CalSouthern ScholarsThe learners of California Southern University are a diverse and successful group of accomplished individuals. While most of our learners reside in the United States, many others live around the world. They represent a wide variety of professions and educational experiences, and they also share the challenges of balancing careers, personal lives, and education.

Many of our learners choose CalSouthern because their travel, job and family commitments interfere with traditional campus-based courses and fixed class schedules. Other learners choose CalSouthern because they realize that professional career success depends on what you know and the degrees you have earned.

CalSouthern is known for providing an adult approach to higher education. Our goal is to serve the individual needs of our learners’ lifestyles through online distance learning, providing the individual attention they need to ensure success.

California Southern University was established in the state of California in 1978 for the purpose of meeting the educational needs of working adults who could not attend traditional educational institutions due to professional, personal, or financial constraints.

CalSouthern recognized that work, personal obligations, and lack of accessibility created obstacles that prevented degree seeking adults from realizing their dreams. CalSouthern responded to this need by providing access to a high quality education through distance and online learning. Today, the CalSouthern student body is made up of learners from all over the world who are interested in advancing their lives through education.

Freddie Williams, MA, RASSchool of Behavioral Sciences California

School of Behavioral Sciences

Having overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges—addiction, poverty, homeless-ness, an abusive father, incarceration and HIV infection—Freddie is now a leader in his community, working in addiction counseling, HIV education and prevention, as well as life skills training.

A skilled clinician, he has served on numerous boards and is a sought-after motivational speaker. Freddie is enrolled in CalSouthern’s PsyD program, and is developing an innovative treatment for recovering addicts.

California Southern University’s School of Behavioral Sciences offers a variety of psychology degrees to meet your educational and career needs, whether you’ve only recently developed an interest in psychology or you’re a seasoned practitioner looking to obtain your doctorate.

At the undergraduate level, the BA in psychology is a well-rounded degree that’s perfectly suited for a wide variety of careers or graduate school options. It provides a comprehensive foundational education with an emphasis on science and human behavior. The research and oral and written communication skills you’ll develop will pay dividends throughout your professional life.

The MA program is the degree track for those who are drawn to helping people with emotional or relationships issues—it’s the most direct path to licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of California. The MS program provides options to concentrate your studies in psychological disciplines such as chemical dependency and compulsive disorders, pastoral counseling, organizational psychology, sports psychology, and general psychology.

On the doctoral level, CalSouthern offers the Doctor of Psychology. The PsyD differs from a PhD in that it is an applied degree, clinically focused, designed for those inclined toward counseling, therapy, and clinical work, rather than research and academics.

CalSouthern also offers a variety of online certificate programs in popular or emerging psychology disciplines such as sports psychology, alcoholism and chemical dependency, organizational psychology, and pastoral counseling. The coursework is graduate-level, and a bachelor’s degree is required to participate in the program. However, that degree need not be in psychology, so anyone with a bachelor’s and an interest in the subject matter can enroll. The certificate programs can be used to position yourself for career advancement, for personal satisfaction, or as a way to “test the waters” of CalSouthern’s graduate school programs—the credits you earn while completing the certificate program may be applied to your master’s degree.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in psychology has been one of the nation’s most popular undergraduate degrees for decades—and for good reason. It’s a wonderfully balanced degree that imparts knowledge and skills well-suited for a wide variety of careers and graduate-school options. It gives students a well-rounded grounding in science and human behavior. It requires higher-order reasoning, as well as an ability to read and synthesize complex information effectively, and it hones students’ oral and written communication skills.

CalSouthern’s BA program combines 30 credit hours of general education courses with 24 credit hours of required psychology courses, 21 credit hours of psychology-related elective courses and 45 credits of general elective coursework. Graduates will have a broad-based exposure to the humanities, mathematics, and the natural and social sciences. In addition, they will have conducted an in-depth and multi-faceted exploration of psychology, from abnormal psychology, human development and cognition, to behavior modification, the psychology of human sexuality, and marriage and family issues.

Students in the BA program will benefit from all of CalSouthern’s educational resources, including a proprietary online learning platform that is sophisticated and robust, but extremely intuitive and easy to learn. Office 365 is offered at no additional charge and provides access to popular Microsoft Office applications at any time, on virtually any device.

