The 30,000-square-foot interdisciplinary agricultural research center, located on the campus farm at the corner of Barstow and Woodrow avenues, is the first of its kind in the California State University system. The facility features three floors of dry and wet research laboratories, flexible space and meeting rooms for Fresno State students and faculty to conduct advanced studies on agriculture, food and water. Made possible by a $29.5 million dollar gift to Ag One from Hanabul “Bud” and Dee Jordan family in 2009, the research center is designed to foster collaboration between students and faculty in Fresno State’s Jordan College, Lyles College of Engineering and College of Science and Mathematics, as well as industry partners.

ABOUT OUR 2020 GRAPE DAY PRESENTERS
Luca Brillante, Ph.D. Co-presenter Khushwinder Singh, Viticulture & Enology Graduate Student
Email: [email protected] Dr. Luca Brillante began his service to Fresno State in August 2018 when he accepted the position of Bronco Wine Co. Viticulture Chair and Assistant Professor of Viticulture (wine grapes) in the
Department of Viticulture and Enology. Luca received his Ph.D.in Soil Science -Viticulture from the Universite de Bourgogne in France. Prior to coming to Fresno State, he employed as a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Department of Viticulture & Enology at UC Davis, working on precision viticulture and implementation of variable rate and site specific management approaches. At Fresno State, he focuses on wine grape production and vineyard management and teaches in the areas of general viticulture, mechanized viticulture, and advanced grape and vine enterprise management in cooperation with the campus vineyard and winery management personnel. In addition, Brillante serves as the
Viticulture and Enology Graduate Program Coordinator, advises students, supervises student research projects, and engages in a rigorous scientific research program. Dr. Brillante will be joining graduate student and Jordan College of Ag Harvey Graduate Scholar Khushwinder Singh on the 2020 Grape Day program during a presentation on vineyard soil reclamation by different forms and doses of CaS04 amendments in the San Joaquin Valley of California.
Rachel Naegele, Ph.D

Dr. Rachel Naegele received her Master’s and PhD from Michigan State University where she grew to love plant breeding and pathology. In 2015, she joined the USDA ARS as a Research Horticulturalist for table and raisin grape breeding with an emphasis on abiotic and biotic stress resistance. Her translational-based research program uses germplasm evaluations, population genetics, and genomics to address real world problems in pest management and breeding. Naegle will be a guest speaker on the 2020 Fresno State Grape Day program.
Dennis Nef, Ph.D –Jordan College of Ag Dean
In July 2019, Dr. Dennis Nef returned to the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology as Dean after serving in several key university leadership positions in his previous 35
years on the Fresno State campus as an administrator and faculty member. Most recently he has served as vice provost from July 2014 to June 2019 after being appointed as an associate vice president in 2011. Nef’s prior service to the Jordan College of Ag includes the following positions: acting dean (fall of 1997); associate dean (1995 to 2003); department chair of the Agricultural Economics Department (five years). His areas of teaching and research seven prior years as a professor and lecturer included agricultural policy, natural resources, trade and land/water economics. We appreciate Dr. Nef’s dedicated leadership within the Jordan College of Ag and university and are pleased to receive his welcome on the Grape Day program.
Miguel Pedroza, Ph.D.

Dr. Miguel Pedroza joined the Fresno State Department of Viticulture and Enology as an Assistant Professor of Enology in August 2017 where he teaches multiple enology courses and conducts
research. He received a Ph.D. in Enology from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain where he specialized in grape and wine analysis, and in strategies for converting grape marc (winery by-product) into an enological additive. Prior to his Ph.D., Pedroza earned a B.S. in Food Science Engineering from Monterrey Tech in Mexico and fulfilled two undergraduate internships in enology and viticulture in Bordeaux, France and in Oregon. He also worked as an assistant enologist in France and participated in industry oriented research. During his postdoctoral period at the Institute of Cognitive Science CNRS in Lyon, France, Pedroza explored how wine chemosensory stimuli (color and aroma), together with genetic traits,
modulate our sensory experience of wine flavor. He is fascinated by how wine chemosensory stimuli our perception of flavor in the human brain. Since 2014, he regularly participates as a professional wine judge at national and international wine competitions. Pedroza’s graduate students Kori Munk and Robert Herrell will be co-presenting with him at Grape Day.

