Dear Friend,

I ask you to join me in supporting this year’s Annual Diocesan Appeal, Called to One Table, Together in Christ. As the Lord Jesus gathered The Twelve, we are also called to hear His Word and to know the Lord in a personal way. United with Him and with one another, we proclaim our Faith and so build up the Church, even as we offer our lives in support of God’s working in our midst – here in the Diocese of San Jose and beyond our borders, “to the ends of the Earth.” Ours is the mission to share from what we have received, remembering that every gift, every grace that is ours, is indeed on its way to another. We are but stewards, guardians and sharers of the goodness and mercy that God bestows upon us.

Our ministries address the needs of the less fortunate, as encouraged by the Lord in the gospel of Saint Matthew, chapter 25 (the hungry, homeless, ill and imprisoned). Your ADA dollars also assist our seminarians and permanent deacon candidates in their formation for ministry, enable the work of our Institute for Leadership in Ministry (ILM), Catechetical Office, Hispanic Apostolate and the offices of Liturgy, Youth and Young Adults, and Social Ministries.

In closing, please know that you, your family and your loved ones remain in my daily prayer.

With every best wish and kind regards, I remain,

Sincerely yours,

Patrick J. McGrathBishop of San Jose

ADA in Action: Ignacio ColomaMaster Catechist at Most Holy Trinity

Ignacio Coloma admits he grew up poor. “I think that being poor increased my awareness for social justice”, says Ignacio. “My father was involved in social justice and my mother was a very prayerful person. I guess I take after both of them.”

Ignacio came to the United States at the age of 20 and knew that a good education was essential to a better life. Reading a list of Ignacio’s volunteer record is impressive. Ignacio the student has become Ignacio the teacher. He is a graduate of the Institute for Leadership in Ministry (ILM); a Master Catechist; works throughout Deanery Six teaching social ministries; religious education (grades 2-8); Confirmation and RCIA classes.

Ignacio says he receives more than he gives, that being able to serve is a humbling experience. Ignacio states, “ I am just a companion on the journey and it is something I enjoy doing and hope to do for a long time”.

Your ADA donation makes the ILM and other religious education classes possible for the benefit of people like Ignacio Coloma.

ADA in Action: Michael ScottSeminarian at St. Patrick’s Seminary

Michael Scott attended Catholic school from K-12 grade in Orange County, California. Around the age of 10, serving as an alter server, a priest suggested to Michael that he consider a future in the priesthood. Michael admits that he blocked the idea for 20 years

Michael has a degree from Purdue University, studied at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain and has a Master’s Degree in Engineering from USC. He was employed by Boeing and was moving toward his career goal of working for British Petroleum in London. It wasn’t until he went on a three day retreat that he opened himself up to the idea of priesthood and, as Michael stated, “to allow God’s will in my life.”

Michael admits, “I still don’t know what God wants from me but I am open to learn. I hope to help others walk toward Christ.”

Your ADA donation allows Michael and other seminarians to concentrate on their studies in spiritual and academic disciplines as they are called to religious leadership in our Diocese of San Jose.

ADA in Action: Anabella EstradaPastoral Associate at Our Lady of Refuge

Anabella Estrada began her studies at the Institute for Leadership in Ministry to better herself personally and spiritually. As Anabella stated, “ILM helped me to explain the church to others more clearly, I saw things differently after becoming an ILM graduate. I was more prepared to help others grow spiritually but also as human beings.”

ILM has graduated more than 600 students giving them the tools to be faith-filled members of the Church. Anabella hopes to someday, “Lord willing”, be able to continue her education at Santa Clara University; as Anabella puts it: “God needs professionals working for him.”

Your ADA donation has helped hundreds of students like Anabella learn more about their faith and work in service to assist their parish and community.

Queridos amigos,

2014 Annual Diocesan AppealDiocese of San Jose1150 North First St. Suite 100San Jose, California 95112Phone: 408-983-0100www.dsj.org/ada

The Diocese of San Jose has its roots in the California Mission established more than two centuries ago. In 1777 the Franciscan Fathers founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís which later became Saint Clare parish.

More than 600,000 Santa Clara County residents identify themselves as Catholic. Our church and the growth it has achieved have always been dependent on those Catholics who have paved the way before us. It is now our turn to add the building blocks of our faith for future Catholics to stand on.

Your involvement and your financial support are needed. Please support the ADA.