Students also enjoy a state-of-the-art online library with access to many of the most popular and robust article databases, thousands of full-text e-books, more than 400 hours of video devoted to psychotherapy, and a wealth of research and writing tools. Integrated with the curriculum is the Taylor Study Method, an innovative and time-proven learning system that helps students better synthesize and retain the material, as well as provides valuable, early-stage preparation for licensing examinations.

Practicum courses give students supervised clinical experience. In addition, while in the practicum courses, students will be able to share these experiences—and gain from those shared by fellow students’—in web conferences facilitated by CalSouthern’s director of clinical training. Students can also interact with and ask questions of renowned scholars, authors and practitioners by attending—virtually or in person—CalSouthern’s acclaimed Master Lecture Series.

The PsyD program culminates in the doctoral project. It’s a true capstone to a student’s academic journey, providing the opportunity to study—in great depth—the topic within psychology about which the student is most passionate. It is one of the most challenging and personally rewarding academic pursuits a student can undertake.

“I have a very specialized, unique area of interest: changing our penal system in the United States, focusing on restorative justice and inmate self-education. I often was given the flexibility to focus elements of my work—and certainly my doctoral project—on this topic. In most cases, I wasn’t forced to digest material or perform activities that meant little to my career.

Almost everything I did enhanced my ability to become an authority in the field that I have chosen. I think this is a true rarity in education.” Julie Myers, PsyD School of Behavioral Sciences California

DBA | DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

The CalSouthern Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree is designed to give working professionals the advanced business knowledge and practical skills required of senior leadership in today’s complex, globalized and technologically driven business world. Students often enroll in the DBA program to prepare themselves for a leadership position in their current organization, to make a career change or to start a business of their own. It’s a great opportunity for MBAs and others to gain additional business expertise at the highest academic level and to distinguish themselves from the competition in a challenging job market.

CalSouthern’s DBA program is unique in that it is both comprehensive and specialized. Required core courses give students a very broad-based business education at the highest academic level. However, more than 20 percent of the program is devoted to a doctoral project that allows students to dive deeply into a topic of their choosing that is of special interest to them. It is one of the richest and most personally rewarding academic challenges a student can undertake—and can establish graduates as a bona fide expert in their field of study.

The faculty in the DBA program are gifted, highly credentialed (all DBA faculty have doctoral degrees) educators who are also experienced professionals in their areas of expertise. CalSouthern’s lectures enable students to learn from and interact with thought leaders from iconic companies like Oracle, Marriott and IBM. Students can attend these lectures live, either in person at CalSouthern’s campus or via streaming video. Students also can watch videos of past lectures on-demand.

“My strongest memories of my experience at CalSouthern involve the process of completing my doctoral project. Friends and associates had told me horror stories about doctoral project committees and the defense of the project. But my committee chair was terrific. I met every Friday for one to two hours with her, and occasionally on Saturdays, as well.

She put so much effort and so much of her time into guiding and encouraging me through the process. Other members of the committee were extremely helpful in honing my writing. I wasn’t out there by myself. I had people to support me the whole way.”

School of Law - www.calsouthern.edu/law

Welcome to the California Southern University School of Law. CalSouthern has been providing non-traditional educational opportunities in law since 1994. Because we offer a distance-learning program of study, you can earn your law degree while keeping up with family and work obligations. This flexibility makes legal education available to applicants who meet our admissions criteria and have the drive and commitment to succeed. Our affordable tuition ensures that you won’t have to take out tens of thousands of dollars in educational debt in order to realize your dream of becoming a lawyer in California.

As a CalSouthern law student, you will enjoy a level of personal attention that is all too rare in higher education. Our superb faculty of licensed attorneys provides learners with detailed individual feedback on all of their work. All assignments, projects, and examinations are evaluated and graded by our attorney professors.

Our program places emphasis on the skills needed to successfully pass both the California First Year Law Students’ Examination and the California Bar Examination. Our JD program emphasizes legal writing throughout the entire first year of law study. Courses challenge you to think critically, to apply the law to facts, and to clearly communicate – all crucial skills for anyone with a legal education.

California Southern University’s online law degree programs are designed to be flexible and convenient, accommodating the busy schedules of the mature, non-traditional, working student. Students can study at their own pace, without compromising their personal and professional obligations. With monthly course starts, you can begin working toward your law degree immediately.

