Hi to All Members of the
Mother Lode Model T Club,
I would like to start out by
saying good bye to another one
of our Dear Friends, Vernell
Bunnell, also known as Miss
Brownie. I am sure God has a
special place in heaven for her, such a sweet lady
that will be missed by all that knew her.
Well, as August is coming to a close, kids are
starting back to school and the weather feels like it
is starting to change, at least nights are cooler. We
just had the Annual August Beat the Heat Breakfast
tour, hosted by Rich and Bertie Baughman. Nine
cars showed up with a short tour in the morning and
a trip over to Mel's Diner in
Rocklin. We had two special
guests join our group at Mel's
for breakfast, Grace Aldridge
and her daughter. Grace was as
beautiful as ever and we all
enjoyed visiting with her.
Again, I would like to thank
Rich and Bertie for hosting.
As we roll into September, we
have the Ice Cream Social on September 29 hosted
by Bill and Debbie Bamber. If you have not signed
up yet make sure to call the Bamber's to rsvp.
We can always use another tour in September, if
someone would be interested in hosting, call Susie
and she can get it put on the schedule. If you would
like to help with the 2019 Charter Picnic, be sure to
call Junette Avey, I am sure she would love to hear
from you.
It looks like the next Fall Hill Climb will be in
Auburn on Saturday October 6th at the Auburn
Airport. Let's get out there and support Bobby and
Erik in the Wild Cherry II, sounds like they are
doing pretty well.
There will be a Board Meeting at the Round Table
pizza in the Elm Center in Auburn. There will be
an email sent out as a reminder.
I would like to thank everyone for all your support
and help in keeping the Mother Lode Model T Club
active and I look forward to seeing you all at the
September monthly meeting.
Your President,
Gary Krezman T Diggins' Page 1

Ryan Ramble Tour August 9-12
The 11th annual Ryan Ramble was another great one. This is an annual event planned by Matt Ryan, from the Norcal
region of the HCCA, with help from his brother Clay, and other family members. This year's tour was centered at the
Feather Falls Casino near Oroville, California.
Thursday was arrival and check in day. After cars were unloaded and we were settled, we checked in, received our tour bags, relaxed around the pool or hospitality in the hotel, and renewed acquaintances from previous tours. Attending from
the Mother Lode Model T Club were, Bill & Debbie Bamber, Mark O'Connor (modern car), John & Janice Saylor, and
Milt Webb with daughter Deanna (Modern Car) and Wendel & Michelle Waltz and Mike & Debbie Kostiv from the Sac Valley Club. Approximately 20 cars toured with us each day as well as a couple moderns. There were people from
Southern California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho on the tour.
Friday morning Matt conducted the usual drivers meeting. We would be touring through Paradise to Stirling City, 99 miles round trip. He reminded us there was an optional dirt-gravel road, marked in red on our instructions and
recommended that only speedsters take this route. (There was only one speedster). Mark was my navigator (his car had
engine trouble on the way up and Janice decided to stay in for the day) we were sort of just following the cars ahead of us
when several turned onto a road that was not paved. A quick check of the tour instructions indicated this was the optional dirt road (red text!). Well it didn't seem that bad so we continued and some even followed us. There were a few ruts and
bumps but we made it to the morning coffee & snack break at Table Mountain Ecological Reserve. I now had a very
dusty dirty car! After the break we toured on through Paradise to the Museum in Stirling City. There is lots of history of the area here. Also I remembered this is Jack Duncan's home town. We stopped here by his house on the Lassen Tour in
2004. Found out the Diamond Match Company had their mill here. After the museum and grounds we toured a short
distance to the Clotilde Merlo Park for a delicious catered lunch of hoagie sandwiches and sides. This was a beautiful park
with a small lake. This is the kind of park where after a big lunch, one could snooze away the day or go meandering through the trails and taking in all the beauty.
After lunch we left the park heading back towards Paradise looking for the Honey
Run Road and a "muffler car" landmark. Well Mark and I weren't finding the muffler car and the Honey Run street sign. After asking directions twice and
turning around, we finally found the very small street sign and headed down the
steep winding Honey Run Rd. Before long we came to a section where the locals had made multi color chalk drawings on the road. Some were very elaborate. Our
tour bags had 2 pieces of large white chalk with which we were to make our mark.
