INSTRUCTOR PROFILE: Born in Sri Lanka, Inoka’s unique talents and artistic insight were

discovered at an early age. She was placed in a convent to study art, then obtained her master’s

degree at the prestigious Surikov Academy of the Arts in Moscow. Her award-winning work has

been shown in a variety of international exhibitions, and her works are held in private collections

throughout the world. Inoka works to constantly expand her artistic knowledge; recently, she

graduated from The Art Institute of Vancouver with a computer graphic design diploma. Inoka is

scheduled to teach Landscapes in Oil for adults beginning in January. See page 4.

echoes of the Artist: Works from the Permanent collectionThis exhibition explores images in which artists creatively incorporate representations of themselves or aspects of their lives. The artists are Alberta Browne, Diana Burgoyne, Barbara Cole, Janieta Eyre, Marianne Forsythe, George Littlechild, Al McWilliams, David Neel, Al Neil, Joseph Plaskett, Drew Shaffer, Henry Tsang, Jin-me Yoon.

intersections: full circle Art collective Diverse imagery, subjects, and techniques create a remarkable cross-over of shared themes in this exhibition of recent prints and other 2D works by ten women artists from Metro Vancouver.

Mirror MirrorIn this juried exhibition of self-portraits, artists reflect on the representation of the self. Organized by the Arts Council of Surrey.

open Sound 2012The works in this year’s Open Sound sound art series give expression to the hidden, the repressed, the lost, the invisible, and the inaudible. The final instalment is Hati by Toronto-based sound artist Debashis Sinha. Made, in part, of chandeliers of ghungru bells, Hati presents a meditative environment addressing the relationship between elephant communication, spirituality, and dance. Guest curated by Ross Birdwise.

reMiXX.sur.reHow do Surrey’s youth see Surrey? Using web cameras, interactive software, original audio tracks, hundreds of digital photographs, and video documenting Surrey’s people and places, a team of youth has created a dynamic portrait of this city.

Scenes of Selves, occasions for rusesThis exhibition presents the work of contemporary artists who create art in a variety of media that explores the limits of self-portraiture in relation to the archive and contemporary social media. The artists are Jim Andrews, Eryne Donahue, David Horvitz, Roselina Hung, Suzy Lake, Elizabeth Milton, Pushpamala N and Clare Arni, Carol Sawyer, Carrie Walker.

Surrey urban Screen: taking timeExploring portraits of the everyday through moving image projections, Taking Time focuses on ideas of the commute, routine and activity, and small acts. Works from Canadian and international artists Julie Andreyev, Josh Hite, Mark Lewis, and Gabriela Vanga & Mircea Cantor will be shown in looping sequence. Tune into FM 89.9 on your MP3 player or car stereo when nearby to hear the artworks with soundtracks.

Artist talk with Julie Andreyev and Josh Hite View the artworks in Taking Time, and join exhibiting artists Julie Andreyev and Josh Hite. Andreyev will talk about Bikride in relation to her Animal Lover series, an interspecies collaboration with her two companion dogs. Hite’s Repeats and Attempts, collectively shot by 23 skaters and riders at Chuck Bailey Youth Park, will be discussed in the context of his practice. Free, with refreshments

Prince rama in the WildernessA lively performance inspired by the most popular and timeless Indian epic The Ramayana, performed by Menaka Thakkar Dance Company. the vaudevillians Hit broadwayThe Vaudevillians, considered BC’s #1 seniors entertainment troupe, are performing their 9th annual concert in support of their bursary for students in the performing arts at Douglas College. This all-new show will appeal to all ages, as you relive the wonderful age of Vaudeville through singing and dancing to music from Broadway shows and lots of rollicking laughter.

the nutcrackerRoyal City Youth Ballet Company presents its 24th season of this much loved traditional ballet, with beautiful sets and extravagant costumes that illuminate the magic of the toy soldiers, Sugar Plum Fairy, and a growing Christmas tree. Under the artistic direction of Dolores Kirkwood, the cast of talented and dedicated dancers perform to Tchaikovsky’s classic score with its favourites such as Waltz of Flowers.

november: claudia cornwallClaudia Cornwall will give an illustrated reading and talk from her acclaimed biography/memoir At the World’s Edge: Curt Lang’s Vancouver 1937–1998. It reveals, with precision and suspense, how Lang packed his too-short life with pursuits ranging from poetry and painting to log salvage, boat building, and software development. His story parallels Vancouver’s own mid-twentieth-century evolution.

December: comfort eroMaster storyteller, Comfort Ero will take you on her journey from Africa to Canada, sharing how she has used storytelling to encourage positive changes in the lives of young people, and how incorporating masks and audience participation have enhanced her skills in communicating with Canadian audiences. Since arriving in Canada, she has worked in various roles to support immigrants and youth at risk.
