Invite San Mateo County Students to a “Digital Call to Write”

Give your students a chance to win a tour of Facebook’s Menlo Park Campus while engaging them in Common Core curricula!

To honor digital citizenship month, SMCOE, RESPECT! 24/7, and the STEM CENTER are hosting a local contest for the joint California Writing Project (CWP) and Common Sense Media “Digital Call to Write” initiative. The San Mateo contest will run from April 15th to May 24th. Students will write to the following (CWP) prompt and present the content in any variety of digital formats:

What does it mean to be an upstander? In a digital genre of your choosing, share a real-life example of an upstander. The upstander you choose to write about can be historic, public, or personal. Illustrate how and why this person is an upstander by using current or past events. Explain how the events and the person have served as a call to action to you, the writer.

CONTEST RULES – DIGITAL CALL TO WRITE

Digital Citizenship Month in San Mateo County

To honor Digital Citizenship Month, RESPECT! 24/7 is hosting a local contest for the “Digital Call to Write” project. The contest will run from April 15th to May 24th. 1. How to Enter To submit entries, simply post student work on the RESPECT! 24/7 Facebook page (available at: https://www.facebook.com/Respect24.7SMC) or email the student work to Christina Simpson ([email protected]), who will then post the work on the Facebook page. Please include (either in a Facebook message or the email) your students’ names, the name and address of your school, and your phone number at school. Entries will not be considered if they are incomplete, late, or not able to be viewed due to technical error on the entrant’s part. Entries must be submitted by midnight (PDT) May 24, 2013. All students must have a signed consent form (attached) on file with their teacher or adult sponsor. 2. Entry Criteria Entries must be in digital format. Entrant must produce an essay on the following topic: Topic : Upstanders, Not Bystanders – What does it mean to be an upstander? In a digital genre of your choosing, share a real-life example of an upstander. The upstander you choose to write about can be historic, public, or personal. Illustrate how and why this person is an upstander by using current or past events. Explain how the events and the person have served as a call to action to you, the writer. As you adapt the writing prompt for your instructional purposes, consider how using digital tools will best help your students as they research, compose, digitally format, and publish their work. Some of the digital genres you may select are:

• Video/Digital essays • Podcasts of students reading their

writing • Glogster posters • Animotos • Blogs or similar forums and networks • Teacher/class websites or Wikispaces • Teacher/class Facebook pages • Photostory

• Mhystro • Comic Life • SchoolTube • Movies (iMovies or Movie Maker) • e-publishing and iBooks • Voice Thread • Twitter • Google apps for student publishing

3. Start/End Dates Contest begins at 12:00 a.m. PDT on April 15, 2013, and ends at 11:59 p.m. PDT on May 24, 2013.

4. Eligibility The contest is open to K – 12 students attending a public or private school in San Mateo County. Students will be judged in their grade category. The grade categories are as follows: Grades K – 2; Grades 3 – 5; Grades 6 – 8; Grades 9 – 12. 5. Judging Criteria The contest winner in each grade category will be selected by a panel of judges. Each entry will be judged based on the following criteria, with equal weight being given to each: relevance of submission to topic, artistic composition, cohesiveness, organization, creativity, writing style, and grammar. The winner of each grade category will be chosen by May 30th, and each winner’s teacher will be notified by email or phone. Decisions of the judges are final and binding in all matters relating to the contest. 6. Teacher Support SMCOE STEM CENTER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT! April 17, 2013 – 21st Century Skills of Digital Citizenship + CCSS – Register here! The event is from 4 to 6 p.m. at the San Mateo County Office of Education, STEM Center. Media and technology impact the way students think, play, learn, and develop. While parents are the primary adults helping guide students to appropriate ways to utilize technology, this presentation will focus on tools educators can access to build more positive school and community environments and to encourage “cyber citizenship.” Come learn about practical (and free!) programs already aligned to the Common Core and NETS standards created specifically for each major grade band (Elementary, Middle, High School). This presentation will include a look at the current landscape of students and technology, the Common Core aligned tools that are FREE to educators, and best practices regarding digital citizenship. Merve Lapus, Education Program Manager for Common Sense Media, supports a network of schools throughout California to share and implement the various education tools that Common Sense Media has created for K-12 schools. May 8, 2013 – Technology and California’s Common Core State Standards – Register here! The training is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the San Mateo County Office of Education, STEM Center. The session will provide an overview of how technology is integrated into the CCSS. Participants will learn key strategies for implementing technology into current instructional practices to support and reach the rigor of the CCSS.