Neither of us had our chalk with us. We made it down the hill to the rest stop at the
Honey Run Covered Bridge. Built in 1886, crossing over Butte Creek, the Honey Run Bridge is the only surviving example of a three span timber Pratt-Type
covered bridge in the United States. It was in daily use until a truck crashed into it
in 1965 making the bridge unsafe for auto traffic. A new steel span was built upstream. The wooden bridge has been restored but it's only open to foot traffic. After we rest up we headed on to the
Casino via Chico. We were just a few miles from the Casino when I ran out of gas. Luckily the trouble truck was right
there within minutes with gas. T Diggins' Page 5
Ryan Ramble (cont't)
Back at the motel we filled up for the next day's run then relaxed in the hospitality area. Some went swimming while others headed for the Casino. Several of us had dinner at the Casino Buffet.
Saturday started off with Matt's Drivers meeting. It would be 101 miles today. There is also an optional gravel road
today but smoother than yesterday. Mark and I agreed that we would not do the dirt road today! Matt reiterated that there was no gas on the route once we left town and to gas up even if it only was a gallon or two at a station on route as we
leave town. Many of us did.
Our morning rest stop was in Forbes Town at the Yuba Feather Historical Association Museum. This is another neat
museum town. Many old buildings including a church, school house, Sheriff's office with a jail, and a barber shop that doubled as a dentist office. We left the museum heading towards Dobbins and Lake Francis. Here we had a sit down
lunch with chicken and all the fixins'. This was another beautiful spot with a lake and RV campground. Moving on, after
lunch, we toured on to Bullard's Bar Lake. We stopped for a bit near the Dark Day campground where some hiked down to the water's edge to dip their toes in the water. Then it was on to the Emerald Cove Marina. The floating Marina had a
store where some bought ice cream and viewed some giant friendly fish looking for a handout! Then there were those of
us that were low on gas, I only had 2 gallons left. The trouble truck had gas but we would probably deplete his supply.
So, we made several trips down the ramp to the marina with a 2 gallon can. I did not want to run out of gas again. I still had not figured out why I was using so much gas. Jim Ryan barrowed a 5 gallon can and a wheeled cart from the Marina
to top off the Hudson.
Leaving the Marina we had a leisurely drive back to the Casino. Again we serviced our cars as needed, relaxed in the hospitality area,
swapped a few stories of the days' adventure and some again went for a
dip in the pool. Mark had told us about the street fair event in the Casino main parking lot, so, several of us wandered over to see what
was going on and buy hot dogs for dinner. Janice went to the Casino
and had some more fun on the slots losing the rest of the "free money"
on our two cards. Sunday was the last day of the tour which would end after lunch. We
toured to the Oroville Dam Marina expecting to get a group picture
with the lake in the back ground. Matt had previously arranged with a ranger to allow us in for enough time to take the picture without paying
the day use fee. Well, when we got there, the "rangerette" on duty
knew nothing of the prior arrangement and was not going to allow us in unless we all paid the day use fee. Matt made a quick decision to
move on and find a different spot for the picture. He found a wide spot
with room to park us all. About six cars were running behind and
somehow were allowed into the marina and of course we weren't there. Then apparently one was experiencing some issues which further
delayed them catching up. So he took the picture without them and we
moved on. We toured back into Oroville to the State Theater. The theater is undergoing renovation while staying open for public and
private events. Local resident and antique car owner, David Dewey
gave us the run down on what was being done. David is the chief
technician restoring the Wurlitzer pipe organ. The organ is the one that used to be at the California Auto Museum. It is now operational and
we got to hear it play a few oldies. Several of the group was able to
play a few notes. David gave us a tour back stage, the pipe room and down stairs under the stage. We moved
on across the street to a Chinese restaurant for lunch.
After lunch some of us got to tour David's repair shop where he is restoring more parts for the organ. This
was the end to a fun three days touring, meeting new
friends, seeing some beautiful country side. And a big
thank you to Matt and his family for putting together this tour every year. For next year's tour Matt is
looking at Lake Tahoe. T Diggins' Page 5
