Many coaches struggle to find the right balance between success on the court and success in the classroom while empowering student-athletes to enjoy their experiences and letting their individual personalities shine. In three short years as the head coach at California, Lindsay Gottlieb has shown the ability to find the perfect balance in Berkeley by taking the program to unprecedented heights since being hired on April 25, 2011.

Since Gottlieb earned her first head coaching job in 2008-09, only nine coaches have taken their team to an NCAA Final Four appearance, with Gottlieb becoming the eighth coach on that list after leading her 2012-13 California squad to a 32-4 record that included the program’s first Pac-12 regular season championship as well as the first Elite Eight and Final Four bids in 40 years of California women’s basketball. Doing so in her second season in Berkeley, Gottlieb became just the seventh coach in the country since 1990 to coach her team to the Final Four in her first two seasons at the helm of a program.

The 2012-13 season was a record-breaking season for the Golden Bears that culminated in Gottlieb being named a finalist for the prestigious Naismith National Coach of the Year award in addition to being named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year by the media after leading her team to a 17-1 conference record.

Earning praise for her ability to gameplan and make in-game adjustments, Gottlieb became just the fifth coach to win a Pac-12 title in her first two seasons as a head coach in the conference. She is the only active coach in the conference to lead her team to a road victory at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion, a feat she accomplished with a 67-55 victory on January 13, 2013 that ended the Cardinal’s 81-game conference winning streak and announced California’s ascension into the conference and national championship discussions.

Gottlieb’s Bears reeled off a program-record 15 consecutive wins to end the regular season and earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In a run that surpassed the combined NCAA Tournament win total of all previous California head coaches, Gottlieb led her team to victories over Fresno State, South Florida, LSU and Georgia to reach the 2013 Final Four. She holds a career NCAA Tournament record of 6-4 in four appearances – once as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara and three at California.

Leading teams to success in the postseason isn’t her only specialty though. In her three seasons at California, Gottlieb has amassed a 79-24 record – more California-bests by setting new marks for most wins in a two-year and three-year period in Berkeley. Already the first coach to win 20 games in her first season with the Bears, her program-record 32 wins in the 2012-13 season helped solidify her position as No. 3 all-time in the Pac-12 for winning percentage in all games as a Pac-12 coach (79-24, .767) and winning percentage in conference games as a Pac-12 coach (43-11, .796). The 32 wins also marked just the 12th time in conference history that a team surpassed the 30-win barrier, going down as the seventh-best single-season win total in Pac-12 history.

Utilizing an up-tempo, attractive brand of basketball, Gottlieb’s approach has helped revitalize West Coast women’s basketball with guard Layshia Clarendon thriving under Gottlieb’s system en route to being selected No. 9 by the Indiana Fever in the 2013 WNBA Draft as the first player based on the West Coast to be selected. Clarendon twice earned All-America honors in two years playing under Gottlieb and was selected as the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year. In total at California, Gottlieb has coached players to four All-America seasons in three years with Clarendon earning honors in 2012 and 2013 in addition to Gennifer Brandon earning honors in 2013 and Brittany Boyd earning honors in 2014.

In her first season at the helm in Berkeley in 2011-12, Gottlieb took Cal back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 with her Bears advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Gottlieb also led the Bears to a second place Pac-12 finish, just the third time since joining the Pac-10 in its inaugural season (1985-86) that the Bears finished in second place and it was only the second time that Cal has finished with sole possession of second.

2012-13 Bear faCTs

GAME RECAP: Backed by a double-double from sophomore Courtney Range, the No.15 California women’s basketball team treated fans to a 75-42 exhibition victory over Vanguard at Haas Pavilion. Range, who rounded out her performance with 11 rebounds, led a trio of Bears in double figures as senior Brittany Boyd and freshman Mikayla Cowling logged 12 points and pulled down seven boards apiece. Every Golden Bear who entered the game registered points, including sophomore KC Waters (9), redshirt senior Brittany Shine (8) and sophomore Mercedes Jefflo (7). Freshmen Gabby Green and Penina Davidson and senior Justine Hartman poured in 12 points, collectively.

CONSENSUS TOP 15: California will enter 2014-15 as a consensus top-15 program after earning preseason rankings of No. 14 in the USA Today Sports Coaches’ poll and No. 15 in the Associated Press poll. The Golden Bears also picked up No. 12 and No. 15 rankings in the preview editions of Sporting News and Athlon Sports magazines, respectively.

NEW QUEENS OF THE PAC-12: The media that follow the Pac-12 have decided that there may be a changing of the guard in the Pac-12 after selecting the Golden Bears as the preseason favorite to win the conference title. It is the highest that the Bears have been selected in the preseason poll by the media, ending a string of 15 consecutive seasons that Stanford was the preseason No. 1. The Bears edged out their Bay Area rivals by four points with Cal collecting nine first-place votes, Stanford collecting seven first-place votes, and Oregon State collecting one.

NEED TO KNOW - BOYD & GRAY (CORN FLAKES & MILK): Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray – or “Corn Flakes and Milk” as Gray once described the pairing in a press conference last season – have been profiled to have big seasons by Athlon Sports, Lindy’s and Sporting News magazines. Sporting News picked Gray as a first team All-American and Boyd as a second team All-America, while Lindy’s went even further by selecting both as preseason All-Americans in addition to profiling Boyd as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Athlon Sports also picked Gray as a second team All-American.

