Lehrer’s Guide to Journalism
Jim Lehrer was an old-school journalist known for presenting the news fairly, fully and without opinion. He believed strongly in the importance of the profession of journalism and the ethics behind that profession. Lehrer, the long-time anchor and executive editor of PBS NewsHour, died in January at the age of 85.
A column in the Dallas Morning News, where Lehrer started his career, memorialized his contribution to journalism. The piece emphasized how Lehrer’s approach was in “stark contrast to the nonstop nonsense of bias, noise, and garbage” that we often see on cable TV today. The column ended with Lehrer’s own words. It’s worth repeating here as something all journalists should strive to emulate:
“People often ask me if there are guidelines in our practice. Well, yes, there are, and here they are. Do nothing I cannot defend. Cover, write and present every story with the care I would want if the story were about me. Assume there is at least one other side or version to every story. Assume the viewer is as smart and caring and as good a person as I am. Assume the same about all people on whom I report. Assume personal lives are a private matter until a legitimate turn in the story absolutely mandates otherwise. Carefully separate opinion and analysis from straight news stories and clearly label everything. Do not use anonymous sources except on rare and monumental occasions. And, finally, I am not in the entertainment business!”
Thank you for the guidance, Jim. We will miss you.

Match Day 2020 Supports WOSU’s New HQ
Since launching the New Place. New Space. New Experience. Capital Campaign, hundreds of people have come together to support WOSU Public Media’s new headquarters at 14th Avenue and Pearl Alley.
In February, WOSU Public Media’s annual Match Day featured the new headquarters. 89.7 NPR News, Classical 101, and WOSU TV all went on air to ask our listeners and viewers to support this future space of WOSU. Thank you to everyone who gave on Match Day to help put WOSU one step closer to its new home. Each donor’s story and reason for giving is different. Below, we highlighted some of the reasons your neighbors are excited about this new space:
BILL MILLER
“My wife Jane and I have been watching and listening to the WOSU stations for over 50 years—the stations are a big part of our lives. We love the wealth of interesting news, history, and educational programs and I especially like the classical music programming. We want to ensure that the stations we love have the facilities to envelope and meet the needs of the community for the next 50 years.”
DAVID AND JOANNE FRANTZ
“We are pleased that the new WOSU building will allow more internships for local college students which will allow for valuable training for them as well as enhancing the depth of reporting for WOSU. We want our trusted news source to thrive in Columbus and that’s why we’ve already donated to WOSU’s new building.”
TRACEY FOX
“I have lived in Central Ohio my whole life, and from the wonderful children’s programming I watched on WOSU TV when I was a child to my current love for classical music radio and NPR during my work commute, I have always loved the great content WOSU has to offer. WOSU is a one-of-a-kind media organization that I’m proud to support.”

Now that voters in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina have had their say, the real race for the Democratic nomination will begin. Ohio and 89.7 NPR News will be right in the thick of it.
The defining moment could come with Super Tuesday on March 3, when 14 states hold their primaries. (American Samoa and Democrats living abroad also vote on that day.) That will be the day when the Democrats looking to challenge President Trump will face their first real national test. Super Tuesday features primaries from Alabama to Vermont, Maine to California, Texas to Minnesota. Can a far-left progressive candidate win over middle-America? Will Michael Bloomberg’s strategy of ignoring the early states pay off? We’ll know the answer in the early hours of Wednesday, March 4.
Six more states hold primaries on March 10, including the pivotal swing state of Michigan which Democrats must win to take back the White House.
Then comes Ohio’s turn. The Buckeye State joins three other states who hold a St. Patrick’s Day primary on March 17. When Ohio’s votes are counted, 29 states will have held primaries or caucuses. It could be the final coronation of the Democratic nominee or it could be the mid-way point of a contentious nomination process that extends into the summer.
89.7 NPR News will be there every day, bringing you stories from the primary states, analysis from top experts and live coverage on each election night.
