This year has started with
the loss of very valuable
individuals within CSHA.
We were advised of the
passing of Alice Yaryan
from Region 11, Emmett
DeLaFosse who was past
First Vice President in
approx.1987, Jack Abra-
ham from Region 5, Gary
Gustafson from Region 4,
Ira Sullivan from Region 5,
and Norm Sims who was
State President in 2000-04.
Each of these individuals
has been major supporters
and contributors to CSHA.
Because of their tireless
efforts CSHA has grown to
what is today. We all have
memories of what each one
has brought to this organi-
zation; I have had the
honor of knowing some of
them personally.
Building on what these peo-
ple have left in our trust, I
know we will continue to
grow!
On a happier note, I at-
tended the Horse Expo in
Pomona and met with a
number of CSHA members
and non- members that
came to the booth. I would
like to thank Ingrid LeMas-
ters, Region 11 President,
and Helen Johnson from
Region 11 for coordinating
the booth. I would like to
also thank Ron Jenkins,
State First V.P., Carol
Grey, Southern Area V.P.,
and Pam McLain, President
Region 12. They handled
the breakdown of the booth
on Sunday. It was good to
see representatives from
some of our clubs also put-
ting in time at the booth.
As always we were repre-
sented by our State Royalty,
with our 2014 Sr. Miss,
McKensey Middleton, Sr.
Ambassador, Phillip
McCabe, and our Little
Miss, Sarenna Ben-Zeev. If
vendors did not know who
we were before, they did
that weekend. Thank You
to our Royalty.
Thanks to all.
James Hendrickson CSHA President
Royalty—Miss CSHA 2014
For the past month I was
able to represent CSHA in
a number of events. I was
able to attend the Region 5
awards banquet with six
other royalty members.
Region 5 had the Cattle-
man's Restaurant packed
with people supporting and
receiving awards. That
same week I went to quar-
terly in Santa Nella with
other royalty title holders.
The month was wrapped up
with my little sister Morgan
and I attending the Mother
Lode Round Up Queen
Competition Kick Off.
There we where able to
meet many other rodeo
queens, aspiring rodeo
queens, and royalty was
invited to a Royal Rag Ex-
change which date is yet to
be reset.
Finally I was able to attend
the Pomona Horse Expo
with Philip McCabe and
Sarenna Benz-Zeev, our
Senior Ambassador and
Little Miss of 2014. We
were able to talk to venders
and gain sponsorships and
connections with many
businesses, organizations,
and individuals. I look for-
ward to giving you all an-
other update in royalty af-
fairs next month.

Drill Team
The drill team program kicked off the
year early with a “2014 Compulsory
Drill Seminar” held at Leone Eques-
trian Center, the home arena of the
Sacramento Sheriff’s Posse teams.
The Posse teams provided a delicious
pasta lunch. Two teams of eight and
twelve riders learned the 2014 com-
pulsory drill step by step and by the
end of the day provided the observers
with a full run through of the drill.
CSHA Judges were on hand to test
out the new format judges sheets as
well offer advise to attendees.
January also saw the kickoff of our
2nd annual Spring Raffle. The raffle
girls are superb ambassadors for our
sport.
Parade
The parade season kicks off this
month beginning with the Clover-
dale and Ripon parades. Last
month, Alice Lawellin and myself
met with our newest members, the
Mid Valley unit of the national or-
ganization of the Backcountry
Horsemen. They are very excited
about their membership as both a
mounted group and a color guard
unit.
Our January Quarterly meeting in
Santa Nella saw twelve members in
attendance. Paulette Webb and
Mark Overby both gave great re-
ports on the upcoming State Cham-
pionship Parade and the Awards
Banquet that follows scheduled for
June 14, 2014 in conjunction with
the Livermore Rodeo Parade. Pam
Michalek has worked very hard
with the webmaster Marie Grisham
for CSHA on the parade program
website. Pam gave an informative
update and she is also requesting
that we all send her photographs of
past and present paraders to make
the site more personal. You may
reach Pam at [email protected]
Our next worthwhile event will be a
grooming and parade readiness semi-
nar. This is to be a fundraising event
and the presenter will be longtime
parader Kassi Gutierrez. It will be a
multi-program benefit shared with the
Backcountry Horsemen and CSHA
Royalty Program. The seminar will
be held Saturday March 15, 2014 at
the Cunningham Ranch in Manteca
from 10 AM to 2 PM. The cost is
$10.00 per person with no charge for
children under 12 years of age. The
proceeds from the seminar will go to
the parade program. A delicious
lunch will be prepared by the Back-
country Horsemen members and the
proceeds will go to their organization.
They will also have information avail-
able about their membership and I
know I some of us will want to join
them in their important trail endeav-
ors that many of us enjoy. The CSHA
Royalty program will have a bake sale
and raffle ticket sale available to
benefit their scholarship program.
Please make this first time event a
success by attending or have some
members of your group attend. We
can all have a good time with old
and new friends learning new tech-
niques of being prepared for your
special parade days ahead. Find
out what the Backcountry Horse-
men is all about while also support-
ing both the CSHA Royalty and
Parade programs. I hope to see you
there.
Sincerely,
Candy Graham
Region 14 at the Yucaipa Parade

the State Championship
competition in May.
