The footprints wenton for about one mile and ended age Inat the road. Apparently an unknownhiker located the crash one or moredays earlier and, thinking that it was anold wreck, did not contact theauthoritie . Other footprints had alsob n spotted in the same general areaby everal pilots during the search. The ightings generated optimismthat there might have been survivors. The aircraft. a Ces n 172, white withbrown trim, had departed Palm Springs

AIrport at 21: 19 on November 28.1982, on a VFR flight to Palomar Air-

port. The pilot did not file a flight planon this last leg of the flight from LakeHavasu. There were three persons onboard, and II wa unknown wh therthe raft was b in piloted by theowner or her pilot friend. Th raft'olor, the terrain and n w made thwre k almost impossible to see fromthe air.Bad weather in the search area forthe first three days after the era h

ByFriday the weather cleared completely, allowing a full scale search effort.Twenty- ix aircraft parti ipated th t firstday, and 49 air raft were Involved onthe second and last day of this mo t in-tensive search effort. 0

CAP Team Participates in Chili Cook-Offby Lt. Cot, Ed Crank shaw , CA P8:00 A.M.: A beautiful morning on

the Monterey Peninsula. The twelvecooking teams, arriving at close inter-vals, busied themselves setting uptables, stoves, cutting boards ... andgenerally preparing their work areas.Occasionally a face would be raisedto the sky, to observe the rapidlydissipating mist, or bask in the warmingmorning sunlight.Soon, the tables were laden with avariety of supplies: packages of beef, everything from stew-cut chunks torough-ground; cans of tomato paste, sauce, juice or stewed tomato chunks;packets of spices, some clearly marked, others premixed in plain containers ...some marked "top secret;" wholeonions, peppers (of all kinds); here andthere a can marked "Alpo dog chow"or "Meow Mix cat food." On onetable. amid the clutter. we found twoflat cans simply marked "RED MAN,"on another, a tin of "rattlesnake meat, chunky" was proudly displayed. It wasobvious these people were completelyserious about their chili "rnakins."All this preparation kept the teamstoo busy for any tension to build.9:00 A.M.: The contest managercame around with boxes of contest

supplies: T-shirts, aprons andtablecovers for the cooking teammembers; buttons for the Booster teammembers. The contest sponsor, the local Bud-weiser distr ibutor thoughtfully provid-ed a van-load of Bud ... a case per

team, and a back-up supply for theBoosters, along with styrofoam coolersand ice.10:30 A.M.: The head judge outlinedthe cook-off rules ... more for theedification of the crowd than the cooks.

"From eleven to twelve is preparationtime, from twelve to three, cookingtime. At three, we judge the results."Some of the cooking team membersare starting to get downright edgy atthis point.11:00 A.M.: "Man your knives andchoppers. "With the boisterous applause of theBoosters spurring them on. the cooking

team members busied themselves slic-ing meat, dicing onions, chopping avariety of peppers, cutting and mincingtomatoes, melding together variousmysterious mixtures of spices and"secret ingredients" ... some did thisbehind hastily erected tablecloth"wails ..... preparing their mixesaccording to old family recipes until ...

12:00 oon: "Light your fires,"shouted the contest manager.Soon the tantalizing odor of frying

meats, onions, peppers, and whoknows what mixed with that of thechopped vegetables and spices ... andthe Booster teams found their numbersbeing swelled by fair-goers from alldirections, responding to the appeal ofthe atmosphere surrounding the cook-off site. The Monterey County Fair "Chili-

    con-Bud" Texas-style Chili Cook-offwas well and truly underway.Among this year's contestants was

the team billing Itself as the "High Fly-ing Pipers Chill and Beer Lovers Socie-ty, Unlimited," led by Capt. MaryBassett, deputy commander of Mon-terey's Cypress Senior Squadron 33.Her teammates were Senior MembersRich Brassfield and Sharon LaCalmita. Her husband, Capt. John Bassett, doubled as Booster and First Taster.Maj. James Crispelle, Squadron 33commander, led the booster team ...assisted by Senior Member Ed Jarvisand other members of the SalinasVal ley Highlanders, who entertainedthe crowd with a breath-taking displayof piping.During the cooking time, much

visiting took place between teams:"How's it corning!" "Pretty good. Here, have a taste." "Have you guysgot any beer left? Our cook used thelast can in the chili." "Check withRalph ... he'll get you another case.""Hey. taste this. Good, huh?" "Yeah.Good Luck. But I know we'll win ... "2:50 P.M.: Each team has been givena quart-sized container with their entrynumber printed on the bottom ... and

