CHARLES STROUSE (Music) Best known for his Tony Award-winning score for Annie, there may be no other living composer whose work is as integrated into the popular culture. A three-time Tony Award-winner, Charles Strouse’s music has touched the life of almost every American in the last half century. From the classic “Once Upon a Time” to the rocking score of Bye, Bye, Birdie (Tony Award), his celebrated songs are an essential part of the American songbook. A graduate of The Eastman School of Music, Charles studied composition with Aaron Copland and Nadia Boulanger. Like most composers, he found himself playing in bar rooms and strip-clubs (a particular boon for one who was to write the music for the film The Night They Raided Minsky’s). Having previously composed chamber music, two piano concertos, a string quartet, and two operas, Charles met Lee Adams, with whom he would collaborate on more than ten musicals, including It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman (Tony nomination), Golden Boy (Tony nomination), and the Tony-winning Applause. Charles has received the Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, and Leonard Bernstein Awards for musical achievement. In addition to Adams, Charles has collaborated with an array of celebrated songwriters such as Alan Jay Lerner (Dance A Little Closer ), Sammy Cahn (Bojangles), Stephen Schwartz (Rags), Hal David (Lady For A Day ), Richard Maltby, Jr. (Nick and Nora), and more. He is married to director/choreographer Barbara Siman and is the father of Benjamin, Nicholas, Victoria, and William.

STEPHEN SCHWARTZ (Lyrics) wrote the music and lyrics for the current Broadway hit Wicked, and has also contributed music and lyrics to Godspell, Pippin, The Magic Show, The Baker’s Wife, Working (which he also adapted and directed), and Children of Eden. He has also worked in film, collaborating with Alan Menken on the songs for Disney’s Enchanted as well as the animated features Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and writing the songs for the DreamWorks animated feature The Prince of Egypt. Both Hunchback and currently Prince of Egypt have been adapted for the stage. Mr. Schwartz has been inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has been given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Awards include three Academy Awards, four Grammy Awards, and the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award. www.stephenschwartz.com

Thompson created the new script adaptation for the revival of Chicago, the longest-running American musical in history. Other Broadway projects include Steel Pier (Tony nomination, Best Book) and Thou Shalt Not. Current Broadway projects: Prince of Broadway, directed by Harold Prince and Susan Stroman. Off-Broadway: And the World Goes ‘Round (Drama Desk and Outer Circle Critics Awards) and the revival of Flora, the Red Menace (Drama Desk nomination) Upcoming Off-Broadway projects include The Beast in the Jungle at the Vineyard Theater. ABOUT THE AUTHORS

GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2017 SEASON 29

It’s been said that it is never a good idea to meet your heroes. I suppose that’s true, especially in the theater. But not when it comes to the masterful Joseph Stein. Joe was one of the most gracious librettists who ever worked in the theater. He was a true gentleman, who knew how to retain an air of humor and civility, even in the rough and tumble world of writing musicals. He was also generous and encouraging to young writers, inspiring them to find their way in an art form without rules. I had the opportunity to meet Joe in the early days of my career. He had come to see a show I had written, and to my surprise, he followed up on our post-show conversation with a hand-written note—a note I still have. The years passed, and every time I would see Joe, he treated me like a peer, sharing stories about his latest projects. When Joe died in 2010, the theater lost “one of the good guys” who knew what it took to balance life—and art.

When Michael Gennaro asked me to rework the libretto to Rags, I jumped at the opportunity. I thought of it, in an odd way, as a chance to finally collaborate with Joe. By spending time with the countless drafts he had written and the characters he had created, I could better understand how he approached his craft.

Rags began as a screenplay Stein had written in the early 1980s. It was a cinematic story about the Jewish immigrant experience in the early part of the last century. Joe wanted to explore what might have happened to the families who had come to America from Anatevka—not necessarily Tevye and his daughters, but the other families whose lives had been uprooted by the Russian pogroms. Set on the Lower East Side in 1910, the story followed Avram and his three children, trying to find their way in America.

After Stein finished his first draft of the screenplay, he determined it wasn’t a film after all, but the book of a new musical. And so the journey of Rags began. Some of the characters receded into the background. Others, like the character of Rebecca, were added. I never saw the original production of Rags, although I know it was a stormy process that ran aground on the shoals of Broadway.

The fact that Rags failed in its original outing in no way diminishes Joe’s original desire to write a story about the immigrant experience in America. In fact, in the years since Joe wrote his initial treatment, the story has become even more relevant, more important and, in many ways, more needed. There isn’t a day that passes we don’t read another headline about an immigrant family coming to America, hoping to find a better life. Or even more sadly, an immigrant family who is turned away because of growing xenophobia.

For this reason, I was determined to rediscover the original idea that sparked Joe’s imagination when he first sat down to write his initial treatment. What was the flash of inspiration? As I read several of Joe’s early drafts of the script, different themes kept emerging. One of the most powerful themes was the struggle of cultural assimilation. As a stranger in a new country, what do you keep? What do you leave behind? And how far are you willing to go to hold onto what is important to you. This conflict is at the core of Fiddler on the Roof. But it’s an idea that Joe explored in nearly all of his work—starting with one of his first musicals, Plain and Fancy, where he wrote about the struggles of the Amish in 20th Century Pennsylvania.