Dr. Anil Shrestha joined the Department of Viticulture and Enology in 2018 as Department Chair where he provides leadership to the academic program, faculty, staff, and students; responsible for the administration, development, and operations of all academic responsibilities within the
viticulture and enology program. In this capacity, he works directly with the Viticulture and Enology Research Center (VERC) Director, the University Agricultural Laboratory (UAL) Manager, and the grape and wine industry. Prior to joining the Department of Viticulture and Enology, Dr. Shrestha taught weed science in the Plant Science Department and was involved in several viticulture research projects at Fresno State. His primary research area is integrated vegetation management in agricultural and non-agricultural systems. Particular research interests include weed biology and ecology, crop-weed competition, herbicide-resistance management, environmental aspects of
vegetation management, cropping systems, agroecology, conservation tillage, IPM, and organic farming. Dr. Shrestha served on the 2020 Grape Day Committee.

Dr. Stephan Sommer joined Fresno State's viticulture and enology program in the spring of 2019 as the Director of the Viticulture and Enology Research Center (VERC). Prior to this, he was the
academic program director and an Assistant Professor of Fermentation Sciences at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. He brings more than eight years industry experience in various fields of beverage production including wineries, sparkling wine companies, breweries, table water production, and related fields like laboratories and industrial flavor production. Dr. Sommer managed a commercial beverage laboratory and was involved in research projects and student education for the German wine industry before coming to the USA in 2013.
Sommer’s main research focus is on physical product stability, beverage microbiology, and wine aging. In his position at Fresno State he emphasizes and further develops research in the areas of grape growing, wine chemistry, and wine production. In addition, he will coordinate laboratory work, supervise student research projects, and engage in a rigorous grant writing and scientific research program. Dr. Sommer will be discussing the use of polysaccharides in wine production during his Grape Day presentation. He also served on the 2020 Grape Day Planning Committee.
Kristy (Qun) Sun, Ph.D. Email: [email protected]
Dr. Kristy Sun received her Ph.D. in wine chemistry from Cornell University. The focus of her dissertation was on chemosensory and viticultural studies of hybrid grape and resulting
wines. Before joining the Department of Viticulture and Enology at Fresno State in August 2017, she was appointed as a Food Scientist at the International Food Network (now Covance Food Solutions) where she conducted food/beverage development and reformulation using instrumental analysis and sensory evaluation. She also previously taught Food Analysis for the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at Fresno State. Her research interests are grape/wine aroma and flavor compound identification, the impact of viticultural practices on grape and wine quality, developing new analytical techniques for measurement of grape and wine
components, determining the relationship between sensory attributes and wine composition. Sun will be presenting her research on the impact of deficit irrigation and mechanical leafing on yield and berry and wine composition of Cabernet Sauvignon in the San Joaquin Valley during Grape Day.
Viticulture and Enology Graduate Student Presenters Robert Herrell grew up in the Northern California town of Grass Valley and graduated from UC Davis in 2017 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He spent the next two years working in wineries throughout California, Missouri, and New Zealand. He joined the Master’s program for Viticulture and Enology at Fresno State in 2019, where he studies the use of biopotentials as a tool for measuring emotional response to wine odorants, under Dr. Miguel Pedroza.

Kori Munk joined the Master’s program in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at Fresno State where she works under the direction of Dr. Miguel Pedroza.
Khushwinder Singh was born and raised in Punjab, India. He completed his bachelors in General Agriculture from Khalsa College, Amritsar (2013-2017) and moved to America in July 2018 to pursue his Masters in Viticulture & Enology at California State University, Fresno. He works with Dr. Luca
Brillante on a project of physiological response of grapevine to salt stress and their reclamation by use of different forms and doses of gypsum. Khushwinder is enthusiastic about using his knowledge to lead the resolution on new and current issues. To keep the wine flowing in the central valley of grape growing and wine production, it is required to develop new and improved management practices to generate sufficient yield. He is passionate about working on grape growing and wine production to develop the best quality and quantity of wine in Central California.

Cynthia Wood is the Program-Outreach and Event Coordinator for the viticulture and enology program at Fresno State. Her responsibilities include developing and coordinating educational, outreach, and fundraising events for the viticulture and enology research and academic programs. Cynthia works closely with the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and industry in her position. She holds a B.A. in liberal studies from Fresno State and has served the viticulture and enology programs at this institution since 1981. Cynthia served on the 2020 Grape Day Organizing Committee.