But don’t confuse “flexible and convenient” with “easy.” CalSouthern’s online law degree programs are challenging and academically rigorous. You’ll be using the same legal case books and materials as those used at brick-and-mortar law schools across the country.

At CalSouthern, you won’t be alone. You’ll have the support of the law school faculty, administration, and staff every step of the way. Even the deans will be available to provide guidance and encouragement. It’s what distinguishes CalSouthern from other law schools and it’s something we take great pride in. We have a long-standing tradition of judging our performance by your satisfaction and your success.

Choosing Your Program27

CalSouthern’s Master of Science in Law (MSL) is a unique and innovative degree program designed for those interested in a master’s-level study of law, but who are not interested in practicing law as an attorney. It appeals to a wide variety of adult learners, from business executives seeking an advanced knowledge of law to better manage a corporate legal team, to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to properly structure and launch a business or to those looking to build a career in law in areas such as litigation support. It also may be an excellent degree choice for human resources professionals, policy makers or law office administrators.

Students in CalSouthern’s MSL program will study many of the subjects that make up the core curriculum of law school study, including torts, contracts, criminal and constitutional law, business associations and property. Other areas of study include immigration law, wills, trusts and estates, international law and intellectual property. It’s a rigorous, challenging and extremely enriching curriculum that provides a comprehensive, graduate-level understanding of law.

Students will be mentored by faculty who are experienced, responsive law professors, as well as practicing attorneys and experts in their fields. They will utilize their real-world experience as they help students apply what they learn to real-world legal issues and factual scenarios.

The MSL does not qualify graduates to sit for the California Bar Examination.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN LAW DISCLOSUREThe method of instruction at this law school for professional law degree programs other than for the Juris Doctor degree is principally by correspondence.

Completion of a professional law degree program at this law school other than for the Juris Doctor degree does not qualify a student to take the California Bar Examination or to satisfy the requirements for admission to practice law in California. It may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or to satisfy the requirements for admission to the practice of law in any other jurisdiction. A student intending to seek admission to practice law should contact the admitting authority in the jurisdictions where the student intends to seek to qualify to sit for the bar examination or for admission to practice for information regarding the legal education requirements in that jurisdiction for admission to the practice of law.

End of Required Disclosure.

Please note that although the MSL program at CalSouthern School of Law is an entirely online program, the Committee of Bar Examiners defines a distance-learning law school as one that “conducts instruction and provides interactive classes principally by technological means.” Although all instruction is conducted online, CalSouthern School of Law does not offer interactive classes and is therefore categorized as a correspondence law school by the Committee of Bar Examiners.

CalSouthern’s Juris Doctor (JD) degree provides the convenience and flexibility required by busy, working professionals who wish to pursue a law degree and ultimately become a licensed attorney. Graduates of the program who have complied with Title 4, Division 1 of the Rules of the State Bar of California will be eligible to sit for the California Bar Examination.

The JD curriculum is extremely rigorous, with an emphasis placed on the development of effective analytical reasoning, as well as the cultivation of ethical responsibility. Required courses include contacts, torts, property, criminal and civil procedure, constitutional law and legal writing, among others. Included among the variety of elective course options are environmental law, domestic relations, real estate transactions and alternative dispute resolution.

Although the coursework is delivered 100-percent online via CalSouthern’s state-of-the-art learning platform, the curriculum is similar to that of traditional law schools. In fact, many of the casebooks and materials used in this program are also used in the nation’s most prestigious law schools. The courses and their sequencing have been chosen to meet the requirements of the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California.

The CalSouthern JD faculty is comprised of dedicated, responsive educators who are also practicing attorneys with experience in the subjects which they teach. They work with students one-on-one to answer their questions and to apply concepts and legal principles to real-world factual scenarios.

CalSouthern’s Online Law Library has a wealth of study resources and research tools. Students have access to the legal community’s two most widely used subscription legal databases—Westlaw and LexisNexis—as well as guides for their use. There is a legal writing center, with a large collection of research, writing and citation tools. In addition, students are provided Office 365 at no additional charge.

“I would highly recommend CalSouthern and I have recommended it. But it has to be the right person. You need to be bright, self-motivated and willing to put in the work.“

Committee of Bar ExaminersThe Committee of Bar Examiners (CBE) of the State Bar of California has authorized registration of the California Southern University School of Law as an unaccredited correspondence law school, which enables graduates who have complied with the Admissions to sit for the California Bar Examination.