It’s a theme that is also at the core of Rags. Every character must decide what’s to be gained—and what’s to be lost—in the New World. In this new version, I have followed Joe’s example from other projects he has written and reduced the size of the story, making it much more intimate and personal. Instead of focusing on an entire tapestry of characters on the Lower East Side, I have chosen to write about a single “melting pot” family living in a small three-room tenement. In other words, big characters in small spaces—think Tevye in the small town of Anatevka. And I have given them the universal challenge: what would I do for my child in a new world? How would I guide them in a world full of unknowns? What can I bring to America that is uniquely my own?

When I was doing some initial research for the show, I read this passage in one of the guidebooks immigrants were given at Ellis Island: “Holdfast, this is most necessary in America, forget your customs and your ideals. Select a goal and pursue it with all your might…You will experience a bad time, but sooner or later you will achieve your goal. If you are neglectful, beware the wheel of fortune turns fast. You will lose your grip and be lost. A bit of advice for you: Do not take a moment’s rest. Run, do, work and keep your own good in mind. A final virtue is needed in America – called cheek. Do not say, ‘I cannot, I do not know.’” For me, this is so much of what the immigrant experience was about at the turn of the last century. It defined the lives they lead, the dreams they pursued, and the contributions they made to America.

As this new production of Rags is about to make its debut, I hope we have found the story Joe set out to write when he put that first piece of paper in his typewriter. It’s been an honor to work on this script and to rediscover Joe’s initial inspiration. After all, as Joe was known to say, “In the beginning, there’s always the story.”

30 GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2017 SEASON

Where We’ve BeenGoodspeed’s beginnings date back to 1963 when we opened our doors as a professional musical theatre in an historic building on the banks of the Connecticut River in East Haddam. Under the direction of Michael Price from 1968 to 2014, Goodspeed transformed from a struggling entity into a non-profit arts organization with a mission. At first, Goodspeed’s commitment was to discover rarely produced musicals from the repertoire, reworking them and bringing them to life. We were also intent on adding to the repertoire by discovering and nurturing promising new musicals presented at both The Goodspeed and The Terris Theatre in neighboring Chester.

In our history, we have produced over 250 musicals, including over 70 world premieres, and exported 21 productions to Broadway. Goodspeed stands as the first regional theatre in America to earn two special Tony Awards, one in 1980 for outstanding contributions to the American musical and a second in 1995 for distinguished achievement for a regional theatre.

Who We Are TodayGoodspeed Musicals mounts both new and newly revived musicals each year on our main stage at The Goodspeed in East Haddam and on our second stage, The Terris Theatre, in Chester–a total of more than 400 performances during the April to December season, attracting 130,000 patrons to the Connecticut River Valley. We stand at the forefront of producing and preserving the American musical, simultaneously reinventing the classics and inventing new ones. We attract well-known icons of the theatre world and foster emerging talent among composers, lyricists, and librettists. Each year, thousands of actors, directors, choreographers, and technicians aspire to come to Goodspeed to practice their craft. Among millions who know and love this art form–and those who appreciate its history and enduring appeal–Goodspeed is widely recognized as “The Home of the American Musical.”

Throughout the year, and intensively during the winter months, Goodspeed addresses issues unique to the field by offering innovative and highly-sought after programs through our Max Showalter Center for Education in Musical Theatre, including the celebrated Musical Theatre Institute providing programs for aspiring musical theatre professionals. The Arts Education Collaboration provides art-education programs for underserved Connecticut youth. The Festival of New Musicals features students from The Hartt School and the Boston Conservatory performing staged readings of three brand-new musicals, industry-related seminars, a symposium, and cabaret performances. Each winter, Goodspeed also hosts the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony that invites musical theatre writing teams to retreat from daily life for a four-week residency and concentrate solely on writing new musicals. In addition, Goodspeed serves as a resource for the preservation of the art form through our Scherer Library of Musical Theatre, the second most extensive musical theatre research library in the United States.

The Future We EnvisionThe Goodspeed campus will continue to serve as a thriving artist colony where the creative process informs the work on our stages and expanding educational programs. We aspire to serve as a safe haven where a singular commitment to discovery and innovation will enrich the field with the next generation of musical theatre artists.

IMPROVING LIFE FOR ALL MIGRATORY ANIMALS.

THE BIKE PATH. YOUR OFFICE. THE BACKYARD. The environment isn’t just

some far off place. It’s the asphalt beneath your bike, the coffee that

fuels your commute, and the park where you walk your dog. And it’s why

the Natural Resources Defense Council is working to protect the most

important places on Earth. For easy ways to help protect your environment,

go to NRDC’s how-to website, SimpleSteps.org.

Because the environment is everywhere.