told to fill it directly from the pot andgive it to the "collector" when hecomes around with the tray. All thecontainers look alike, 50 the entries aretruly anonymous. The tension is thicker than the chili.3:00 P.M.: The collector comesaround, and carries all twelve con-tainers to the judges' chambers. The cooking tables are immediatelymobbed by the Boosters, and thecrowd ... permission has been given tothe cooking teams to distribute the restof the chili in little tasting cups to allwho want samples.Everybody wants a sample.By 3:20 the crowd is fed, and beginsthe nervous, jittery waiting for thejudges to announce their verdicts ...they judge by the formula TACA: Taste,Aroma, Consistency and Appearance.

Three prizes will be given in each ofthree categories: Best Showmanship bya Team, BestChil i by a Team represent-ing a town, and Best Over-all Chili."The High Flying Pipers Chili andBeer Lovers Society, Unl imited wins S -cond Place in Showmanship, and Third

In the Best Over-all Chil i category."Capt. Bassett's comment was, "Thiswas our first year ... we'll do better in'83. Meanwhile, if anybody from TexasWing wants to lend us an 'old familyrecipe' ... ?" 0

    Comm Column*************************

by Maj. Ed Ryan, CAPDirector or Communications

CAPCOMM?! - First of all, CAPCOMM is a function, NOT a call sign.During the second half of 1982, the useof airborne radio relay increased con-siderably, specially in areas remotefrom CAP repeater coverage. The air-craft/aircrew performing this functionwere told in some instances to use theterm CAPCOMM astheir cal l sign. Thisis I CORRECT. When an aircraft/air-crew is used to perform CAPCOMMfunction, their call sign will be theBROWN BEARcall asso iated with thecraft.A r lated item: Attention MCO's andMe's: Fresno Compo Sq. 112 has

avai lable an airborn VHF-FM repeaterpackage that can b installed in aCessna 150. This will be of great valueshould there be any mi sions su h asAFRCC 8-1259, where aircraft weredeployed out of the range of anyrepeater and in some cases, severalhundred miles from the prime searchbas.COMMUNICATIONS PLAN UP-DATED - The California Wing Corn-munications Plan, publ ished as AnneK to the Operations Plan (OPLAN5510), has been revised. Dated 01December 1982, the plan should be inthe field well before this column ispublished. In addition to regular unlldistr ibut ion, each radio ration licenseewill be mailed a copy of the plan viatheir unit headquarters. This version isomewhat different than the one of1980. Wing Communications Is in theprocess of writing a California Wing

Manual 100-2, tentatively t it led "RadioOperator's Guide." This Is looselybased on the old HEDCAP Manual100-2. This manual will include sec-tions on message format, routing, officesymbols, and such other things thai theCAPM 100-' fail to cover.BYE BYE BLACK BEAR (BROWN

BEAR TOO)! . There are presently 156tactical call signs within the CAP com-munications system. In an attempt toreduc these, and as well to eliminatesome rather "tacky" calls, the NationalExecutive Committee (NEC) decreedthat when the time comes to renew thevarious Wing's tactical call signs, theybe renewed with th fixed station callfollowed by "Mobile," or ,.Aircraft."Thus California Wing units would beWhite Bear, White Bear Mobi le, WhiteBear Aircraft. Our ren wal date is notuntil 1985, and, although by then a dif-ferent NEC will be in office, once thefirst Wing starts the process, it willprobably be irrever ible. All statenames cannot be used as t.here are ap-proximately 20 state names already inuse as military tact ical calls. However,we are not locked in to using WHITEBEAR. Our preference would be a onesyllable word. uch as BEAR; but cer-tainly not more than the current twosyllables, WHITE BEARor REDWOOD.If you would like to suggest an alter-native tactical cal l word, send your sug-gestion, via letter, to California WingHeadqua rters/DC.This is White Bear 4 ... out! 0

The Personal Computer In Squadron Managementby Maj. David A. Rudawitz, CAPThe personal computer (microcom-

puter) can become a very importanttool in the effective management of aCAP squadron. Ranging in price fromseveral hundred dollars to several thou-sand dollars and up , the personal com-puter opens a new era in the manage-ment of personnel records, finance, correspondence preparation, public af-fairs and training. Using a combinationof available software and the custompreparation of programs In BASIC andPASCAL (two of the most commoncomputer languages used with micro-computers), almost all of the ad-ministrative functions of the squadroncan be assisted.Although several members of EIToro

