Our Students Support Local Older Residents
Freebrough Academy staff and students recently hosted a
special kind of event for senior citizens from the local community.
Around 35 people from Brotton Over Sixties Luncheon Club
enjoyed afternoon tea in the superb facilities of the Freebrough
Restaurant – and they even had a game of bingo!
Since the Academy opened a year ago it has been at the heart of
East Cleveland. Principal Linda Halbert explains, ‘We are
creating a vibrant environment at Freebrough, not only for our
students who are inspired and motivated to achieve excellence,
but also for the local community who can benefit from our superb
facilities and ‘can do’ culture.’
The Brotton Over Sixties Luncheon Club organises popular and
fun activities and outings for older people in rural Brotton.
Margaret Whitehead, organiser of the club says, ‘The event
hosted by Freebrough was a superb social occasion. It’s exactly
what makes our members feel part of their local community, and
connect with people around them.’
Chef at Freebrough Restaurant, Stewart McGreskin says, ‘Local
residents enjoyed well-deserved pampering and attention, and
our motivated students put their skills into real-life practice,
gaining the satisfaction of helping others along the way. Win-win
for us all!’
The event marks an on-going programme by Freebrough
Restaurant to open its doors to the wider community. It currently
provides a before-school breakfast club, break time snacks and a
wide range of healthy, delicious lunches for students. Now it
intends to expand this further, so local people can benefit too.
This has been a very positive and
productive half term in Freebrough
Academy. The vast majority of
students have come back to school
very focused on their learning and
positive about school. We are
delighted with the progress that has been made by Year 7 in
their first half term. Students have worked really hard to become
full and active members of the academy community. The
meeting with Year 7 parents at the end of September confirmed
how positive the transition process had been and how positive
the impact has been on students. 98% of parents said their
child had settled well at Freebrough. This is fantastic
feedback and means that those young people can really begin to
learn and make progress from day one.
Year 11 are really focusing on their preparation for their
examinations and working hard for their GCSE maths exam in
November. They are making good progress towards meeting
their targets and making the most of the many extra study
support opportunities available to them after school. Keep up
the good work. We are very proud of you.
I would like to remind parents and carers that we run a Youth
Club in partnership with the Youth Service, Police, and the Fire
Service. Friday@Freebrough now has 57 members and runs
from 6.30-9.00 pm every Friday evening.
We have had a fantastic end to this half term with two special
events. On Monday 17 October 2011 Freebrough Academy
held its first Awards Evening. Professor Graham Henderson,
Vice Chancellor at Teesside University, presented awards for
achievement and progress as well as special awards for
attendance and contribution to the academy. The event was
attended by The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Councillor Mrs
Olwyn Peters, sponsors, governors and community partners as
well as nearly 200 very proud parents and carers. Well done to
all of those nominees and winners.
On Tuesday 18 October 2012 the Science and Engineering
group presented their designs for the "Freebrough Gardens".
Their designs are very creative and original and their
presentations showed evidence of their scientific knowledge and
understanding. We are looking to create some of the designs in
our grounds. Watch this space for developments.
I would like to remind you that school returns at 8.35 am on
Monday 31 October 2011.
We look forward to working with you next half term
Cross Country
Freebrough attended the English Schools Cross Country first
round at Laurence Jackson school on Thursday 6th October 2011.
This is the first year we have entered more than one team which is
something to be proud of in itself. All teams (Junior Boys, Junior
Girls and Intermediate Boys) performed well and pushed
themselves through the hard course, which proved difficult for
even the best runners.
Exceptional performances from Tom Pajak, Kenan Sanderson
Lettin and Adam McMillan who came in 3rd, 5th and 7th place out
of 60. Unfortunately as a team they just missed out on progressing
to the next round by one place as they came in 4th (out of nine
schools overall).
Other performances that stood out include Tyren Lettin (16th
place) and Courtney Taylor (year 7) who came in 6th and was
also running against year 8 students.
All runners should be pleased with their efforts, hopefully next
year we will get through to the next round.

Premier League Enterprise Challenge
On Friday 14 October 2011 a group of Freebrough students took part in the Premier League Enterprise Challenge. They did a great job of researching and putting together a presentation which they then delivered to teams from other schools. Unfortunately we did not win the challenge but the girls certainly gave 100% for the Academy. The Teams were: Year 10 team Ashleigh Bailes Nicole Gilpin Faye Parry Megan Scarff Year 9 team Karsha Brown Sadie Howard Nicoe Ovington Nicole Starsmore Leah Jay Watson
A Dedication Through Drama Miss Beasley’s GCSE drama group are currently working on some very sensitive drama work about the 9/11 attacks in dedication to all those who suffered. They are going to display some of this work in the last week of October in the academy.
We’re Getting Our Grown-Ups Growing Freebrough Academy’s Science and Engineering Club held a showcase event as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Get your Grown-ups Growing Campaign’ on Tuesday 18th October 2011. The Science and Engineering Club involves students at both Key stage 3 and Key stage 4 and aims to raise students aspirations though applied STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Technology) activities. Over the last term, students have been looking at developing an area of the Academy grounds into a “Freebrough Garden”. Students were set a brief to design a garden that is sustainable, is an outdoor learning environment and provides the school and its community a rich cross curricular resource. As part of their research they have visited RHS gardens at Harlow Carr and been supported by the Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle. At the event students shared their ideas, experiences and designs in an informal setting. Well done to the students involved for being fantastic ambassadors for Freebrough. They s p o k e w i t h c on f i denc e and enthusiasm about their designs to representatives from the local council, our board of governors and our primary feeder schools . This photograph shows the vision that the students hope will become a reality.
Can you spare a couple of hours each half term?
Friends of Freebrough is a small group of staff and members of the local community who are
dedicated to raising funds for the benefit of our students.
The group urgently needs new members to help with the organisation of fundraising events.
All money raised by the group is used to supplement extra curricular activities and to
provide subject areas with additional resources. Students can also bid for investment in their ideas
during a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style panel.
All parents and members of the community are welcome to join the group for their next meeting on Thursday 3 November at 4.00 pm in the academy.
