Our Mission
California Walks is the statewide voice
for pedestrian safety & healthy,
walkable communities for people of all
ages & abilities.
ATP Funding for Walking
o No real dedicated funding for
walking in CA o State Pedestrian Safety Account
(PSA) was one-time program $10M in
2001
o Supported ATP consolidation in
order to increase available funding
opportunities for walking projects
Statewide Pedestrian Needs
Annual Per
Capita Need (2013 $)
Annual
State Need (2013 $)
System
Expansion $19.35 $720,950,395
System
Maintenance $32.77 $1,220,812,138
ADA
Compliance $1.05 $39,116,654
Total $53.17 $1,980,879,187
Consolidation of Programs
o Initial proposal lacked safeguards for
SRTS, as well as for non-
infrastructure projects
o Concern with lack of supplemental
funding to ensure level funding
would hamper transformative
potential of ATP
Project Eligibilities
o Due to initial proposal recycling
existing program language, walking
barely mentioned
o Pushed for clarification that non-
SRTS non-infrastructure projects
would be eligible
Project Eligibilities
o Cal Walks priority to ensure ATP was
balanced program in terms of modes
served – Succeeded in securing statutory
language:
“Provide a broad spectrum of projects to
benefit many types of active
transportation users.”
