT to be ridden in the school grounds. Please walk your bike/scooters to and from the school gate to the bike shed. This is for the safety of everyone in the school grounds. It is very busy in the mornings and afternoons, with lots of people around and we don’t want anyone hurt.

Library News Scholastic Book Orders The Scholastic Book Order Issue 1 has gone out this week. If you would like to order some books please return by the Tuesday 11th February 2020 . If any of the books are presents and are not to be given out to your child/ren, please let Dione know at the library or on the order form and she will put them aside for you to collect.

Canteen News

We would like to welcome Trish Wooding to the school. Trish will be working in the canteen on Thursdays and Fridays while Charmaine has some time off. For Terms 1 and 2 lunch orders will NOT be available on Wednesdays. This means the canteen will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at recess only and Thursdays and Fridays for recess and lunch (including lunch orders). Canteen and Munchies Rosters are being finalised and will be sent out next week.

DO YOU HAVE SECOND-HAND PENOLA PRIMARY SCHOOL UNIFORMS YOU NO LONGER NEED?

While 2020 is a transition year for our new school uniform, many of our children have already begun wearing the new and updated items. This has brought to our attention that not only do we have a surplus of uniform stock at school that is brand new but just in the old colour and logo; that many of our families would also have a surplus of good-condition, second-hand t-shirts and jumpers. With this in mind and our continued work as a school to reduce landfill, we have been working with ‘Cows for Cambodia’ to see if there was a way we could re-purpose our old uniform rather than simply throwing them away. While the organisation’s primary aim is to provide a cow bank for Cambodian families to have their own cow, they also work within communities to provide education opportunities for Cambodian children, including helping them to learn English.

This year, through some of our small group education programs, we aim to put together uniform packs (consisting of a t-shirt and jumper) with a picture book or similar. Penola Primary children will have the opportunity to write a message on a package to send to a Cambodian child. Depending on how many we are able to organise, they will be shipped to Cambodia to be used as a school uniform at one school or given to children at a number of different schools.

Although we have quite a bit of old stock still at school, we are asking willing families to donate any of their old t-shirts and jumpers (in good condition only – no stains or rips) that they no longer want, to be included in the packages we send over. Children are also invited to donate a picture book to go with their package – the picture book can be a second-hand one from home or families may choose to buy an inexpensive new one to send.

It is by no means expected that families donate any of their old uniforms. If you child is still wearing them this year please do not feel obliged to buy the new uniform straight away. We are simply looking for a way we can re-purpose items if people wish to.

Donations can be left at school in the Interoception room in the Unit building.

Novel Coronavirus

Updated Alert 30/1/20

Dear parent/caregiver,

SA Health has changed its advice to us in relation to Novel Coronavirus after the Federal

Government issued an updated alert late yesterday.

The updated advice is that:

Students/children and staff who have traveled to Hubei Province in the last 14 days should not attend school/preschool and isolate themselves in their homes for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province. Students/children and staff who have traveled to mainland China, not including Hubei Province, are able to return to school/preschool unless they are contacts of a confirmed case, or they have symptoms consistent with the virus. All students and staff who have traveled to mainland China should monitor themselves for the 14 days from their departure from mainland China for symptoms of Coronavirus.

Symptoms may include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and sore throat. People who

have travelled to China and have these symptoms should see a doctor or attend a hospital and

call ahead so they can prepare.

The South Australian Department for Education has indicated that it and SA Health will be

providing us with further information as necessary, including advising us if there are any known

specific risks to our school community.

Penola Primary School Planner -Term 1

Penola Under 14 and Under 17 footy training to

commence on the 13th February at 4.30pm followed by a BBQ for players and parents. Please come along to

Millicent Gymnastics Club

The Millicent Gymnastics Club is located in the Millicent Youth Centre at the

Millicent showgrounds We have gymnastics classes for school age

students on Wednesday afternoons, competition classes on Monday &

Tuesdays, & Kindergym classes for 0 to 5 yrs on

Under 10's Basketball

Do you want to be involved in Millicent Basketball?

The under 10's competition is suited for children aged between 7 and 10 years old, regardless of their ability. The new under 10's season starts on Tuesday the 26th of February and plays weekly

until the end of term 2. All games are played on Tuesday evenings between approximately 5 pm and 7 pm and each session runs for

an hour, which includes a half-hour training and game.