Method of Legal StudyCase analysis is the primary method of learning at most law schools and is the technique used at California Southern University School of Law.Students study from casebooks that contain actual cases selected to illustrate particular rules of law. Students often submit briefs of these cases, as they learn to apply the rule of law to the facts of a situation and reach a reasonable conclusion logically supported by the law.

JD | JURIS DOCTOR

Choosing Your Program29

JURIS DOCTOR DISCLOSUREThe following disclosure is required by the California Committee of Bar Examiners:

The method of instruction at this law school for the Juris Doctor (JD) degree program is principally by correspondence.

Students enrolled in the JD degree program at this law school who successfully complete the first year of law study must pass the First-Year Law Students’ Examination required by Business and Professions Code Section 6060(h) and Rule 4.55 of Title 4, Division 1, Chapter 5 of the Rules of the State Bar of California as part of the requirements to qualify to take the California Bar Examination. A student who passes the First-Year Law Students’ Examination within three (3) administrations of the examination after first becoming eligible to take it will receive credit for all legal studies completed to the time the examination is passed. A student who does not pass the examination within three (3) administrations of the examination after first becoming eligible to take it must be promptly disqualified from the law school’s JD degree program. If the dismissed student subsequently passes the examination, the student is eligible for re-enrollment in this law school’s JD program, but will receive credit for only one year of legal study.

Study at, or graduation from, this law school may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or to satisfy the requirements for admission to practice in jurisdictions other than California. A student intending to seek admission to practice law in a jurisdiction other than California should contact the admitting authority in that jurisdiction for information regarding the legal education requirements in that jurisdiction for admission to the practice of law. End of Disclosure.

* Under the California Committee of Bar Examiners’ rules, a “distance-learning law school” must require that students participate in not less than 135 hours of synchronous (live) interactive classes per year. Because so many CalSouthern learners reside in different time zones, work full time, and choose the flexibility of distance education, it would be an unreasonable hardship to require learners to be available on specific days and at specific times. Therefore, the university continues to offer a law program that does not require learners to participate in live classes and has elected to be classified as a “correspondence law school” under the rules of the California Committee of Bar Examiners, even though its programs are delivered entirely online. (It is important for learners to note that this classification has no bearing on a learner’s eligibility to sit for the California bar examination or admission to practice law in California.)

Transfer Applicants

California Southern University welcomes transfer learners from other law schools in accordance with the standards of the California Committee of Bar Examiners.

Applicants seeking advanced standing should have an official transcript of all previous law study submitted with the Application for Admission. An applicant who wishes to be admitted to the School of Law as a transfer student and who is studying for the California Bar Examination, must obtain from the Committee of Bar Examiners within 60 days of admission an Evaluation of Law Study Completed and Contemplated. (This evaluation examines past law study and the courses proposed to be taken at CalSouthern and determines whether this combined work will meet the requirements of the Committee of Bar Examiners).

California Southern University will assist transfer learners in the preparation of a proposed plan of study. A maximum of two years of transfer credit may be awarded. Official transcripts must be submitted to and accepted by the university, showing units from postsecondary institutions or law schools relied upon by the university for admission, showing the bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and any law school transfer units accepted toward the degree.

CalSouthern GraduationCalSouthern’s commencement ceremony marks the high point of the university’s academic calendar. It’s truly a joyous, momentous, and inspirational event.

Graduates travel to Southern California from across the country and around the world. Many linger for several days, taking the opportunity to enjoy the local beaches and attractions or to visit nearby Los Angeles or San Diego.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, many graduates and their families stop by CalSouthern’s Irvine campus, visiting with their academic advisors and support staff they have worked so closely with throughout their academic program.

On graduation day, graduates have ample opportunity to spend time with CalSouthern faculty and to visit with their fellow learners that they have come to know over the course of their academic journey. The ceremony itself is always a moving event, with inspirational and celebratory speeches from University President Dr. Caroll Ryan, student representatives from the graduating class, as well as respected and acclaimed keynote speakers.

The highlight, however, is the opportunity for graduates to walk across the stage individually—as their family and friends are publicly acknowledged—and shake the hands of their deans and President Ryan, with a commemorative medal and/or doctoral hood presented to them in honor of this tremendous academic achievement .

It is a moment that you will never forget, and a fitting culmination of a challenging yet supremely rewarding academic journey.