FIRST GAME BURST: The Golden Bears are 25-16 all-time in season openers, including 2-1 under coach Lindsay Gottlieb after her Golden Bears defeated Long Beach State 70-51 last season.

BOYD RISES IN PAC-12 ALL-TIME RECORD BOOKS: California’s Brittany Boyd is steadily rising up the Pac-12 all-time record book and approaching the top 10 list for career steals. With 270 career thefts, Boyd is 4 shy of matching Nicole Anderson (UCLA, 1990-93) for 10th all-time and 18 shy of Michelle Greco (UCLA, 1999-03) for fifth all-time. Boyd is also closing in on the top 10 list for career assists with 506 currently in her career - 71 shy of matching Nicole Powell and Leilani Estavan for 10th all-time.

The Tigers went 18-13 last season and advanced to the postseason for the third consecutive year - a program first. en route to All-WCC honors. Redshirt senior Gena Johnson returns to action after sitting out the 2013-14 season. Johnson averaged 12.0 points, 3.6 assists and 2.7 assists per game in her last season in action.

California-PaCifiC series hisToryCalifornia holds a 22-2 series advantage against the Tigers after claiming a 68-66 overtime win in Berkeley last season, the renewal of a rivalry after 15 years without a game. The last Pacific win was a 64-63 decision in the ‘97-98 season. California has not lost to Pacific in Berkeley, claiming a 15-0 record against the Tigers in home games. On the road, the Bears are 7-2 all-time against the Tigers.

On the same site where the beloved Harmon Gym stood for more than 60 years, the Water A. Haas Jr. Pavilion has risen as a modern sports facility that retains the old building’s famous spirit.

The $57.5 million arena opened in the fall of 1999 and though the structure is 37 feet taller, 28 feet wider and a capacity of 11,877 that doubles that of Harmon Gym, it has continued to keep fans close to the action.

The building is named for Haas ’37, who, with his wife, Evelyn, provided the lead gift for the renovation. A member of the tennis team while an undergraduate at Cal, Haas enjoyed a long career with Levi Strauss & Co., as both chief executive officer and chairman of the board during his tenure with the company. In 1953, Haas and his wife created the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, which has provided more than $260 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, primarily in the Bay Area.

The playing surface in the arena is named for Pete Newell, the Hall of Fame coach who directed Cal to the 1959 NCAA championship and later coached the U.S. team to a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics.

Cal is in its 15th season competing at Haas Pavilion. Since Haas opened, the Bears have posted a 148-74 (.667) mark at home.

“I first met Mercedes prior to her 9th grade year when she attend-ed my camp at UCSB,” head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “I imme-diately saw the potential of a high-level collegiate player, and the determination of a young woman destined to ‘make it.’ Mercedes is a complete guard: she can shoot or slash, has terrific court vi-sion, and loves the defensive end of the floor. She has been men-tored by terrific coaches in high school and with the Cal Sparks, and she will thrive in the collegiate environment.”

Range joins the Cal basketball family highly heralded as the No. 5 winger in the country that is projected as the No. 36 overall recruit in the country by BlueStar and No. 38 by HoopGurlz. The 6’3 forward averaged 14.9 points per game for St. Mary’s High School last season in leading her team to the CIF Division II title game. Range was named to the California All-State team and the Stockton Record All-Area team while finishing her prep career at Manteca High.

“Courtney is one of the most versatile players in the country, and will bring a new dimension to our team,” head coach Lindsay Got-tlieb said. “Her height makes her tough to stop inside, yet her pe-rimeter ballhandling and shooting skills make her a legitimate wing player. She brings winning ways from her high school and Cal Stars club experiences, and we are so excited to have her in the Golden Bear family.”

As a FRESHMAN in 2013-14, one of four players to play in all 32 games for the Golden Bears ... averaged 5.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game ... hit double-figures rebounding and led the Bears in rebounding in five of her first seven career games ... scored nine points with 14 rebounds and one blocked shot in her collegiate debut against Long Beach State (November 8) ... matched her career-high of 14 rebounds at George Washington (November 15) ... scored 10 points for the first time against Wake Forest at the Nugget Classic (November 29) ... also blocked a ca-reer-high three shots against the Demon Deacons ... had her first career double-double against Idaho in the Nugget Classic cham-pionship game with 11 points and 11 rebounds (November 30) ... opened Pac-12 play with 10 points against Oregon State and a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds) against Oregon ... hit her first career 3-pointer against Arizona (February 14) after missing her first 18 career attempts ... scored 11 points behind a 3-of-6 effort from 3pt range at UCLA (February 21).

“I will not forget the first moment that I saw KC on a basketball court,” head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “She was an 8th grader who was already dominant, and my first thought was: that’s a Cal post player! She has a combination of size, skill and athleticism that will make her special at the next level. It has been fun to see her expand her skill set at Bishop O’Dowd and with Team Taurasi, and we look forward to finally having her in a blue and gold jersey.”
