Guided ConversationsWHY: Why is it important to strategically
implement, monitor, and evaluate the School Improvement Plan?
HOW: How will we communicate the plan to all stakeholders so that they clearly understand and own their roles in implementation?
How do we build ownership of the strategy and the plan? How will we ensure implementation with fidelity? How is the implementation of your plan monitored and
evaluated? How is the impact of your plan monitored and evaluated?
WHAT: What will your school look like when this plan is implemented with fidelity?
What is the expected impact on student achievement?
DO
Connector• Review the Guided Conversation Questions • Choose which set of questions you believe are most
important – Why– How – What
• Gather with others in the designated corners of the room.
• Introduce yourself, tell the reason why you picked that set of guiding questions as most important
• When finished return to your table group
Measurement Activity• Using your tape measure:
– record the height of your table.– record the length of your arm.– record the width of your computer monitor.– record the distance your paper wad traveled.
• Submit these measurements using the Facilitated Measurement Toolkit found at http://tinyurl.com/nothelpfuleh.

Vocabulary
Improvement
Vocabulary - Activity
• Based on Marzano's Six Steps to Effective Vocabulary Instruction– Facilitator explains the new word, going beyond – Participants explain the new word in their own
words– Participants create a non-linguistic representation
of the new word (pictures and color)– Participants engage in activities that deepen their
knowledge of the new word

Tool
Strategy: What teachers do in the classroom with the students in the presence of content
Implementation: to carry out or put into action
Monitor: an arrangement for observing and recording data on strategy implementation and impact
Evaluation: an act or instance of determine effectiveness of an action or achievement
Fidelity: strict observance of promises or duties
Impact: to influence or effect change
Tool: anything used in doing certain work or producing a certain result
Table Activity
• At your table work with an elbow partner
• Each pair chooses 1 vocabulary term• Complete the Vocabulary sheet for at
least one term (10 minutes)• Share your creations with the rest of
your table
Why are we worried about monitoring and evaluation?
Do: Plan RequirementsESEA and PA 25 require annual evaluation of the following:
•Implementation of the plan•Student achievement results by subgroup using data from state assessments and other indicators•Modifications to plan as needed
ISDs/RESAs are required by PA25 to provide technical assistance to schools and districts to develop annual evaluations.
Where are we now?
Where do we want to go and how are we going to get there?

Remember when…..
“Only include strategies in your school improvement plan that you are committed
to implement and collect data around.”Beth Brophy 2012
Activities
Ultimately you need to know…To what extent are stakeholders committed with both hearts and minds to the strategy
or non-negotiable elements?

Evaluate PlanThe process is cyclical, and evaluation
data should inform the next cycle of planning.
The ultimate goal is to have improvement strategies take hold and become so internalized that they become part of the school culture.
Evaluate Plan - ConclusionBased on your evaluation, what modifications do you believe need to be made to either the implementation or instruction of this strategy?
•What do we continue to do?•What do we start to do?•What do we stop doing?•What do we need to “tweak”?

EXAMPLE 10-1-12
Sample FSI Implementation and Impact Chart
• Take 15 minutes to review this document at your table
• Label the text as you read using the following labels
Anything that strikes you as very important
Anything that leaves you wondering
Anything that surprises you
Write in anything that might be missing
EXAMPLE 10-1-12
Pair up• Stand up• Take your Sample Implementation and
Impact Chart• Find someone who is NOT sitting at your
current table• Share at least two areas that you labeled
in your reading of the sample
It’s all about…What instruction is occurring
and how do you know?
What students are learning and how do you know?
The only way to know is to…Gather

One Voice – One Plan
However noble, sophisticated, or enlightened proposals for changechange and improvementimprovement might be, they come to nothing if teachers don’t
adopt them in their own classrooms and if they don’t translate them into
effective classroom practiceseffective classroom practices..