Compo Sq. 88 have personal com-puters, three members have been ac-tively using their microcomputers toreduce some of the effort needed tomanage an active unit. The author hasan Apple III computer with a Prismprinter. Lt. Col. Robert Wood, squadron Emergency Services Officer, has a TRS-80 Level 3 microcomputerwith an Epson printer and uses hi tosupport the Emergency Services func-tion. Lt. Col. Pat Robinson uses an E x-Idy Sorcerer za o microcomputer with aC. Itoh letter-quality printer. The author has used his Apple III for a

number of applications within the unit.Using PFS (a product of Software

Publishing Corporation), which is adatabase management language with areport writer, a database is maintainedof all the members in the unit. Thisdatabase contains most of the informa-tion found in the members 201 (person-nel) file. Using the facilities of thereport writer, a number of reports andlists can be quickly prepared. These in-clude rosters, emergency servicescallout lists, and mailing labels allgenerated on a routine basis and allgenerated from the same basedata. Us-ing the interactive query capability ofthis program, special reports can begenerated for such things as cert if icateexpiration dates, awards, vehicle andaircraft equipment lists, form 5 renewaldates, etc.Using word processing software (Ap-

plewrlter III in this case), letters, per-sonnel actions, control lists, pressreleases, memos and reports can bequickly prepared and updated. All ofthese items can be retained on a flexi-ble disk and recalled at a future date forupdating or use as a core for thepreparation of a similar document.Special formats have been generatedfor letterhead, press releases, memosand even CAP form 2a. These are thenrecalled from the disk, as needed, andthe information filled In from thekeyboard to generate a letter or report, etc. II. is even possible to extract data

Sailplane Encampment Held by Group 15Group 15's glider program continued

to record milestones in late 1982 andearly 1983 with contlnuing activities atTwentynine Palms Airport in the highdesert northwest of Los Angeles. Capt.Marcia Willey of Orange County EagleFlight 20 is the sailplane program direc-tor.Late last year Group 15 held its an-nual sailplane encampment forSouthern California cadets. Fourteencadets participated and were givenover 90 instructional flights In the CAPSchweizer 2-33 sailplane. The highlightof the encampment was a solo flight bycadet Rock Skowbo from Sq. 131 afterjust five dual flights. There would havebeen more solo flights if more cadetshad acquired their necessary studentpilot' certificates.Cadets also received ground schoolinstruct ion and packets including The

Jo y or Soaring manual, log books andother pertinent flying information.Receiving encampment completion

certi ficates were cadets Chris Bell , Sq.61; Alex Ecarma. Sq.7; Steve Segura,Sq. 101; Rock Skowbo, Sq. 131;Shawnie Bruce and Charles Boyd, Sq.45; Shelli Sedlak, Sq. 47; Jay Daniel,Sq. 55; Eddie Haddad, Sq. 51; RoyOberhauser, Sq. 17; Beth Mayer andTodd Keifer, FIt. 20; Stuart Seeger andTom VanWaardenburg, Sq. 107.Bil leting (or the entire group was pro-

vided by the Twentynine Palms MarineCorps Combat Training Center. Cer-tified flight Instructors who donatedtheir time for this special event wereGroup 15 commander Maj. Ernie Pear-son: sailplane night manager Capt.Mike Willey and Capt. Ernie Zoeter.Orientation pilots assisting in flighttraining included Lt. Col. JohnMcMahon (also tow pilot) and thesailplane program director. Specialrecognition for assistance goes to Capt.Mark Williams, Sq. 107, Lt. from the data base and insert it into aleiter 0r report.Although the uses described aboveare quite extensive, they only representa small portion of the types of uses themicrocomputer can be put to in a unit.Using a spreadsheet program likeVisiCalc (a product of Personal Soft-ware, lnc.). squadron financial record-keeping can be automated. Other soft-ware packages are available that couldbe adapted to completely automatedfinance including the generation ofchecks. Other uses include thepreparation of training programs forCAl (computer aided instruction) andthe teaching of computer and elec-tronic principles to cadets and seniormembers alike. The advantages of having a personal

computer available in a unit are veryextensive and appealing. II would bewell worth the effort to recruit micro-computer enthusiasts into your unit. Tolearn more about the personal com-puter, make contact with a local com-puter store. You may also be able to geta local company to donate a computeror raise the funds to purchase one forthe unit. In any case, the personal com-puter will continue to have an ever in-creasing role in CAP and those unitsable to take advantage of thistechnology will be able to spend moretime with the other aspects of the CAPprogram.
