PRGM – Reference gases with the lowest available uncertainties.

In terms of metrological hierarchy, Primary Reference Gas Mixtures (PRGM) sit at the top of the traceability chain and hold the status of the highest quality standards available for use by commercial organisations. They are typically only used for the most sensitive calibrations where the best uncertainty is required. The composition of a primary standard is calculated directly from gravimetry and verified by a large number of analytical measurements in accordance with ISO 6142 Part 1.

PRGMs are typically used by calibration laboratories and specialty gas manufacturers to establish the reference values of their own internal standards through an analytical comparison with the PRGM. These internal standard mixtures are then used routinely to calibrate accredited reference gases or other working gas mixtures sold to customers. By using PRGMs in this way, gas mixtures sold to their client still have acceptably low uncertainties.

SRGM – Secondary Reference Gas Mixtures are prepared gravimetrically by EffecTech and are calibrated against PRGMs where the analytical value and analytical uncertainties are reported on the certificate. SRGMs are the most popular choice of calibration gas as they balance low uncertainties with value for money, especially when supplied in large volume cylinders.

CGM – Calibrated Gas Mixtures are prepared by another third party specialty gas manufacturer and are calibrated by EffecTech using PRGMs. The analytical value and uncertainty are reported on the certificate.

All of the calibration gases shown in this brochure can be supplied by EffecTech as ISO 17025 accredited PRGM, SRGM or through a third party supplier as a CGM.

Flow metering

A metering system validation will reduce exposure to commercial risk created over time by over or under measurement of gas volume.

• Gas volume uncertainties are the dominant factor in the metering of energy. Regular validations will reduce mismeasurements and unaccounted for gas

• ISO 17025 accredited for on-site calibrations of temperature, pressure and differential pressure ensuring traceable validations with defined uncertainty

• Financial confidence in billing of gas

• We operate a re-calibration database and will remind clients of forthcoming instrument calibrations.

Primary instrumentationOrifice plates must be inspected, cleaned and regularly re-certified by an accredited laboratory. Turbine and ultrasonic flow meters can be validated in-situ by monitoring various operating parameters. They are also removed periodically and sent to an accredited calibration facility for re-calibration with high pressure natural gas.

Secondary instrumentationOn site differential pressure (DP), pressure and temperature transmitters are calibrated according to our ISO 17025 accredited calibration scope ensuring a high standard of accuracy and traceability.

Flow computer Functions and calculations are verified against independent off-line calculations to ensure they are correct. In addition, constants and system data such as orifice plate, pipe sizes and gas composition dependant factors entered into the flow computer are verified.

Validations for emissions trading

requirements

Any industrial installation in the EU emitting significant quantities of carbon dioxide is subject to the monitoring and reporting requirements as outlined in the Commission’s “Monitoring and Reporting Regulations (MRR)” of the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU/ETS).

EffecTech provides services for clients necessary for compliance with the EU/ETS.

• On site ISO 17025 accredited calibration of your on-line process instruments. For natural gas fuel measurement, the evaluation is carried out according to ISO 10723:2012

• The MRR also specify required measurement uncertainties which vary depending on the process and industrial sector. In the natural gas fuelled power station sector, category C emitters are required to demonstrate an uncertainty of <1.5% relative for their measurement of carbon dioxide emissions

• An ISO 17025 calibration certificate is required by the verifiers to show compliance with the MRR

• An ISO 17020 inspection report outlining the suitability of the entire measurement system

• ISO 17025 accredited calibration gases

• ISO 17025 accredited testing of fuel gas samples collected from site.

The EU/ETS directive requires that measurements of carbon dioxide and their uncertainties be reported in accordance with the “Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement” (GUM) so that uncertainties can be directly compared without fear of differences arising due to the instrumentation or calculations used.

LNG

World’s First Traceable Cryogenic LNG Reference Liquids Developed at EffecTech

EffecTech has developed a bespoke cryostat facility for the production of cryogenic LNG reference liquids. Composition measurements made on the re-vapourised samples are compared with the reference gas values to determine any differences.

These differences in composition are quantified and the results are compared to the requirements of the vaporisation testing standard EN 12838:2000

The principal use of the cryostat is as a calibration device where instrument probes can be inserted into the cryostat so direct measurements of LNG inside the cryostat can be made to calibrate or validate the instrument.

A transportable version of the cryostat is under development providing calibrations and validations in situ at customers site.
