They invited the community to join in their celebration on August 31st. The Landscape Structures PlayBooster playground consists of two main structures that provide suitable equipment for ages 5 to 12 and is accessible by the entire community. The playground project was taken on in November of 2009, by the Calgary Jewish Community, and many other partners. The original playground, over 20 years old, no longer met the school or greater community’s rapidly evolving needs and had become very difficult to service. The playground committee spent time researching play equipment. A survey of all students in Grades 1 though 6 was conducted, as well, other play equipment was examined, children playing were observed and many pictures and notes were taken. “The design suggestions we came up with achieved the best of both worlds; conventional design elements and fresh new ideas”, shared Lorne Weiner, Playground Committee Member. The committee chose local playground supplier, Habitat Systems to work with on the project. Weiner noted, “The decision was based on the company meeting the identified criteria, which included equipment quality and serviceability, as well as addressing all five areas of psycho/motor development.” Weiner states, “The equipment is top notch and the installation team was very experienced. Everybody was flexible, laid back and Nadine was really helpful with our grand opening too”. The playground project benefited from a large variety of funding sources. The local community was extremely supportive and private donations, including a Student Council gift, trickled in even before the project plan was finalized. The fundraising spanned twelve months with many critical milestones to meet. “It was the matching grant from the Province of Alberta’s Community Facility Enhancement Program that really brought the project to fruition”, Weiner stated. Other initiatives included an event at the Telus World of Science organized by the school’s own fundraising team, as well as a grant from Parks Foundation Calgary. The committee is close to achieving its goal of zero impact on the operating budget. HABITAT IS GREEN! Did you know Habitat is an eco-friendly company?
