PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Learning Goals at Cranbrook State School
What are student learning goals and why are they important?
Student learning goals are about improving students’ learning and achievement and building students’ capacity
to learn. They are about students becoming active participants in the learning process, empowering them to
become independent learners, and motivating them to achieve their full potential. When students are assisted to
delve into their own thinking and learning processes, they are drawn to think about the effectiveness of the
strategies they used to achieve the learning goals set. Planning what to do, monitoring progress towards
achieving it and evaluating the outcome can help students take more control over their thinking and learning
processes and equip them with learning to learn skills.
The stages of developing learning goals
The development of learning goals involves the stages of:
identifying learning goals (and strategies to achieve them)•
monitoring progress•
reporting on progress made•
refining or developing new goals.•

We believe all stages of the cycle are important, and in practice they overlap. As the diagram above
demonstrates, the process is ongoing and cyclical. The teacher’s role is pivotal throughout the process, not just
at the development and reporting stages. The process of developing, monitoring and reporting on a student’s
learning goals involves conversations about learning between the student and the teacher.
Conversations about learning encourage students to think about:
their own learning and thinking processes and challenge them to articulate the way they have gone about
learning
•
what their next steps might be•
how they are going to proceed with those next steps•
how they are going to know they have achieved success•
whether or not the method of learning was effective•
what they need more help to understand•
how they might achieve better understanding.•
Reading and Spelling Goals
All students at Cranbrook State School have a reading and spelling goal and teachers regularly focus on these
goals through the teaching of reading, especially in guided reading groups. A key strategy to build the education
partnership between parents and teachers, Spelling and Reading Goal Information Sheets are sent home with
the children to let parents know the following information:
Name of the Learning Goal.•
Why it is important?•
What does it mean?•
What students need to do to be successful?•
What teachers are doing?•

Your child should have received their term 3 Reading Goal Information by the end of Week 3. If you have
any questions or queries please talk to your classroom teacher.
Responsible Behaviour at Cranbrook
Students are provided with ongoing support in understanding and demonstrating expected behaviours. To help
all parents and carers understand what a Cranbrook Learner looks like or sounds like, the following behaviours
and settings will be included in every weeks newsletter.
