The brewing process yields wastewater that is typically high in solids, which can cause a burden for municipal utility systems. When a Northern California brewer encountered these problems, it took the initiative to solve them while creating a win-win solution for all parties involved. A key component of that solution was the Smith & Loveless ADDIGEST® wastewater treatment system.

This particular brewer enjoys the status of being one of the 10 largest micro-brewers in the United States, producing several hundred thousand barrels per year from its Northern California location. Driven by a philosophy that incorporates quality production with environmental responsibility, the brewer sets standards with its successful, tasty ales and its noble environmental practices.

This was typified when the city proposed applying surcharges to the brewery for the high strength wastewater entering the city system. In response, the brewer chose to pre-treat all of its wastewater on-site and reuse as much as possible, limiting the demand put upon the city system while maximizing many recycling benefits. In consultation with its engineer, the brewer designed a comprehensive treatment scheme that featured anaerobic treatment followed by a Smith & Loveless ADDIGEST® treatment system for aerobic polishing prior to reuse and discharge.

The entire on-site scheme handles up to 0.3 MGD with initial high-strength loadings of 6800 mg/L. Following the anaerobic reactor, the influent characteristics into the ADDIGEST® typically ranges between 300-500 mg/L BOD/TSS. In this case, the process-flexible ADDIGEST® design incorporates a single aeration zone (28’ wide by 50’ long by 18’ high; volume of nearly 175,000 gal.) and three hopper-style clarifiers.

This custom-designed ADDIGEST® wastewater treatment system aerobically polishes brewery waste effluent from an anaerobic reactor. The final effluent is partially reused on-site and the remainder is discharged to the city where it dilutes the city’s influent solids levels.

California Brewery cont.percent. Smith & Loveless was able to accomodate the changes without significant disruption to the project’s construction and original costs.

The ADDIGEST® routinely polishes the anaerobic stream down to 30 mg/L BOD, allowing the water to be recycled on-site and reused for spray irrigation and other purposes around the facility. The rest of the water is discharged safely into the city sewer, actually helping to dilute the solids levels at the WWTP. In keeping with a proactive environmental approach, the biosolids generated in the treatment process are sent to a nearby university’s cattle feed operation. Because of its resourceful approaches, the brewer has gained favor with its neighboring community and has been cited for environmental excellence. Smith & Loveless is proud to be a small part of this success.

Smith & Loveless wants to provide its potential customers – and hard-working sales representatives – with as much information about our products and corporate culture as possible. That’s why our website is always growing and improving. The latest additions are yet another step in developing the most comprehensive site in the industry. Let’s take a closer look.

En EspañolThere are two areas with content in Spanish. The first, and most important, is the product area found in the drop-down menu under “Products.” From here, visitors can navigate to one of six product sections, including S&L Pumps, pump stations, treatment systems, grit removal equipment and more. For added benefit to our Spanish speaking customers, “En Español” also appears on the right side of the main menu selections. Here, site visitors can read about many of the topics in the English part of the site including, “Parts & Services,” “News,” “About S&L,” a link to register for “Pump ESP” and much more.

InternationalWith installations on every continent, Smith & Loveless is truly an international company. Found under “About S&L,” the “Markets Served” page is a new wealth of information about our efforts outside the United States. To points North in Canada, to our friends across the pond in New Zealand, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, we are refocusing our efforts on bringing S&L technology to every corner of the globe. Some of our most popular regions have specific pages with information on installations in their areas, plus a direct contact to the International Division.

IndustrialWhile industrial applications make up a smaller portion of S&L projects than municipal, it is our goal to bridge that gap. And what better way to start than to have a plethora of information on our website about the different industries we serve. From wineries and food processing plants to mining and oil refineries, Smith & Loveless has a solution to handle the wastewater demands at any industrial facility – and it’s all right there for the decision-makers to see. A project profile about how S&L helped solve a problem in the agribusiness industry will go a long way in developing a relationship with other companies in that industry.

Continuously expanding the S&L website helps customers find us more quickly through the addition of targeted key words and relevant content. Watch the site in the coming months as we continue to develop more content, and be sure your sites link to www.smithandloveless.com.

S&L Website Grows with New Information

Because of the tremendous support and generosity from Smith & Loveless employees the past nine years, S&L once again participated in the Angel Tree Program sponsored by the Salvation Army Social Services Center.

This year, 66 precious “angels” were quickly gobbled up by S&L employees looking to spread some holiday cheer.

Angel Tree Coordinator for S&L, Julie Widener said, “I see the gifts they purchase, hear the stories from their shopping excursion and witness the joy they feel knowing they have helped make Christmas special for a child less fortunate. Delivering the gifts to the distribution site provides me the opportunity to see first hand the real meaning of Christmas. I am truly blessed.”

Almost every day at S&L is a journey for bidder Jeff Little – a journey he welcomes and enjoys.

“I like the people I work with, but also the challenge that comes with putting together bids and solving any problems that come with them,” Little said. “And I try to put together the best proposal possible to increase our (S&L’s) chance of success in winning the order, and to match what the customer wants.”

Prior to coming to S&L in August 2007, Little worked in north Kansas City and Springfield, Mo., near his hometown of Clever, Mo. Little grew up on a cattle farm in Clever, a town with a population of barely more than 500.

“People might not think of me as a country boy because I’m citified now,” Little said.

Little attended Southwest Missouri State University, now called Missouri State University, where he graduated with a technology degree in Industrial Management. While at college, Little met his wife Heather, whom he married October 10 of this year.

Little and his bride honeymooned in Jamaica and it was the first time Little had traveled outside the country. He would eventually like to go to Europe and Hawaii.

In his spare time, Little enjoys watching sports, particularly the Chiefs and Royals. He likes to fish but doesn’t get to do it as much as he’d like.

Little enjoys comedy and action movies and said rock n’ roll is his favorite genre of music. In fact, he wants to meet Mick Jagger someday.

“I like rock n’ roll because it’s upbeat and has some excitement to it; and it’s good workout music,” Little said.

Little’s favorite quote is, “A fool can ask more questions than a wise man can answer.”

Inserting his personality into and offering his interpretation of the phrase, Little said, “I may be the fool or the wise man depending on the situation.”

Linda Pederson, senior drawing control operator, retired on Nov. 19 after 33 years of employment at Smith & Loveless.

Pederson, who began at S&L as a blue print machine operator in 1977, is now in the early stages of a cross-country R.V. adventure with her husband Blair, also a recent retiree.

Pederson said they would first head to Weslaco, Tex., where they will spend time with friends, before visiting Quartzsite, Ariz., San Diego, Ca., and later, the state of Alaska.

Although she gladly counted down the days to her retirement, Pederson said she’ll miss the many relationships she has formed at S&L over the years.

“There are some good people here, definitely,” Pederson said. “Whether they think they are or not, they’re good people to work with.”
