CALOFORT® S precipitated calcium carbonate (pcc) grade, manufactured at Specialty Minerals, Lifford, is a whitestearate coated microcrystalline powder characterised by high surface area, controlled particle shape and highwhiteness.
CALOFORT® S pcc consists of fine calcitic crystals with an average particle size of 0.07µm. Due to its very smallparticle size, it has a tendency to form soft agglomerates. However, application of a 3% stearate coating, duringmanufacture, ensures any agglomerates are easily broken down in use.
In rubber, PVC and other organic based formulations, the stearate coating ensures the CALOFORT® S pcc particlesare easily wetted and disperse fully allowing maximum utilization of its reinforcing properties.
APPLICATIONS:
CALOFORT® S pcc is widely used in rigid and plasticised PVC formulations. In rigid PVC it is used to increase impactstrength, particularly at low temperatures, and give improved surface gloss and whiteness. In plasticised PVC it givesexcellent scuff resistance and improved surface properties.
In printing inks CALOFORT® S pcc is used as an extender and it may also contribute towards rheological properties.
CALOFORT® S pcc is used in rubbers due to its very good reinforcement properties and is particularly useful wherehot tear strength is required.
CALOFORT® S pcc is used in solvent based paints andprimers as an antisettling filler.
Other uses of CALOFORT® S pcc include:
n Reinforcing filler in polyester moulding compounds
n Carrier for additives used in plastic compounds
